Sound not working after a freeze and hard reboot
by Someone
My sound has abruptly stopped working several times in the past, and at
some point somebody on here suggested I try running the command "alsactl
init", which fixed the issue both presently and for each subsequent
sound breakage. However, this time it isn't working. I've confirmed that
none of the sliders are at 0 in `alsamixer`.
Anyone have ideas about what I could do to fix the problem?
Thanks.

Virtualbox size -

Virtual box seems to work ok but it only produces a 12 inch window on
this 23 inch monitor and after extensive googling I have not found a way
to make it bigger.
Perhaps someone can tell me how?

Evernote client?
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I have the Evernote app on my Android devices and I'm looking for an
Evernote client for Fedora. yum lists Everpad but I haven't had any luck
with it. It authenticated correctly but then just sits in the KDE system
panel and doesn't react to being clicked.
Can Wiznote, Gnote, Tomboy etc. etc. talk to Evernote services?
Advice welcome.

Fedora 20 Disconnecting
by Joao Daniel Neves
Hi All,
I upgraded my desktop OS from Fedora 17 to Fedora 20. It
is a simple desktop, used for general proposes. I used Fedora 17 for a
long time and "disconnection problems" did not happened .But since I
moved to Fedora 20 I'm noticing a lot disconnections.
What could be happening ?
Additional information:
I if I switch to a live OS (i,e Ubuntu, Kali, Fedora 17) these problem do not happen.
I know that it is not very smart, but I tried to used static IP, but no luck, I keep disconnecting.
I have pasted some logs:

vlan support - Is it possible to have only tagged frames?
by Robert Moskowitz
I know that to support vlaning, I have a ifcfg-eth0.n file with the
entry vlan=yes and this will support vlan tag value n.
But can I leave off the default ifcfg-eth0 file and have NO untagged usage?
I know I can configure my switch to only provided tagged frames to a port.

ignoring keyboard repeats in scripting
by Tim
I'm using the following script on Fedora and CentOS computers (depending
on which machine is handy), which responds to a keypress, and have a
problem with keyboard repeats (when someone holds down the key too
long). I can't turn it off in the BIOS, and I'm using the old run level
3 (text only mode), and settings made in a GUI don't seem to affect how
the keyboard gets used. The computer is too old, slow, and not
compatible enough with X drivers, to run in the GUI mode.
The problem is that some people don't just tap the key, they hold their
finger down on it. I've used the kbdrate to delay the onset as much as
possible, and slow down the rate, but it's not really enough. And
haven't found a solution to completely stop the keyboard repeating, or
have the script ignore them. The script is used at a sporting event, to
play out a pre-recorded handicap count (e.g. "ready, set, 1, 2, 3, ...).
Ideally, I'd like to make the script ignore keyboard repeats, and have
normal keyboard repeats in the command line. It's quite a pain to edit
any scripts if you can't get the cursor keys to repeat (on that note, I
wish the OS allowed cursor keys to repeat, and perhaps some others, but
not alphabetical keys, I see little reason to be able to type 50 letter
A's in a row).
And here's the script.
#! /bin/bash
while true
do
read -p "$*"
killall -q paplay
printf "Speaking now, press the ENTER key to stop"
paplay handicap-count.ogg&
read -p "$*"
killall -p paplay
printf "Stopped speaking, press the ENTER key to start"
done

Some newbie questions
by Phil Edwards
Hello all
Please forgive my ignorance, but I've decided to upgrade to Linux. I've had
a play with both Ubuntu and Fedora 20 (both with the LXDE desktop) and done
a few installs, updates, application installs, etc. and am getting more
confident / knowledgeable as I go.
I have decided to go for Fedora 20 with either the Gnome or KDE desktop
(not decided which yet, so I'll have a play and see what suits best).
However, I do have a few questions and would be grateful for some answers /
confirmation of my assumptions.....
1. I am using older hardware - AMD Semperon 3000+ (socket 754), which I
understand is a 64 bit CPU. Will this run better, worse or no differently
with the 64 bit OS over the 32 bit?
2. Currently I have 1Gb DDR400 RAM, although I have some 1Gb modules on
their way to me so within a few days I'll hopefully have 3Gb (but I may
have a dodgy DIMM socket so it might only be 2). Will I be able to do a
graphical install with only the current 1Gb or am I better waiting until
the new memory arrives?
Ultimately I plan to install 2 drives in the box - one for the system and
the other for the home directory structure, which in itself raises a few
more questions.....
3. Am I correct in my assumption that my mail client (I will be using
Thunderbird) stores all its e-mails and settings in a hidden directory
within the home directory?
4. If I do a reinstall later, will the OS pick up that I already have the
home directory structure on a separate drive and automatically configure to
it or will I have to do a bit of tinkering?
5. Will the reinstalled OS automatically recreate the user accounts based
on the home directories that exist or will I still need to do that?
6. If I need to recreate the user accounts manually, will they
automatically map to the correct user directories in the existing home
directory structure or will that be more tinkering?
7. Besides my data, will the system also be able to access my e-mails,
user-specific settings, etc. set up within the previous install?
8. If I later upgrade my "data" drive, is it just a case of copying the
home directory structure onto the new drive, plug it in and away I go, or
will I need to configure the OS to recognise the new drive first?
Apologies for the length of my request, but I think that is about it for
now. I'm sure however, that I'll have loads more questions / cries for help
later.
Many thanks in anticipation of some informative replies.

Fwd: what is the latest kernel in FC20?
by Pal, Laszlo
Any thoughts? Is this. 201 kernel already in updates repo? If yes, why my

Hi,
A few weeks ago I had to upgrade my kernel due to some nvidia related
issue. Currently I have the following
Installed Packages
Name : kernel
Arch : x86_64
Version : 3.15.10
Release : 200.fc20
Size : 137 M
Repo : installed
>From repo : updates
Installed Packages
Name : kernel-headers
Arch : x86_64
Version : 3.15.10
Release : 200.fc20
Size : 3.2 M
Repo : installed
>From repo : updates
Some of my stuff needed kernel headers to build modules, but cannot find
headers
so, I try to reinstall them
Installed package kernel-headers-3.15.10-200.fc20.x86_64 (from updates) not
available.
Error: Nothing to do
I've checked the package list and I can see some similar package with patch
level 201 but yum cannot install it. What's wrong here?
Thanks

Hi, I had the same problem but was able to resolve it using the
info in this bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634736
Either of the methods in Comment 12 (force early load of bridge module) and
in Comments 19+23 (udev rule to reload the bridge-specific parameters
upon loading the bridge kernel module) works for me.
