Fedora 21 on a GIGABYTE P34Gv2-CF4 (NVIDIA GeForc GTX 860M)
by CS DBA
All;
I'm thinking about getting a GIGABYTE P34Gv2-CF4 with these specs:
- 14.0” FHD 16:9 LED IPS Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) Anti-Glare
Matte Type Screen
- 4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4710HQ (2.5GHz - 3.5GHz, 6MB
Intel® Smart Cache)
- NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 860M (4.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 w/ Optimus™
Technology
- 16GB DDR3 1866MHz [SKU-444BX] (Crucial Ballistix Sport Dual Channel
Memory (2x8GB SODIMMS))
-512GB Crucial M550 Solid State mSATA III (Read 550MB/s - Write 500MB/s)
- 1TB Crucial M550 SSD (Read 550MB/s - Write 500MB/s (SATA III))
- Smart Li-ion Battery (4-Cell)
Most of the hardware seems compatible enough, I only have 2 concerns:
1) the 512GB Crucial M550 Solid State mSATA III, can I install the OS &
boot off this drive?
2) the NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 860M (4.0GB) GDDR5, I've seen some posts of
folks having issues with this card,
will it work with the open source nouveau drivers (even if I get
less functionality)? Or with the kmod-nvidia packages?
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance...

problems starting bacula2
by Jouk Jansen
Hi All,
I'm running F21. When trying to start bacula2 as a deamon I get failures.
What I do (as root):
systemctl stop bacula-fd.service
systemctl disable bacula-fd.service
systemctl enable bacula2-fd.service
systemctl start bacula2-fd.service
However if I rum from the command-line
/usr/sbin/bacula2-fd -f -c /etc/bacula2/bacula-fd.conf -u root -g root
It runs fine and backups are being created.
Anyone any idea what could be wrong?
I have to change from bacula-fd to bacula2-fd because bacula-fd in F21 fails
to communicate with the "director" and "storage" that run an earlier
version of bacula on a centOS 5 system.
Regards
Jouk

Trouble playing MP4 videos under Fedora 21 -- Gstreamer thinks a codec is missing which is actually installed
by Jonathan Ryshpan
MP4 videos played OK under Fedora 20, but when I attempt to play one
under Fedora 21, I get a popup from Dragon Player (KDE's default video
player).
Dragon Player requires additional plugins for this operation
MPEG-4 AAC decoder
MPEG-4 Video decoder
The following plugins are required. Do you want to search for
these now?
When I click Continue, after a delay to download a cache, I get this
popup:
To be Installed
gstreamer1-libav
gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free
gstreamer1-bad-freeworl
gstreamer1-plugins-good
But when I click Continue, after another delay to download a cache, I
get this popup:
The package that is trying to be installed is already installed.
Details
gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free-1.4.4-1.fc21.x86_64 is already
installed
System is
4 processor x86_64 (AMD)
Nvidia Geforce 9500GT video card
Fedora 21 with all updates
Nouveau video driver
KDE 4.14.3
Dragon player 2.0
Where do I go from here?
Thanks - jon

Fedora 21: Dark login screen during and after install
by Jim Lewis
Hello all,
This is pretty strange so I thought I better mention it. Here's the
scenario:
- Have already installed Fedora 21 Mate-Compiz Spin on a Lenovo T500
laptop that I bought from IBM in 2009. Thanks to the help from this forum
it seems to be running well.
- Decided to install it on one of my newer T500s. It is a bit different as
it has a fingerprint reader and built in camera. Using the same DVD as
before, right at the first installation panel, something happens to the
screen. At first it looks just fine, then it blacks out for about a second
then comes back on but very dark. There is a prompt right in the center of
the screen asking for a password. WTF? I don't remember this from the
install on the other system. I press Enter a bunch of times, the screen
goes back to normal, and proceeds with the next steps.
- Every goes fine until the reboot. That same dark screen comes up. It
will not accept my password (for guest1) until I leave it empty. The
screen comes up with the Computer, Home, and Trash icons but no panels. I
can find no way to add them.
- Thinking that this is hopeless I decide to run a full update (yum -y
update). It completes and I shutdown cold and then reboot. Damn thing
comes up just fine, with panels too. It's been running fine for about 24
hours now.
- I looked at dmesg on both systems. I see this on the newer one:
[ 2.885818] VGA switcheroo: detected switching method
\_SB_.PCI0.VID_.ATPX handle
I also checked lspci on both but don't see anything relevant.
I am concerned that the dark screen will return someday and my panels
will be lost again. If anyone has even a clue as to what is going on I
sure would like to hear it. At this point I suspect Fedora 21 doesn't
like something in the BIOS on this "newer" machine. Note that Fedora
20 installed with no issues and runs great on it.

SELinux preventing lightdm to login
by Suvayu Ali
Hi all,
I just updated from F20 to F21, and I cannot login to my desktop. I use
XFCE with Lightdm. I looked at the journal, this is what I found:
$ journalctl -b -r SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER=setroubleshoot

Without a gui, I cannot quite search the Internet easily for open bugs.
Any thoughts how I should proceed?
Thanks in advance.

Nouveau driver is slow in Fedora 21
by Jonathan Ryshpan
Scrolling is painfully slow in Firefox using the nouveau driver under
Fedora 21. In fact the whole system seems slow, but that's another
issue. Has anyone tried out the proprietary driver for my system, which
is:
4 processor x86_64 mother board
Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT graphics card
Fedora 21
KDE 4.14.3

howto turn off WOL?
by Neal Becker
If I suspend my laptop with enet connected, it immediately wakes again (yes, my
suspend is working again!)
I can turn off WOL using
sudo /sbin/ethtool -s p3p1 wol d
What is the recommended way to set this option permanently?
