[F20] Font rendering problem in PDF obtained with dvipdf and dvipdfm
by Marco Guazzone
Hello,
I have a font rendering problem after transforming a DVI file into a PDF
file by means of dvipdf or dvipdfm.
The DVI file is created by means of latex from the following 'test.tex'
file:
---[test.tex]---
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
\section{A Section}
See Figure \ref{fig}.
\begin{figure}
\centering
\includegraphics[scale=.80]{test.eps}
\caption{A figure}\label{fig}
\end{figure}
\end{document}
---[/test.tex]
where the EPS figure 'test.eps' is generated by means of R from the
following 'test.R' file:
---[test.R]---
x <- -4:4
y <- x^2
setEPS()
postscript(paste("chart.eps",sep=""),height=4,width=6)
plot(x,y, type="b", xlab=expression(paste(Delta, t)),
ylab=expression(paste(Delta, t)^2))
grid()
dev.off()
---[/test.R]---
The font rendering problem is in the PDF rendering of the EPS figure, where
in place of the greek symbol "Delta" I get a crossed circle.
Note that the rendering problem does not affect the DVI file, but only the
PDF file resulting from converting the DVI with dvipdf or dvipdfm.
I don't know why this happen.
Any idea on how to fix it?
Thanks!
Best,

Fedora 20 Broken Dependencies

Hello there
I've done the usual search around the net and can't find a good answer
to this one. Can anyone help ? When trying to run 'yum update' I get
broken dependencies...
Skipped (dependency problems):

I have tried ... ' yum --disablerepo=rpmfusion-free-updates --skip-

Slightly OT
by Roger
HI all
Apologies for ubuntu request but has anyone ever managed to successfully
install and use Angularjs and Slim or Laravel the PHP frameworks on
Ubuntu 13.04 or 13.10.
I'm on the point of frustration because I find no detailed info/tut on
installing Angularjs that actually works.
Same with the other two.
I tried npm install angular but get a mind numbing variety of errors. I
have angular js downloaded into my /Downloads but can find no
instruction on where or how to install it.
Frankly I dislike having to use PHP and Angular but it is the only
choice at this time.
Hoping for some pointers and help
thanks in advance
Roger

man command question
by Joachim Backes
Hi all,
I'm running F20 on gnome3 desktop,
and I see some weird effect in the man command (entered in a gnome
terminal) if using the "-P" command option:
man -P cat man >/dev/null
should use the cat command as pager. I get the expected effect, but one
or more additional messages to stderr:
<standard input>:981: warning [p 7, 5.8i, div `3tbd1,0', 0.0i]: cannot
adjust line
<standard input>:990: warning [p 7, 5.8i, div `3tbd4,0', 0.0i]: cannot
adjust line
Anybody knows what this means? No such message if the gnome terminal is
wide enough.
Kind regards
Joachim Backes

F19 Kernel Upgrade/Install Failure - kernel-3.13.5-103.fc19.x86_64
by Brian Hanks
I'm again having issues installing a kernel upgrade for my F19 system.
I've actually seen this several times in recent months on both my F19
and F20 systems. The RPM script seems to fail on the mkinitrd portion.
The rpm transaction hangs. After a long wait, I kill it and get the
following error:
mkinitrd failed
warning: %posttrans(kernel-3.13.5-103.fc19.x86_64) scriptlet failed,
exit status 1
Non-fatal POSTTRANS scriptlet failure in rpm package
kernel-3.13.5-103.fc19.x86_64
Has anyone else seen this? Any idea why suddenly after all of these
years kernel upgrades aren't reliable?
Thanks,
Brian

Fedora 19 problem
by Roger
Hi all.
Last night Fedora 19 updated 189 files, akmod and kernel among them.
Now Fedora boot stops, I think because the kernel-devel file is faulty
and nvidia cannot compile, or maybe partially compiled.
I have tried reverting to earlier kernels and down loading the devel for
that but yum reports that everything is up to date and stops.
I see there's a lot of problems with Fedora 20 so have not tried
updating that yet.
What's the best way to resolve this please and get Fedora 19 nvidia gui
working again.
Thanks in advance
Roger.

flux
by Paul Cartwright
anyone know of an app like this for fedora?? I loved this when I ran
Debian..
http://justgetflux.com/linux.html
f.lux
f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to
the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your
computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you
could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.
