WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi,
On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after
booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my
wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks
displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog
messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared.
Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome.
Thanks
Mike

losing WiFi Access - prompted for password
by SternData
F18...
Over the last few days, I'm getting prompted to re-enter my password for
my WiFi network. It's not the router because no other device on the
network seems to be having problems.
Potential changes on my system include

network-manager-applet-0.9.8.1-4.git20130514.fc18.x86_64
Given that this has really started the day before yesterday, I suspect
it has something to do with the NetworkManager update. Is anyone else
having this problem?
(Please -- do not tell me to "dump the evil NetworkManager". I'm trying
to solve a problem here, not make some stand against the tide. Thanks.)

All-in-one laser printer recommendation
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I'm on the lookout for a reliable all-in-one mono laser printer to use
under Fedora. Must be networked, preferably wireless, and both print
and scan functions must be supported with standard tools (CUPS etc.)
The Samsung Xpress M2070W looks like a good all-rounder but I'm
unsure about Linux support. Google seems to show a variety of
opinions.
Anyone have one of these beasties, or have an alternative to recommend?

640x480 only res available after f14 - f20 upgrade?
by Morgan Read
Hello Folks
I've upgraded a server to f20 that was running f14. There was no issue
with screen geometry/ resolution in f14, but now the only resolution
available via gnome is 640x480. That makes the machine virtually
impossible to use in a graphic environment.
I've followed these links here:
*
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/8301/how-do-i-change-my-monitor...
* https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr#Adding_undetected_resolutions
* http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1584620
But, all to no avail...
I'd really appreciate anybody pointing me in the right direction(s) - I
suspect I've just not done something really straight forward as it seems
very strange that this old HP ProLiant ML 150 and equally old Dell
1703FP monitor combo which worked fine under f14 now doesn't under f20.
Here's some info from the Xorg log, from my 'no knowledge' assessment,
perhaps:
[ 22.239] (II) modesetting(0): Output VGA-0 using initial mode
640x480 +0+0
Is the most meaningful line?
Many thanks,
Morgan.

Fedora Present and Future: a Fedora.next 2014 Update (Part I, “Why?”)
by Matthew Miller
I promised a while ago that I would provide a text version of my talk at
DevConf, for people who couldn't make it and because sitting through a video
of me standing up there going on and on doesn't really make for good
followup discussion.
Because it grew rather long, I think it works best as a web article, which
you can find on Fedora Magazine at <http://fedoramagazine.org/?p=1236>.
Also because of the length, I'm posting it installments. This part is the
background, next part is some of the things we are doing, followed by the
panel discussion, followed by Q&A. Whew; that's a lot.
I can post the text here if people think it'd be really helpful to do so,
(although I'm inclined to think that would be unwieldy), and in any case I
will take questions, comments, complaints, in any media including replies
here, on the article, on the social media, or at any bar or coffee shop
within walking distance of Boston's MBTA.

brother mfc-j5910DW support?
by Aleksandar Kostadinov
Hello,
I was wondering if anybody used this device with fedora 20? I'm
considering to buy one. I see some drivers on brother web site but seems
somehow old. I'd like to print and scan over wifi.
Thank you!

FC20 and (":No such file or directory)
by Gregory P. Ennis
Everyone,
I have created a new F20 install on a Toshiba laptop this afternoon, and
everything has gone well until I tried to set the laptop up for our
system with some perl scripts.
Some of the perl scripts worked fine, but one script would not activate
and resulted in a command line error message of :
(": No such file or directory)
I added the parenthesis, but the initial single quote is part of the
message. I have evaluated the perl script and have run it on other
machines without difficulty.
I finally got the script to work by adding a -w switch to the first line
in the form of :
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
I am posting this to record the problem and solution for others.

Fedora Scrolling Lag
by c. marlow
Fresh Install of Fedora 20 installed last night.
When browsing Facebook and I use the mouse wheel to scroll down, Firefox
pauses before it jumps down ( meaning it pauses for a few sec before it
finally gets the command that I scrolled down and the page finally goes
down)
I am using Fedora 20 Mate
2 gigs of ram
custom built pc
250 gig Hardrive
Installed last night full format since I was coming from Kubuntu
Only programs open Evolution and Firefox
Memory Usage currently: 357.2 MB ( 17.7 % )
Swap: 0 of 2 gigs
fully updated last night ( and fresh update of 384 patches was
slowwwwwwwwwww I had to let it run overnight on my 12 down 1 up sat
connection)
Thanks,
Christopher

Fedora and Garamond (LaTeX) fonts
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I have been trying my luck at using Garamond fonts in LaTeX with
Fedora. From the repo, I found
texlive-ebgaramond-svn30741.0.15__2013_05_22_-4.fc20.noarch
and installed it. I got LaTeX to compile my document, however, I am
unable to get the boldface fonts. Not sure why this is, so can someone
suggest how I can get boldface fonts to work.
According to this website (which uses garamond as opposed to
ebgaramond fonts), I should be able to get it to work. (I wonder what
the difference between the garamond and ebgaramond packages are, if
any.)
http://gael-varoquaux.info/computers/garamond/index.html
Can anyone please help with what I am missing?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan
