Building kernel from source rpm
by JD
what are the options to give rpmbuild in order
to ONLY build for current installed architecture
and NOTHING else!! Also, would like to inhibit
the build of the debug versions as well.
Would only want to build for currently installed
fedora kernel architecture, the following:
kernel
kernel-devel
kernel-headers
kernel-modules-extra
kernel-tools
kernel-tools-libs
kernel-tools-libs-devel

Fedora 22 - no external monitor after kernel update
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I've just installed Fedora 22. The external monitor (Intel HD Graphics
5500) worked fine initially. Then I ran an update of all packages except
for the kernel, external monitor still worked.
Then I updated the kernel, going from 4.0.4 to 4.1.6 - now the external
monitor does not work.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Wehereas kernels before 3.19, such as 3.11, handle it just fine.
What is the most recent kernel that correctly handles Broadcom 43222?

F22 - ESMTP works from CLI but has problems with cron jobs
by Philip Rhoades
People,
Firstly - I have uninstalled anacron.
ESMTP works on my new WS OK and delivers mail to my server on the LAN
quite happily but if try a simple cron job - with NO redirection to
output file, cron tries to mail me job done information but has problems
with ESMTP. If I use:
crontab -e
and add:
34 01 * * * echo $HOME
I get these errors in /var/log/messages:
/bin/mktemp: failed to create directory via template
/.esmtp_queue/XXXXXXXX: Permission denied
ie "$HOME" is empty - so in:
/bin/esmtp-wrapper
I changed:
qdir="$HOME/.esmtp_queue"
to:
qdir="/home/phil/.esmtp_queue"
then the error I get is:
crond: /usr/sbin/sendmail: line 43: /dev/stdin: Permission denied
Line 43 in the wrapper is:
cat </dev/stdin >"$mdir/mail" || ret=1
Why is cron causing a problem where the CLI is fine?
Thanks,
Phil.

Recreating SMB printer -> PDF -> input program
by Gary Stainburn
Back in the good old days (F9) I could set up a dummy SMB printer which would
accept the file and then call a program to deal with it. I used this with
Apple PS drivers on Windows PC's to create PDF files and email them back to
the user. These were back in the days before windows PDF printe drivers such
as CutePDF.
I'm now looking to re-create this on a more modern Fedora box (19, or 21
depending which box I use). I've installed CUPS-PDF and configured a virtual
printer. However, I have two problems:
1) the printer is not storing the file in the directory specified. I set up
the connection as cups-pdf:/var/spool/cups-pdf/created but it stored the file
in /root/Desktop/
2) I can't see any method of being able to trigger a program to handle the
newly created file.
Can anyone suggest what I need to do to sort these problems, or to suggest an
alternative.

stupid gnome notifications question
by Kseniya Blashchuk
Hi everybody!
I use Fedora 22 with Gnome 3.16. I have installed a gnotifier firefox addon
and started receiving strange mail notifications (attached). They became
really abusive so I decided to turn them off. Disabling and even removing
the add-on didn't help. I also use gnotifier for thunderbird, and it sends
separate mail notifications, so that's not thunderbird. I tried disabling
all notifications from firefox and thunderbird in the Gnome settings - no
luck. Seems that something else causes them to appear (but what??). Does
anybody have any ideas?
Any help is appreciated.[image: notify.jpg]

HD+ LED-backlit LCD screen washed out
by CS DBA
Hi All;
I've just installed Fedora 21 (KDE Spin) on a new Lenovo Thinkpad T450s
with a
HD+ LED-backlit LCD screen with the following video card:
Intel HD Graphics 5500
Fedora is running great except the screen is washed out, colors are blah
and its borderline hard to read.
The following driver is installed:
xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.916-4.20141117.fc21.x86_64
Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks in advance

After a power cut my machine cannot boot
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
While doing
yum update
on a F21 machine, there occured a power cut. And now I cannot boot the
machine, and when I use the rescue mode and try to run again
yum update
I get the following error:
"/lib64/libidn.so.11: file too short".
Any ideas? I have already tried to get the libidn rpm from a repo, but
again I get the same error with wget ("/lib64/libidn.so.11: file too
short").
Thanks in advance,
Paul
