Fedora 21: Cannot scan to EPSON WF-2540
by Jim Lewis
Hello all,
I can't scan to my Epson WF-2540 printer/scanner. About 1 nanosecond
after running skanlite a dialog box comes up saying no devices were
found. Of course it prints fine. This printer is shown as compatible for
both printing and scanning on the Linux Foundation site (where I got the
driver for it).
I have tried this so far:
- turned off firewalld
- ran tcpdump between the computer and printer, then ran skanlite again.
There is no indication that there was ever any communication between them.
- ran skanlite with strace. Lot's of output (duh) but no smoking gun that
I could see.
My old Fedora 14 system can find the scanner just fine, and you can see
the network traffic pretty clearly. If anyone has any ideas I would sure
like to hear them.

Function keys vs Fn+Function keys F20 on HP Envy
by Gary Stainburn
Hi folks,
I'm still not 100% happy with my new laptop - I still can't get WIFI to be
reliable.
However, my biggest bug bear is the functions keys. I use gvim extensively and
I use the function keys extensively within gvim.
On my new HP Envy as with many new laptops they've reversed the effect of the
Fn key. Now if I press F2 or F3 it dims and brightens my screen. To save my
work or swap panes I have to press Fn+F2 or Fn+F3
Is there any way that I can undo this change and go back to the good old days?
I'm using KDE on F20

Plymouth Boot Splash Screen Doesn't Work in F21
by Stephen Morris
I had plymouth configured to use the solar theme in F20 and when I used
Fedup to upgrade to F21 plymouth did not retain the theme specification.
I used command plymouth-set-default-theme solar --rebuild-initrd to set
the theme back to what I want but this has not worked. The command did
build initrd-plymouth.img in /boot and changed
/etc/plymouth/plymouthd.conf to specify solar as the theme instead of
fadein, but at boot time plymouth still appears to be using fadein as
the theme. I did find that in F20 plymouth-set-default-theme did not set
things up properly and I think I had to run dracut to rebuild the initrd
for the theme to work for every upgraded kernel, but I can't remember.
Does anyone know what I need to do besides issuing the
plymouth-set-default-theme command to get plymouth to use the theme I want?

Steve

Problem with AMD FirePro v4900 after today's kernel update
by thomas cameron

Howdy -
I updated my desktop today, and got kernel-3.17.7-300.fc21.x86_64.
When I rebooted, my screens (three of them) were completely blank and
the monitors went into power saver mode. Text console was there when I
hit ctrl+alt+F2, but X was not there on console 1.
I booted into the older kernel, kernel-3.17.6-300.fc21.x86_64, and I
got a graphical login again. Anyone else seen this?
I am running three monitors, connected to a AMD FirePro v4900 - two
DisplayPort and one DVI, if that matters.

running a join.me meeting
by Robert Moskowitz
Has anyone here used join.me on Fedora?
As a participant it is no problem. But to manage the meeting, there is
a windows exe that gets downloaded.
I had to quickly switch to a windows system for a meeting I had to run
today. Has anyone tried this? Does this exe work in WINE?

Findung out that would be beyond my scope, so, again, filing a bug upstream will be my next step.

SLiM dependency on xterm?
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
Just wondering why installing the rpm for SLiM depends on xterm? Should it not be stripped of this dependency?
Many thanks,
Ranjan

firewall-config has many broken dependencies.
by Sam Varshavchik
I upgraded a headless F20 box to F21's server product.
xorg-x11-xauth is installed, in order to make X forwarding work over the ssh
connection.
After installing the firewall-config rpm manually, it's obvious that many of
its dependencies are missing.
I was able to figure out that some of the default font packages that must be
installed.
However, firewall-config still comes up with some of its display widgets
obviously not getting rendered correctly, and they do not respond to mouse
clicks or the keyboard.
I posted a screenshot comparison between a working firewall-config, and
broken one in bug 1176331.
Anyone has any idea what dependency can result in such a broken display?

Gnome & Yumex : Is there a way ...
by Beartooth
I'm busily weighing Mate and xfce4 against my uses; with luck, I
may eventually need only a rock-bottom few Gnome apps. Is there any way
to eliminate the rest of Gnome by the shovelful instead of one app at a
time with Yumex?
