GPG2 can't read smartcard
by Laverne Schrock
Hi,
I have several Fedora 24 boxes, all of which have
/home from NFS. Some of these boxes were fresh
installs and some are upgrades from 23 (some of
which were fresh installs, and some of which were
probably upgrades from 22, etc).
On the fresh installs, running `gpg2 --card-status`
prints out the card info. On the upgraded boxes,
running the same command gives
gpg: selecting openpgp failed: No such device
gpg: OpenPGP card not available: No such device
On both boxes, `rpm -qa | grep gnupg | sort` gives
gnupg-1.4.21-1.fc24.x86_64
gnupg2-2.1.13-2.fc24.x86_64
gnupg2-smime-2.1.13-2.fc24.x86_64
On both boxes, `rpm -qa | grep pcsc` gives
pcsc-lite-1.8.17-2.fc24.x86_64
pcsc-lite-ccid-1.4.23-1.fc24.x86_64
pcsc-lite-libs-1.8.17-2.fc24.x86_64
On both boxes, `ps ax -o user,stat,command | grep scd` gives
root Ssl /usr/sbin/pcscd --foreground --auto-exit
schr1230 SLl scdaemon --multi-server
On the fresh boxes, the pcscd process sometimes
dies, but it comes right back when I run `gpg2 --card-status`
again. It doesn't seem to die on the old (non-working) boxes.
I've checked dmesg and the device is being detected. It
is a Yubikey Neo. On the upgraded machines, when I log
out after trying this (or even just Ctrl-Alt-F1 to gdm) there
is a popup that says
Authentication is required to access the smartcard.
Administrator
Password: <box for pw here>
Entering the password has no effect.
Any idea on what might be different on these older systems
that prevent this from working?
Thanks,
Laverne Schrock

Off Topic- Architectural Question..
by bruce
Hey List.
This is off topic, but I noticed the list has been quiet!!
Trying to get different thoughts on how to approach an issue.
I've got a situation, where I'm going to have a shared nfs, with a
bunch of files..
I'm going to have multiple client boxes/(vms) with each client,
running apps that access the files on the main nfs.
The idea, is that a clientApp, on a given clientVM will access a file
on the nfs, and then the nfs file is no long used. The goal is to rip
through/process the nfs files as fast as possible, in a simple manner.
clientVM1
clientApp1
clientVM2
clientApp2
clientVM3
clientApp3
.
.
clientVMN
clientAppN
nfsShare
dataFiles...
The process can't have the same data file operated on by multiple clientApps.
I've thought of having a "pid" file on the nfs, where each clientApp
would reset/lock/use the pidFile to then get/use/delete the file as
required, but this seems tb slow.. but doable.
Surprisingly, in looking around, haven't come up with anything that
appears to be really better.
(I've also thought of setting up a "webservice" kind of situation,
where clients would get the "file/data" from a webservice, and the
webservice, would interface with the nfs dir.. but this would be
overkill!)
Any thoughts/comments?
Thanks

recommended way to mount a google drive on fedora 24
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
Is there a recommended way to mount a google drive on Fedora 24?
I found these instructions online:
http://xmodulo.com/mount-google-drive-linux.html
(and they involve installing from some place else)
but I was wondering if there is something more recent and recommended for Fedora?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

qalculate and parenthesis
by François Patte
Bonjour,
I try to find out how to insert a parenthesis in qalculate...: (1+2)*18
And cannot find where are the keys with "(" and ")"...
Does anybody know how to do this *very complicated* notation!
Thank you.

F23 rsnapshot log timestamps funny
by Christopher Ross
Since yesterday's update of rsnapshot to
rsnapshot-1.4.2-1.fc23.noarch
The format of the date/time field in the rsnapshot.log has gone funny,
as per the following examples...
[19/Oct/2016:11:53:42] /usr/bin/rsnapshot daily: completed successfully
[19/Oct/2016:12:04:15] /usr/bin/rsnapshot hourly: completed successfully
[2016-10-19T18:08:11] /usr/bin/rsnapshot hourly: completed successfully
[2016-10-20T00:07:09] /usr/bin/rsnapshot hourly: completed successfully
[2016-10-20T06:06:31] /usr/bin/rsnapshot hourly: completed successfully
Is anyone else seeing this? Is there an easy fix?
Many thanks,

F24 and general problems (fonts, GNOME extensions...)
by Alex
Hi,
I've just upgraded from fedora23 to fedora24 on my desktop, and the
fonts have changed. They now appear to be much smaller by default, and
perhaps not as well-defined (anti-aliased?).
I don't even know where to start to troubleshoot this issue. I've been
using Linux for decades, but haven't followed GNOME and font
development.
Another issue relates to gnome-tweak-tool and GNOME extensions.
When the system is idle for a few minutes, the screensaver is enabled
and a password is required to unlock it. I used gnome-tweak-tool in
the past to disable this, but it's been enabled again.
Many of the extensions are disabled, and visiting extensions.gnome.org
with Chrome says "We cannot detect a running copy of GNOME on this
system, so some parts of the interface may be disabled," preventing me
from installing any extensions or enabling the ones that are currently
disabled.
When viewing the Appearance section, "Shell theme" is disabled with an
exclamation point next to it.
What can I do to enable extensions in Chrome again?
Thanks,
Alex

dev ops --thoughts??
by bruce
Hi guys.
Thanks for your inputs on the fetching/getting of a file from a dir!
As Rick pointed out, the ultimate soln will be the use of
gearman/rabbitMQ, or some other queueing process, with the clients
popping the data off the queue..
I've got a different question/thought as well.
Assume I have a VM and i login, and start a process...
I can watch (takes a long time).. and see if/when the process dies..
Fix it, restart, etc..
This is doable.. for one VM.. not an issue..
But, if I have 50-100!!
My thought is I can create a process/script (whatever) and do a rexec
to each of the child clients, fire up the process and they should
start to run.
However, I'd have no way of logging in to see what the process is
actually doing. (I know. There should have been logging to
appropriately capture all of this!!)
So, I thought, hey, use screen. Screen would allow the ability to
rexec into screen, and via Screen, run the targetProcess.. Should
work, yes/no?
-Although, I can't seem to find pointers on how to chain the
rexec/Screen to work.
What I'd really like, would be a devOps soln (simple/quick/dirty) to
allow me to be able to fire up a bunch of apps across a bunch of VMs,
and to periodically have a way to generate a remote "screenshot" of
the running process.
Thoughts/Comments??
Thanks for any pointers.
If I have a vm and I want to "check" on the

Using screen on fedora24
by Alex
Hi,
I've just upgraded from fedora23 to fedora24 on my desktop. For some
reason now when I run GNU screen, it no longer sets the hostname in
the footer at the bottom of the screen. I typically start screen like
this, from a terminal window:
[alex@sage ~]$ ssh-agent bash
[alex@sage ~]$ ssh-add
Enter passphrase for /home/alex/.ssh/id_rsa:
Identity added: /home/alex/.ssh/id_rsa (/home/alex/.ssh/id_rsa)
Identity added: /home/alex/.ssh/id_dsa (/home/alex/.ssh/id_dsa)
[alex@sage ~]$ screen
Starting ssh first or just screen without ssh doesn't make a
difference. For some reason, the footer I've configured (years ago) no
longer displays the hostname and current directory, but instead just
"bash".
Is someone familiar enough with screen to be able to look at my config
and see if the upgrade somehow changed something or has an option that
is no longer supported?
If you have a ~/.screenrc that you know works with fedora24, I'd love
to compare.

Splash screen -
by Bob Goodwin
.
For the last several versions of Fedora, back to F-22 and probably
before that, when I starttxfce the xffce splash screen I selected is
displayed for less than a second and immediately replaced by an ugly
gray screen with a "spinning worm" in the center that just does nothing
else for perhaps ten seconds, in a vm it is has been nearly 30 seconds!
I do "# ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target
/etc/systemd/system/default.target" and startxfce4 from the text screen
if that matters ...
This is not a real problem but an annoyance, there are times when I
reboot several times and I always wonder how I could change this, have
looked but don't see where that screen is coming from; it happens on at
least three computers and for several versions and I would like to
change it if possible.
Any suggestions appreciated,
Bob
