Desktop Does Not Start Up
by Richard Ibbotson
Hi
I did a dnf update on my F23 workstation. After rebooting to make sure
that the updates were working properly I find that I can't get to the
login screen. I see the blue Fedora logo for a split second. Then
the command line appears with a message to do Ctrl-D or login as root.
Nouveau drivers for the graphics card. I can login as root and use a
text editor. After the failed X startup I can see the following
error message on the screen
Error getting authority: Error initialization authority: Could not
connect: No such file or directory (g-io-error-quark, 1)
If I have a look at the log in /home/user/.local/share/xorg it says...
Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 1
(Permission
denied.
If I try startx as as a user or as root I can see.. for example... in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log...
dbus core: error connecting to system bus:
org.freedesktop.Dbus.Error.FileNotFound (Failed to connect to socket
/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory)
Can anyone suggest how to fix this ? I can't send in lengthy logs due
to the fact that I can't ssh into the machine or run a second or third
console. Access to one console only.

robots.txt
by JD
SOme websites which provide files for download, refuse wget
They send a file robots.txt instead.
In that file I see:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
Allow: /lang/*
Allow: /$
So, I ask if anyone knows how to use wget to get those files without the use
of FF ?

Firefox 44 strops mousescrolling after update
by Ranjan Maitra
Hello,
I have a pretty standard (I thought) optical mouse which has a wheel in the middle that I use for scrolling also. However, this mouse has stopped scrolling (continuously) in Firefox (only, from what I can tell, since the latest update) without clicking. The scrolling behaviour is fine on midori as well as in dillo. (In Firefox itself, the button works fine with the scroll fixed (and then the page goes up or down on its own depending on whether the cursor is above or below the compass-like crosshairs). Also, this is a laptop and two-finger scrolling on the touchpad works as intended (and as the middle-scroll button of the mouse without clicking is supposed to work.)
It is possible that I changed something inadvertently in my settings without realizing to do so (and it is just an interaction effect with the update) but any suggestions on how I might fix it? I looked around the web but all of them point to older versions of Firefox when the setup was different and (while translatable) many options do not exist in "about:config" for instance.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Looking for "photo" program
by Timothy Murphy
There used to be a Unix program for copying text as it was typed.
As I recall, the original program was called "photo",
but then it changed its name, or another program took its place.
(I think the program in fact copied all input and output.)
Is there such a program today?
(I actually want to save Firefox input and output.)

Block connection in firewall -
by Bob Goodwin
I have been messing with a firewall file
and added the following:
config rule
option src lan
option src_ip 192.168.1.7
option dest wan
option target REJECT
It works to prevent internet access from
that ip. However I can still ping
8.8.8.8 which leaves wondering if that
is adequate isolation. Can that be
improved on?
I have never done anything with iptables
and I am pushing my skill level in this
but it is encouraging to have something
actually work ...
Any suggestions appreciated,
Bob

A dual head problem
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonjour,
I have two monitors and an nvidia graphic card. I uses the nvidia
proprietary driver from rpmfusion and have configured the system to
use the twinview option.
I need to load an icc profile for each screen (they are not exactly
the same) and this seems to be impossible under this configuration....
Am I right?
So I changed my config: separate screens + xinerama
With this config, I can load one icc profile for each screen *but*
when I have to use a Qt window (Emacs, skype, rxvt....) the X server
crashes.....
I don't know what is reponsible: nvidia driver or Qt, but I do need to
use Emacs and some other application using Qt.
Is there a solution to my problem: load an icc profile for each screen?
I am under fedora 21 and uses xfce as window manager.
Thank you.

Workarounds for Intel video driver X11 crashes
by Ted Roche
I'm running a Dell Inspiron with an Intel video driver and up-to-date
F23 64 bit installed, GNOME3 desktop. I'm looking for suggestions to
improve stability, as I'm crashing 3 - 4 times a day and can't afford
to lose work in progress in LibreOffice, consoles and Chromium.
Crashes are almost always occurring when I click on a link or UI
element, instantly dropping me back into the login screen. Running
ABRT, I've posted bugs to Bugzilla (see below).
If anyone has a similar setup and had found more stability by
downgrading a driver, tweaking settings or switching desktops, I'd
welcome any suggestions.
