IcedTeaPlugin
by Erik P. Olsen
After a recent fedora 20 update probably to google-chrome-stable the
IcedTeaPlugin was no longer a plugin. How do I get it back again? And where does
google-chrome load its plugins from?

Two failures after a recent Fedora 20 update...
by Michael H. Warfield
I'm kind of at a loss here. I recently (yesterday, May 12) updated my
Fedora 20 laptop (originally a fresh install of F20 a couple of months
ago, no update from previous rev). I had previously updated it on April
30, less that 2 weeks ago. Now two critical applications, liferea and
evolution, are failing catastrophically in a very similar manner.
For reference - I run XFCE with the Enlightenment 0.16 Window Manager.
I run 6 virtual desktops, each of which are 4 screen viewports wide by 3
high. Don't ask why, just understand they are need and used... I don't
think that's a factor. Gnome3 is not an option and it's abject lack of
performance (and viewports within desktops) would be prohibitive.
Both apps segfault and have OpenJDK messages just after the backtrace
and before the segfault message...
This is from evolution:
[mhw@canyon ~]$ evolution

Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[mhw@canyon ~]$
I get very similar results from liferea. Initial bitching seems to be
about Javascript and it ends with a java version, OpenJDK messages and a
segfault and core dump.
With Evolution, I got it to work for a while by removing all
of .local/share/evolution .cache/evolution and .config/evolution and
then restarting it. After many many hours of downloading my information
from my imap servers (I have several hundred folders and multiple
sites), it was running again. Next time I had to close it and restart,
it hurled chunks again. Screwed...
Liferea has been similar. It won't start with my old subscription list.
So, I eliminated .local/share/liferea .cache/liferea and .config/liferea
and and restarted. But... The moment I touch any subscription to look
at the articles, it crashes with an error very similar to what's above.
ForGetAboutIt when it comes to importing an old list.
None of Liferea, Evolution, or OpenJDK were updated between April 30 and
May 12.
A Bugzilla has been opened on the Liferea problem and the auto ABRT
report has been sent on Evolution. I'm having to resort to an (up to
date) tower that's running Fedora 19 and afraid to update it to Fedora
20 as this point.
Anyone have any idea what the hell has gone wrong here and what I might
do to work around it?
Regards,
Mike

Why doesn't Fedora 20 find my print server?
by Tim
For many years, now, I've run a CUPS server on my LAN, that any distro
of Linux I've switched on has managed to find the printers it publishes,
without me having to do any client configuration on the PC, other than
making sure the firewall isn't in the way.
The CUPS server advertises itself, the clients find it, automatically,
and when I want to print something, there's a list of available printers
that I can print to. This is how it's supposed to work.
Fedora 20, however, finds nothing. I don't want to have to go around
configuring all the clients, and all the user accounts on each of the
clients. That's a really dumb way of doing things, something that CUPS
and Linux used to manage to avoid.
Nor do I want to play silly buggers with Avahi. None of the printers
are UPnP/zeroconf thingummies, nor the print server.
What is wrong with the Fedora 20 CUPS client?

trying to clarify/distinguish the various ACPI-related packages
by Robert P. J. Day
bit of a beginner WRT to ACPI so i want to install the "appropriate"
packages on my fedora rawhide system to play with ACP, and there
appear to be a number of them:
$ yum search acpi
acpi.x86_64 : Command-line ACPI client
acpica-tools.x86_64 : ACPICA tools for the development and debug of ACPI tables
acpid.x86_64 : ACPI Event Daemon
acpid-sysvinit.x86_64 : ACPI Event Daemon
acpitool.x86_64 : Command line ACPI client
claws-mail-plugins-acpi-notifier.x86_64 : ACPI notification plugin for Claws Mail
libacpi.i686 : General purpose library for ACPI
libacpi.x86_64 : General purpose library for ACPI
libacpi-devel.i686 : Development files for libacpi
libacpi-devel.x86_64 : Development files for libacpi
wmacpi.x86_64 : Dockapp for laptop acpi/apm information
yacpi.x86_64 : Yet Another Configuration and Power Interface
$
currently, i can see the [acpi_thermal_pm] kernel thread running,
and i have *none* of the above packages installed. are some of these
packages obsoleted or superseded by some of the others? what is the
state of the art WRT ACPI in userspace? just trying to figure out
which packages are relevant and which aren't. thanks.
rday
p.s. i did find this web page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/AcpicaTools
which i am perusing right now.

clear DNS cache
by SternData
My system is set to go directly to the OpenDNS name servers for DNS
resolution. However, the results I get from "nslookup" differ from what
I get if I query the same name server from another machine with the same
resolv.conf settings.
That leads me to believe that DNS info is being cached locally
somewhere. I don't have bind or nscd installed.
Where is this caching taking place and how can I clear/flush it?

Very OT but I need help
by Roger
I do hope someone can help me here.
Running Fedora 20 fully updated. Installed JDK8 with netbeans this
evening. All good but when I select <New Project> the Categories section
has only 5 java selections, no HTML or PHP, nothing.
I have been googling for hours but there's nothing of any help.
Does anyone out there actually use JDK and netbeans and if so can you
please help with correcting this as I need to help develop a
HTML5/CSS3/AngularJS application.
thank you in advance

Sound not working on 3.12.x and 3.13.x kernels for Fedora 20
by dwoody1
I installed F20 shortly after it's release. Everything worked as expected.
All kernels released since then have resulted in the sound not working.
The kernel that works is 3.11.10-301.fc20.i686+PAE. Sound does not work
for the 3.12.x and 3.13.x kernels.
I have searched for a solution for this and found several
recommendations but none worked for me.
I have compared a listing of the modules (lsmod) from the working kernel
and non-working kennel and both lists have the same sound modules loaded
(there is a size difference in some of the modules, but I expected that).
I have compared the output from amixer for both working and non-working
kernels and they are exactly the same.
The sound related packages that are installed are:
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-4.0-13.gitf81e3.fc20.i686
alsa-tools-firmware-1.0.27-3.fc20.i686
alsa-utils-1.0.27.2-4.fc20.i686
alsamixergui-0.9.0-0.16.rc2.fc20.i686
alsa-lib-1.0.27.2-2.fc20.i686
pulseaudio-libs-4.0-13.gitf81e3.fc20.i686
alsa-firmware-1.0.27-2.fc20.noarch
I am not very knowledgeable about sound. I am sure I need to check other
configuration settings but I do not know which files are relevant.
Any help will be appreciated,
David

Laser printer density -
by Bob Goodwin
I have two Brother laser printers. Not surprisingly the newer one
(HL-2170w) prints a test page somewhat darker than the old HL-5140 even
with new toner and drum cartridges.
Printing a test page from either one shows the Density set to 0. I
assume that setting the density higher puts more toner on the paper and
produces darker text however I am unable to find how to change the
density setting. There is an item for Density under Print > Advanced, as
well as Brightness and Contrast, but they have no perceptible effect
that I can see. The printer works as it is but I think it could be better.
Has anyone any thoughts on where to change this? There must be a
configuration file somewhere ...
Thanks,
Bob

screen resolution weird
by Rafnews
Hi,
i installed an old laptop for my 3 years old son as in school they
already learn how to do simple things with computer 9painting, watching
cartoons, and so on...)
my problem is the following one:
After my son logs in F20 KDE, it's like all icons on the desktop are
zoomed in.
when i move the mouse i can see that mouse pointer goes far far far
below the bottom part of the monitor...so it's like the screen
resolution is set up for people having problem seeing well....
even if i have the bottom bar with the icons and menus i can not reach
it very well as mouse pointer must go "outside" monitor viewport to
reach it and it is really bad thing.
If i log with my account, everything is ok, so i believe it's a simple
issue but i must confess i don't know where can i check or reinit the
gnome desktop to default (without losing son's game icons on desktop)
Any idea would be helpful.
thx.

Sending email to my local server
by Timothy Murphy
I'm trying to send email from my Fedora-20/KDE laptop "rose"
to my CentOS-6.5 local home server "grover"
(in order to run a SpamAssassin test),
but I am finding this surprisingly difficult.
I've tried with KMail and mail,
sending email to "tim@grover", "tim(a)grover.localdomain",
and various other combinations, but all fail with "recipient rejected".
And telnet gives
[tim@rose ~]$ telnet 192.168.2.5 25
Trying 192.168.2.5...
telnet: connect to address 192.168.2.5: Connection refused
Is there a setting I could change, or is the exercise hopeless?
