zeroing out part of an SDcard
by Robert Moskowitz
More on my compressing images from SDcards.
I only need the boot info and 1st partition, so I remove the other
partitions, but of course there is still 1s out there so it will not
compress efficiently. I want to zero out the end of the card so first I
use fdisk:
# fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 7.4 GiB, 7969177600 bytes, 15564800 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x0009e2ad
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 8192 1007615 499712 83 Linux
Then dd:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M seek=1007620
dd: ‘/dev/sdb’: cannot seek: Invalid argument
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.000652852 s, 0.0 kB/s
======================
seems you cannot seek on an SDcard. How do I do this? Since the change
in partition 1 is trivial, if I have to start again from an SDcard with
all 3 paritions, I can do that...

CA pinning for DNF (sslcacert honoured?)
by Joonas Lehtonen
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA512
Hi,
since it has been suggested that I should file bug [1] (CA pinning for
mirrors.fedoraproject.org for yum) also against yum's successor dnf
[2], I'm wondering if sslcacert is also understood by dnf?
from the man page of dnf.conf:
"DNF by default uses the global configuration file at
/etc/dnf/dnf.conf and all *.repo files found under /etc/yum.repos.d."
That tells me that dnf parses the same repo files as dnf, but there is
no 'sslcacert' option in dnf.conf 's man page. So I'm wondering
whether just the man page is not complete or dnf has no such option (yet)?
next step would be to simply try it..

5tFTW: LinuxCon, Fedora Governance/Leadership, Design FAD, F21 Alpha Freeze, and Fedora in Linux Pro Magazine (2014-08-19)
by Matthew Miller
Reposted from <http://fedoramagazine.org/5tftw-2014-08-19/>.
Fedora is a big project, and it’s hard to follow it all. This series
highlights interesting happenings in five different areas every week. It
isn’t comprehensive news coverage — just quick summaries with links to
each. Here are the five things for August 19th, 2014 (actually posted on
the 22nd, because sometimes life is like that):
LinuxCon!
---------
You may have noticed that this nominally-Tuesday update is actually
appearing on *Friday*. That’s because I’m at LinuxCon North America in
Chicago, and I kept thinking "I’ll have a few minutes to work on that…"
and it turns out, nope.
In any case, a lot of cool stuff going on here, and a lot of Fedora
positivity. My talk on Fedora.next was well-attended and (I think!)
well-received, with a lot of good questions and feedback. There were
also some great related sessions, including Joe Brockmeier’s talk about
Project Atomic (with a Fedora-based live demo), and in general a *lot*
of Fedora users all around.

Fedora Governance and Leadership Structure
------------------------------------------
I mentioned last week that there was a session on the future of Fedora
governance and leadership at our big Flock conference. As noted last
week, Flock is great for high-bandwidth discussion but not the right
place to actually make decisions, because we can’t possibly get all of
the community in one place (as much as I’d like to!). So, now, there’s
an important followup discussion on the board-discuss list. This
affects us all, so *your* participation is important.

Fedora "Design.next" Activity Day
---------------------------------
The Fedora Design Team is organizing a Fedora Activity Day (which we
casually call a "FAD") for January 2015. See the FAD wiki page and
mailing list thread for details. It will be held at the Red Hat
headquarters near Boston, Massachusetts, and as as with all Premier
Fedora Events some travel funding may be available as needed. The
Design Team is an awesome, friendly group with an easy join process,
and if you’d like to get involved and help design the visual and user
experience future of the Fedora, now’s a great time.

Fedora 21 Alpha Freeze: Any minute now!
---------------------------------------
Fedora Release Engineering is still working out some kinks in the
process, and dealing with a mass rebuild required by a glibc
compatibility break, but we expect to have that settled *really soon
now*. That means that we’ll go into Alpha Freeze as soon as a test
compose is available. (You may see people referring to a "TC" — that’s
what we’re talking about.) All of this will be announced to the
devel-announce mailing list, (which you should be subscribed to if
you’re interested in following this sort of thing, even if you’re not a
Fedora developer).

Fedora in Linux Pro Magazine
----------------------------
Last week, we noted the Free from XP special edition from Linux New
Media, featuring Fedora. Fedora *also* features in Linux Pro Magazine’s
Issue #166, with articles on the Cinnamon and Mate desktops
environments, and the Fedora Robotics Suite included on the DVD. This
is available for order online now and should be in stores soon.

Vacation Next Week
------------------
I’ll be on vacation next week (and largely offline — time for a break
after a month of travel and conferences!). Since this "Tuesday" update
is running at the end of the week anyway, I think we’ll just have a
5tFTW hiatus, and I’ll update on *all of the things* in early
September.

What has replaced 70-persistent-net.rules
by Robert Moskowitz
I remember reading somewhere, what replaced it but can't find the
reference :(
udev USE to have:
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
But as I recall, with systemd, things have changed.
I need it to see what MAC addr is set for and interface name.

F20 XFCE: no right click
by sean darcy
Newly installed F20 on an Acer Aspire. XFCE.
The trackpad has no right click. In addition, I can't move or resize
windows. The paw or double arrow appears, but nothing happens when I try
to move it.
And, I can't "paint" text to copy it.
Thanks for any help.

Installing firmware for intel 7260
by Geoffrey Leach
I'm setting up a laptop with Fedora 19 up-to-date. The wireless chip is an Intel 7260.HMW, and I've confirmed that it works (under windows). The chip was not recognized by the install, so I did a yum install of iwl7260.firmware.noarch. That did not install the module, and insmod refuses to install either of the two ucode files. So, presumably they're not modules ("firmware" might be a clue?) So, how should I proceed at this point?
Thanks.

F20, XFCE : no X - xf86EnableIOPorts failed - FBIOBLANK Invalid
by sean darcy
I've just installed F20 on on an Acer Asprire, A8-7100, R5 Kaveri graphics.
startx runs, then exits the server.
My errors show /dev/dri/card0 no such file. Is this because the kernel
isn't loading the radeon module?
Xorg.0.log shows the radeon driver loaded:

digikam problem
by George Avrunin
I wrote to the digikam list about this a few days ago, but haven't gotten
any response, so I thought I'd check here before filing a bug.
On a fully updated Fedora 20, I've had the following problems importing
images from a Canon EOS SL1 since the update from digikam 3.5 to 4.0
(which I got July 26):
- The digikam camera window doesn't show thumbnails or previews, just icons
for RAW and/or JPEG. I can't seem to preview the images to select the
ones to import. Digikam does recognize the camera, it just won't show
thumbnails or previews of the images on the camera.
- Digikam gets the date from JPEGs to do renaming as I have specified, but
it seems to think that all of the RAW files were created on 1969-12-31
at 19:00:00, at least from the filenames it's generating. Once the files
are imported (I just import all of them without doing any selection), the
"File properties" shows the correct date. (Well, up to time zone issues:
my camera is set to Eastern Daylight Time, and Digikam seems to be
interpreting that as Universal Time and then correcting for my
computer's time zone, so things are off by 4 hours--but this was true
before the update, too. Is this a configuration problem on my part?)
- I have digikam set to create a new sub-album with the date; so I have
<root album>/<year>/<month>/<date>. I'm importing into the <month>.
JPEGs are correctly put in a sub-album with the date, but RAW images are
put into the <month>, not into a sub-album. I assume this is connected
to not being able to correctly get the date for the RAW images during the
import.
All of this (except for the time zone stuff) worked fine with 3.5. I
tried downloading the bodhi builds of digikam 4.2 for Fedora 20, but I'm
seeing the same issues as with 4.0. I looked through the digikam mailing
list archives and saw that some other people had problems with previewing
images from the camera with Canon cameras on 4.0, but the only response
was a claim that digikam was using gphoto2, with no details or follow-up.
(I can download the images from the gphoto2 command line, too. The
problem is not seeing thumbnails in the camera window to decide
what to download, or getting the dates on RAW images.) Shotwell seems to
be able to generate thumbnails of images in the camera before downloading
and gets the correct dates on RAW images.
I only started using digikam in early July, so it may well be that this is
pilot error, but I haven't been able to figure it out from the
documentation. I don't think I changed any digikam settings with the
upgrade from 3.5 to 4.0, and nothing about the camera changed at that
time.
Thanks for any help. If nobody's got a solution, should I file it on the
Fedora bugzilla, or upstream?
