Need advice
by Rachmayanto Surjadi
Hi all:
We are developing internal software using MySql dB and are planning to use
Fedora for the server.
The question is how do we know that this hardware (motherboard, CPU) really
support Fedora version 18 or 19? We are looking at mobo from Asus or Intel
or Gigabyte, but did not find firm answer. We did not find the info from
mobo websites either.
The mobo that got our interest are the ones with H77 or Z77 or H87 chipsets.
Is there any URL for me to get the information we need?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Rachma

Fresh Install of F20 failed to install bootloader
by Arthur Dent
I have finally found the time to upgrade my desktop machine from (ahem)
F16 to F20.
It is my habit to have 2xOS partitions, 1 partition for /home and 1 for
swap. Each time I upgrade I actually do a clean install in the
last-but-one OS partition (i.e. in this case where the F15 had
previously been) leaving the current (i.e. in this case F16) untouched.
This way I can simply mount the previous install and copy across any
configs etc.
I used a (tested) F20 64bit full install DVD (not the live disk).
I could make neither head nor tail of the new anaconda partitioning
system (and I still don't know if I will have successfully pointed the
F20 install to the existing /home partition - I know it seemed to insist
on creating it's own /swap even though there is a partition dedicated to
that and formatted as such for the existing F16 install).
Anyway the first attempt failed completely - locking at the screen where
you have to create a root password and user.
The second attempt seemed to go through OK, installing all the packages
etc. but I had to take a phone call at the point where it said it was
doing "post-installation configuration". By the time I came back, the
screen was informing me that Fedora 20 had been successfully installed -
reboot to start using it.
The reboot put me back into my old F16 install (at least I know that
hasn't been screwed up!) with the grub menu offering me only varying
kernels from F16.
It seems F20 has not installed the bootloader properly.
What are the steps for getting F20 to boot (while, if possible still
giving me the option to boot into F16)?
Thanks

Graphical tool that sets hostname
by Chris Kottaridis
I installed Fedora 19 and the machine gets IP address from DHCP and
comes up with a hostname of:
$ hostname
unknownF46D04B04638
I'd like to set the hostname to match the DNS name that goes with the
Address it's getting assigned.
I believe I could use:
$ hostnamectl --static myhost
will set the hostname to myhost.
However, is there a graphical admin tool that will do it ?
In older releases network manager had an option to set the hostname, but
doesn't seem to now.
Thanks

Five Things in Fedora This Week (2014-04-22)
by Matthew Miller
Reposted from

Fedora is a big project, and it’s hard to follow it all. This series
highlights interesting happenings in five different areas every week.
It isn’t comprehensive news coverage — just quick summaries with links
to each. Here are the five things for April 22nd, 2014:
Making it easier to join Fedora
-------------------------------
The Fedora Join SIG is our special interest group dedicated to
improving the experience for new contributors. It’s been dormant for a
while, but it’s back with a bang thanks to Ankur Sinha, Amita Sharma,
Sarup Banskota, and others. A recent IRC meeting came up with a
couple of immediate ideas, including a Fedora site inspired by What can
I do for Mozilla?
If making Fedora more welcoming is interesting to you, join the mailing
list and help keep up the momentum.

Fedora Docs “Beats”
-------------------
Speaking of things you can do for Fedora… how about contributing
expertise in your area for the Fedora 21 release notes? I know F21′s
October release target seems a long way off, but there’s a lot to do
and the summer is going to fly by. Docs team leader Pete Travis
recently announced that F21 Beats are Open, noting:
> If you’re new to Docs, Beat writing is a good way to get
> started. Simply choose a package, service, or functionality
> that interests you and do a little research to see how will
> change in F21. You can check rawhide package changelogs, read
> the software changelogs in /usr/share/doc/$pkgname, scrape
> upstream mailing lists and commit logs, and /reach out to
> package maintainers or developers.
As always, Pete also provides great, non-intimidating guidance for new
docs contributors.

Fedora Workstation, and an alternate view — both part of Fedora!
----------------------------------------------------------------
Fedora Workstation developer Christian Schaller wrote a long blog post
explaining some of the mindset and background behind the upcoming
Fedora Workstation. If you care about Linux on the desktop, this is an
interesting read, whether you’re a GNOME fan or not (and whether or not
you agree). And if you *do* disagree, remember that that’s absolutely
okay too. Longtime Fedora contributor Stephen Smoogen (a self-described
“411 year old Linux administrator”) has a great blog post responding to
one particular Fedora Workstation decision and why he’s not worried.
Our “Fedora.next” efforts are additive rather than restrictive, and are
centered around our Friends Foundation; we may disagree on details, but
we can all work together to advance free software as a project.

Fedora Atomic?
--------------
At last week’s Red Hat Summit, Red Hat announced
a new initiative called Project Atomic. This isn’t really new
software, or a new operating system or distribution — it’s best
described as a pattern for putting together some pieces we already have.
Not surprisingly, a lot of these pieces were (and are) worked on by
Fedora contributors, including rpm-ostree, Docker, systemd,
and a new orchestration building-block called GearD (you can read
more about GearD on the OpenShift blog and of course you can
`yum install geard` to check it out).
So… (you may be thinking…) how does this fit into Fedora? Well, most of
these are parts that we have already been talking about in the Fedora
Cloud Working Group, and it may be that GearD provides one of the key
missing pieces. We’ve filed a Fedora 21 change proposal for a
specially-tailored Docker Host Image, and although we haven’t made any
decisions yet, it - looks like the Atomic patterns are very well
aligned with what we want to do (and overlap with what we are already
doing anyway), so that may end up being our “Fedora Atomic” cloud spin.
One of the pieces of Project Atomic that the Cloud WG *hadn’t* looked
at is Cockpit, a web-based server management GUI. The interesting thing
is that this is one of the key features proposed for Fedora Server, and
if we decide to include that part in our Docker cloud image, that will
be a point of coherence across the products. (See the Project Atomic
docs on what that might provide.)

Automatic Weekly Data!
----------------------
If I had been paying attention and knew about
<http://thisweekinfedora.org/> before I started doing these posts, I
might have named *this* something a bit less similar. Oh well! Names
aside, though, these articles and that site are actually complementary.
I pick out things to feature as they strike my attention, while This
Week in Fedora presents automatically-collected statistics every
Monday. You won’t really learn any *news*there, but you will find data
on all sorts of contributor activities, from package builds to user
creation to meetings logged. If you’re data-oriented, it’s an
interesting way to get a feel for the technical pulse of the community.

Problem with sound and Firefox
by don fisher
When I boot my system I can play music etc. using Rhythmnbox. I also can
use the volume control. After running Firefox, the pulse application is
gone (pulseaudio --check returns a 1) and I am not able to restart it.
But the audio from firefox which must not be using pulse still works
fine. Sorry, but I am forced to run an old version of the kernel
(version 3.1.0-7.fc16.x86_64) to get video to work in my Dell 1721
laptop with a Radeon video card.
The message in /var/log/messages is:

I find the segfault is rough to decode form the core dump. Is there
something special I need to set up to prevent firefox from killing pulse?
Please have mercy. It has been a couple of years since I posted.

Q about firefox version numbers
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
Does anybody know what the corelation between fedora package version
numbers and mozilla version numbers?
e.g. While looking into CSS3 compatibility everybody refers to
firefox-3.x; but fedora firefox->about reports firefox 26.0.
Hard to imagine fedora is 23 major versions ahead of mozilla's major
version.
Any insight?
Thanks

Dual Boot Problems
by Dave Cross
A few months ago I installed Fedora 20 as dual boot on a new Dell
desktop - one with UEFI. But I got confused while installing it and
set the BIOS to "legacy boot mode" before the installation.
As a result, I have a PC which boots to Grub and Fedora works fine.
However I can't get to the Windows 8 installation and if I switch back
to UEFI boot mode, then the system won't boot at all. This works fine
for me most of the time, but occasionally I want to run Windows on the
system. So I'd like to fix my errors and end up with a real dual-boot
system.
As I see it, my plan should be something like this:
1/ Back up everything important from the Linux partitions.
2/ Use the Windows restore CD to repair the Windows UEFI boot.
3/ Reinstall Fedora using UEFI boot instead of legacy.
I'm hoping that if I note the partitions and directories before I
start, then I'll be able to re-use the same partitions for the same
directories as I currently have. Only my system partition will have
changed and I'll need to reinstall some RPMs.
Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Is there anything I might be
able to do which will make it easier?
Oh, and the system has an SSD which it uses for booting Windows. Is
there any chance that I install Fedora so that it uses this (but
without disturbing the Windows boot files)?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave...
