using a local computer for a remote install of F22...
by dcw
I would like to perform a remote install for F22 but use a computer on
the local network for the vnc connection.
I have the following in grub:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-remote
repo=hd:sda4:/Fedora-Server-netinst-i386-22.iso noselinux
ks.device=00:00:00:00:000:05 ks=hd:sda4:/ks.cfg --noip6 vnc
vncconnect=10.10.1.1 vncpassword=xxxxxx ramdisk_size=8192 panic=30
It goes to the internet to find 10.10.1.1.
I have 2 nic cards, 1 goes to the internet and the other is for local
computers.
I have not been able to find the setting I need for the vnc connection
to use the local network nic.
Is the setting I need go in grub.cfg or in ks.cfg?
Thanks for any help,
David

I've rebooted my server for the first time in ages and now my Google Cloud

If I try to print to one of the printers, it gets added to the queue but then
it just sits there.
I've no ideas how many changes have been made to the server since it was last
rebooted, nor even when that was. I've done a yum update but as it's a Fedora
19 server there were no updates to apply.
Google searching doesn't seem to be helping so any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Something is deleting /var/run/syslogd.pid
by Sam Varshavchik
After updating to F22, after the system is up for some period of time, I
have not determine for how long, looks like something removes
/var/run/syslogd.pid
Consequently, logrotate eventually rotates /var/log/messages to
/var/log/messages-yyyymmdd (same for several other /var/log files), but
can't find syslogd's PID to SIGHUP it, so that syslog can reopen the log
files.
I vaguely recall seeing some config files that defines expiration/cleanup
retention period for stuff in /var/run. Anyone recall where that lives?

mouse pointer dissapeared after kde update
by Martín Marqués
Hi,
I'm running Fedora 22 on my laptop and yesterday I ran a yum update
which updated quite some kde* packages (I use kde as my WM).
The thing is that my mouse pointer disappeared. Mouse works, but just
don't know exactly where the pointer is so I end up guessing, mainly
using the hover changes to spot where the pointer is at any moment.
Pointer isn't even there when kdm comes up.
Change theme for pointer doesn't work, and the .xsession-error logs
say nothing as well as kdm.log and Xorg.*.log.
On the tty terminals, pointer works fine with gpm.
Any idea what could be the problem, or how to debug it?
Thanks!

Some CD's cannot be mounted
by Antonio M
I was going to copy some images from my HD to a CD for a friend a mine,
when suddenly I realized that some old CD's are not read, that if I burn a
CD (aldo a CD-RW) after burning it, it is not mounted in Nautilus (same
tests on two different machines).
i am really surprised and worried about my backups...

Biting the bullet?
by Rolf Turner
I have finally reached a stage where I may have to bite the bullet,
grasp the nettle, screw my courage to the sticking place .... and
upgrade my Fedora version.
I am currently running Fedora 17. Which is of course antediluvian. But
everything I have seen on this list with respect to upgrading terrifies
me. Disasters seem to lurk everywhere and I haven't the skills to cope
with disasters. Nor do I have access to any support in respect of Fedora.
So, if you will bear with me, I'd like to start off with a preliminary
question:
The seeming necessity for upgrading arises from a pressing need to
upgrade "R" to version 3.2.0. When I try to build this version I get a
load of error messages (basically coming from gcc I think) like unto:
> connections.o: In function `gzcon_write':
> /home/rolf/Desktop/Rinst/R-3.2.0/src/main/connections.c:5469: undefined reference to `deflate'
There were also complaints about undefined references to inflate, crc32,
deflateEnd, inflateEnd, inflateReset, inflateInit2_, deflateInit2_,
compress, uncompress, and zlibVersion, many of which were issued
repeatedly. It finally gave up, saying:
> collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
People from the R-help mailing list said that the problem lies in some
"compression related" libs --- zlib, bzlib, liblzma.
I tried installing zlib and zlib-devel (using yum install) and was told
in both cases that my system was up-to-date. I tried installing bzlib
and was told there was nothing by that name. I then installed lzma and
lzma-devel (*that* seemed to work) but it didn't help. Same undefined
references problems as before.
It was also suggested that I try building R-patched. So I tried; no
help there either.
So: Can anyone suggest what I can or should do to overcome this problem
*without* having to upgrade?
Given that the answer to my preliminary question is "No", can anyone be
so kind as to provide me with a *recipe* for upgrading, expressed in
simple-minded terms that I can understand? Something of the form:
(1) First, do this.
(2) Second, do something else.
(3) Third .....
You get the idea. I'm afraid vague generalities would be of no help to
me, since I am a bear of very little brain and long words bother me.
(I know that step (0) is to make a backup of all my user files. Which I
know how to do and will do.)
A specific question, I guess, is: Do I use yum for such an upgrade?
(And if so, what is the syntax?) Or do I use fedup? (And likewise, what
is the syntax?)
If no-one wants to write out a set of instructions for me (and
admittedly I can see that they may well not want to) can someone point
me at such a set of instructions somewhere on the web? Again, they
would have to be expressed in a very simple-minded way. ("Upgrading
Fedora for Dummies".)
Everlastingly grateful for any help that anyone can extend.
cheers,
Rolf Turner

Removing lvm2 takes away too much
by Javier Perez
I do not use lvm2, I installed btrfs
Nevertheless I saw that the installer added lvm2
Now, when I am asking dnf to remove it I see that it also wants to remove
anaconda
initial-setup
cockpit
docker
and a few related files.
Why?
Not that I will miss any of them because this is my home computer, but does
it mean that if in the future I want to play around with docker and
cockpit, I have to install lvm2 again even if I do not use it?
It does not feel right
