F21: How do you turn on syntax highlighting in vim?
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
After installing F21, I no longer seem to be able to control
syntax-highlighting.
I have the same 4 packages installed that I had on F18:
vim-common-7.4.475-2.fc21.x86_64
vim-enhanced-7.4.475-2.fc21.x86_64
vim-filesystem-7.4.475-2.fc21.x86_64
vim-minimal-7.4.475-2.fc21.x86_64
...
I also use the command:
:set syntax=on
and
:syntax on
with no results.
Thanks.

Managing Menu choices on the desktop in F21
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
After installing F21 on a x64 desktop, I proceeded to also install non-RPM
software.
For these types of software to appear in the menus, there are *.desktop
files in the directory:
/usr/share/applications
The software that I installed is OpenJUMP, a java-based GIS package
somewhat like Quantum-GIS (QGIS Desktop).
In the *.desktop file, there is a line that controls the submenu
placement; it looks like this:
Categories=Education;Geography;Science;
Howver, in this case OpenJUMP has also become it's own Category.
I would like to eliminate this, but the places that I've looked so far
(Settings -> Desktop) don't offer control of this.
I'm using Xfce as a desktop; but this phenomenon also appears in MATE,
Gnome, and Gnome Classic.
Where would I look or what file should I edit?
Much thanks,
Max Pyziur

5tFTW: Fedora conferences this summer, writing release notes, brainstorming a better onramp, and a GSOC reminder (2015-03-25)
by Matthew Miller
Fedora is a big project, and it’s hard to keep up with everything. This
series highlights interesting happenings in five different areas every
week. It isn’t comprehensive news coverage — just quick summaries with
links to each. Here are the five things for March 25th, 2015:
Join us at Flock (and book your hotel now)
------------------------------------------
Every year, we have a big planning and developers’ conference, Flock.
It alternates between Europe and North America, and this time around
will be at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New
York, from August 12th to 15th. Flock organizers just announced that
hotel reservations are open, as are talk submission. If you’re an
active contributor or are interested in becoming one, start planning
your trip now!

* http://flocktofedora.net/submit-a-talk/
Or, come to FUDCon in Pune, India
---------------------------------
In addition to Flock, we also hold annual gatherings in the
Asia/Pacific (APAC) and Latin America (LATAM) regions. These are
FUDCons — Fedora User and Developer Conferences. This year’s APAC
FUDCon will be held in Pune, India from June 26th to 28th.
Talk submissions for this conference are closed and the selection
committee working on choosing the best from over 140 submissions. There
will also be a BarCamp-style track, where sessions will be chosen by
attendees at the conference.
A limited amount of money is available for travel subsidies. See the
FUDCon planning wiki for details.

Help with the F22 release notes
-------------------------------
Fedora 22 is almost at the beta stage, with the final release slated
for May. That means it’s time to start writing the release notes, and
Fedora Documentation Project Lead Pete Travis put out a call for
volunteers on the Fedora Join List. As Pete notes, this is a great,
low-barrier way to get involved in Fedora — you don’t need a lot of
prior knowledge, just a little bit of interest in some piece of
software we include.
* https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/fedora-join/2015-March/000323.html
A more friendly ‘net presence for Fedora
----------------------------------------
This morning, Máirín Duffy led a brainstorming session on the topic of
enabling new contributors, with the eventual goal of developing a
modern Web interface to all aspects of the project for contributors,
both new and already deeply involved. Mo wrote a great summary blog
post afterward, and I highly recommend reading it if you’re interested
in bringing more contributors to Fedora — or just improving your own
workflows and interactions.

Google Summer of Code
---------------------
And finally, a reminder that Fedora is participating in the Google
Summer of Code. The application deadline is March 27 at 19:00 UTC;
please check out Fedora’s GSOC 2015 page if you’re interested in being
involved.

Can audio driver configure audio jacks
by David Highley
Can the linux audio driver configure the audio jacks on an ASUS H971
Plus motherboard? There are three jacks on the bord that are either line
out, line in, mic or front, center, back speakers. I need the latter
configuration and understand that this is driver configured on Windows
platforms. I'm running Fedora 21.

Only a reader of the fedora list so far, but just sub'ed, so hope this
post works...
I had that issue and was able to trace it down to the google-chrome
repo.
The time stamp given does not exactly match the file itself but it does
match the time stamp given inside the file.
cd /var/cache/yum/x86_64/21/google-chrome/
grep time repomd.xml
<timestamp>1427219463</timestamp>
<timestamp>1427219463</timestamp>
<timestamp>1427219463</timestamp>
date -d "Mar 19 23:01:22 2015" +%s 1426831282
So, you can see that mine no longer matches (it used to) and is a later
time. I simply deleted that file and then did "sudo yum update". It
took some days but a fresher file did finally show up and I have
stopped getting the cron alerts.

fedora 21 -- 2 different gpu --bmc/ipmi ASPEED -- Nvidia GTX760-- how to select primary
by Kevin Abbey
Hi,
I have a Supermicro X10SRA-F (with IPMI bmc with iKVM) and Nvidia gpu
which is booting ok but after grub the local display is blank.
I loaded the optimized settings in the bios, then edited in bios:
1. IO --> PCIe/PCI/Pnp --> make sure ASPM Support is disabled,
2. set VGA priority PCI-E slot that you have the video card connected to.
3. Save the changes and reboot.
When I boot a fedora live dvd the video works. It worked a few times
initially when I boot the ssd disk with the fedora installation. Now it
gets to grub, boots kernel and then nothing but a blank screen, yet the
screen does not go to sleep. It appears to still have a signal in fact
and X for the mouse even was active twice.
Using a remote ssh connection and the iKVM I tried:
-- reinstalling the Nvidia driver
-- removing the proprietary nvidia driver and using nouveau but that had
the same resulting blank screen.
These vga cards present are:
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX
760] (rev a1)
0a:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ASPEED Technology, Inc. ASPEED
Graphics Family (rev 30)
While it is possible to reinstall the system and hope the problem
disappears by default, I would much rather understand how to edit the
display management configuration to make this work properly. Since the
system-config-display was removed I have not learned how to edit the
display options except for the basic display preferences dialog.
Additional guidance is appreciated.
Thank you,
Kevin

hourly yum cron
by anlarye
Every hour I get the same notice from a default yum cron job.
/etc/cron.hourly/0yum-hourly.cron:
Not using downloaded repomd.xml because it is older than what we have:
Current : Thu Mar 19 23:01:22 2015
Downloaded: Thu Mar 19 17:54:56 2015
If I run any of the following commands the next hourly yum cron will go by
without the notice but following that this same notice returns. Including
having the same time date stamp on the downloaded repomd.xml file
yum clean expire-cache
yum clean metadata
yum clean all
Any help in getting this fixed?
Thanks

mdadm raid1 confuses fedora 21?
by Tom Horsley
I enabled mdmonitor, and created a raid1 while booted
into fedora 20 and everything is wonderful. It recognizes
the entry in fstab and boots no problem. (I'm not
using the raid1 to boot from, BTY, just as a data disk).
I then tried to boot the fedora 21 partition on the
same machine (being sure to enable mdmonitor in it
as well), and it never finishes booting. (Though
a fedora 21 live USB stick boots fine).
Has something changed in the vicinity of mdadm
in f21? Do I need the initramfs rebuilt or
something?
Right now it stops booting with messages on the
screen something like "/dev/sde is a large
disk, trying to use READCAPACITY" and just
sits there. (Where /dev/sde is one of the two
disks I have in the array).

calendar servers?
by Ian Malone
I've got a project I'm developing for the raspberry pi which requires
a calendar server. While it will probably run on raspbian it would be
handy if I could do some of the work on Fedora. Is radicale the only
calendar server? It's the only one that shows up in a DNF search. They
have a pretty webpage, but I'm a little put off by their "Development
choices: lazy" thing, such as, "The Radicale Server assumes that the
clients are perfect and that protocol violations do not exist."
Under raspbian there's the Darwin Calendar server (calendarserver)
though that has it's own problems in lacking TLS support.
