pvcreate
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
Using fdisk I create a partition of 59Go (/dev/sdxy)
Then I do a pvcreate /dev/sdxy)
pvdisplay says:
/dev/sdb7" is a new physical volume of "38.00 GiB"
This probably results from a previous partitioning.
How can I clear this glitch?
Thank

pidgin video chat
by Amadeus W.M.
Does anyone know how to do video chat in pidgin? I can't figure it out
for the life of me. I click on a contact name and the chat window opens.
Then, under Conversation -> Media I have 3 options: Audio call / Video
call / Audio and video call. But all are inactive (grayed out) and so
they can't be selected. Does this mean that pidgin has been compiled in
Fedora without audio/video support?
I am, however able to configure the Voice/Video Settings by going to
Tools -> Plugins -> Voice/Video Settings, then click on the "Configure
Plugin" button. So pidgin does see my camera and microphone. But what
else do I need to be able to actually use them?
I've searched the web for this, of course, and I couldn't find a
definitive answer. All information is outdated, or for other
distributions, or simply vague. For instance:
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/vv
or the user guide (which is really a FAQ):
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin
Do I need to recompile pidgin with some non-free codecs enabled?
Thanks for any help!

Problem booting Fedora 21
by Daniel Jonsson
Hi,
I'm running Fedora 21 Workstation on a desktop and a laptop, and on both
machines I am experiencing problems trying to boot them.
The problem is that when I boot either of the computers, it gets stuck during
the Plymouth splash screen, when the Fedora logo is being filled up. It can be
stuck there for tens of minutes until I lose patience and do a hard reset on
the computer. About 1/5 of the boot attempts succeed and are very snappy, while
the other 4/5 get stuck and require a hard reset.
However, I think I have solved it on the laptop by disabling
`nfs-client.target` with `$ sudo systemctl disable nfs-client.target`, and I
suspect that it might be related to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1183321.
I tried doing the same on my desktop, but it does not seem to have made any
difference. It still requires quite a few boot attempts before it reaches the
login screen.
What I need help with is how I am supposed to proceed with debugging and
locating the cause of the problem. As far as I know a journalctl entry is not
created in `$ journalctl --list-boots` if I do a hard reset during the startup
process. And `$ systemd-analyze` does not show any strange things because
I am of course only able to execute it after a successful boot, for example on
my laptop:
Startup finished in 1.454s (kernel) + 1.412s (initrd) + 2.608s (userspace) = 5.475s
Do you have any suggestions for how I am supposed to proceed with the matter?
Best regards,
Daniel Jonsson

Assistance building a backup server
by Alex
Hi,
I have a fedora20 system acting as a backup server, and I've exceeded
its capacity. I'd like to build a bigger one, probably using fedora21.
I currently have a 3TB backup system using five 1TB disks in RAID5.
Restore times in case of disk failure are already exceedingly long, so
I'd like to consider another method of providing redundancy, and would
like suggestions.
I'd like to have 6TB of usable space using 2TB disks.
Is ext4 still best for this?
Some RAID variant or is there something better?
Are there any NAS projects that may be beneficial?
Thanks for any ideas.

rsyslog
by Dan Irwin
Hi all,
What kind of secret voodoo does one need to use rsyslog on a systemd
system? Is it even possible?
I have installed it, and I only get kernel boot messages in
/var/log/messages.
I find journalctl to be fundamentally braindead, lacking features which we
have taken for granted for decades in redhat/rhel/fedora/centos.
(Seriously, whats the wisdom of keeping ALL logs around forever?, and in an
easily corruptible format).
I found something on the fedora web site which said to just install
rsyslog... Clearly obsolete or invalid advice.
Thank you.

Problem installing Fedora 22 Alpha RC3
by Lawrence E Graves
I have tried with a dvd and with usb and the only place I got any
success in installing Fedora 22 was in my virtual machine. It there
something I am missing that is causing this problem with installing on
my PC or my laptop. Please advise if there is a step I am missing in the
download or the install process.

Thunderbird does not display images in email messages
by JD
I have been having a problem with TB for quite some time,
and I am getting rather tired of the problem.
Images in messages that are sent to me by users of windows
are not displayed in TB. Rather, all I see are empty boxes
where images are supposed to be.
This is not to say that every message I get from windows users
containing images are treated this way by TB.
I am just saying that some individuals I know, who use windows,
and send me email containing images are treated this way by TB.
Is there a setting that I need to set?
Other people send me images all the time, and I have no
problem viewing them in TB.

Fedora 20: After running yum update the Mate Terminal doesn't start anymore
by Jim Lewis
I ran "yum update" on my Fedora 20 system a few days ago. I normally
don't do this as something always breaks and in this case it was the
Mate-Terminal. I already had a few terminals open so I can still use the
system. Clicking on either the Terminal icon in the panel, or using
Applications->Mate Terminal does the same thing: There's a message on the
bottom panel that says "Starting MATE" that stays there for about 6
seconds and then it disappears. No new terminal is created. I can still
use my existing terminals and I can create a new one if I run
"mate-terminal &" in it. I have looked at the Properties dialog of the
Terminal and nothing seems out of place (i.e. looks just like my other
systems).
I have not rebooted yet in case there is something I should do first.
Any ideas? Of course a reboot might just fix this but I wanted to ask
before I did that. Or maybe a reboot is needed after an update and I am
too ignorant to know this.
BTW, I tried to find this problem on the net but did not have any luck.
Also, this is not a critical issue, the system seems fine otherwise.
