OT: bridging firewall for Comcast static IPv4 addresses
by Robert Moskowitz
Comcast has a business offering with '13' static IPv4 addresses. But if
you get this, you MUST use their router.
They will soon also be providing a /54 IPv6 static allocation along side
this.
I don't want to rely on their box for firewall rules, so I want to put
my own box behind theirs. But can't very well route to an internal
firewall a /28 v4 block. I would have to run a briding firewall.
Anyone know of bridging firewall functionality to add to Fedora? Or
something else?
I currently have a /26 v4 allocation which I route all over inside my
network, but my ISP is only DSL and it is sssllloowww.

Fedora and HP Pavillion11 x360 notebook
by Fernando Lozano
Hi there,
In need of a cheap and very portable notebook, but able to run a few
VMs, i got a HP Pavillion11 x360. Can't go wrong with a "standard"
Celeron machine, right? ;-) Hope anyone else has tried that machine and
can give me hints. If not, I'll start digging to try to provide useful
bug reports.
Started using the F20 Live CD, ends ups to a blank (actually dark)
screen. Caps lock doesn't light up, Ctrl+Alt+FX won't work, I guess it's
frozen.
Got the F21 Beta live CD and it works fine! After all, with little over
a week for final release, it should be quite stable. Screen resolution
correct, sound, wireless, touch screen... mounted the windows C:
partition and installed Minecraft there (I have kids), very playable. So
I installed F21Beta to the hard drive (not worried if it ended up
erasing Windows 8, but it didn't).
After installing needed apps (LibreOffice, Gimp, Skype) followed by yum
update and reboot problems started: frozen during boot -- almost at
finish, the progress image almost full. Hopefully selecting the older
kernel the system boots... most of the time.
How can I find where exactly boot is frozen?
WiFi became unstable -- I don't understand why, it looked fine at first,
downloading updates with no problem. Tried disabling the internal wifi
card (reviews on the net says it's crap) and using a usb dongle. A tenda
one showed no improvement (but never failed me under F19) and a linksys
one looked better, but I still had a few disconnects. Another machine
using F19 was using wifi fine at the same time, besides many android
devices, so it doesn't looks like Internet link or AP problems.
The trackpad cant detect taps (clicks). I never liked trackpads, always
use an external wireless mouse, but it would be nice having the trackpad
working.
Finally shutdown doesn't turns the computer of. It drops to the text
screen showing "powering off" but I have to keep pressed the on/off
button to actually power it of.
I'm spoiled, used to have no hardware problems with Fedora over the
latest few years... :-)

Configuring a printer on a server without a GUI
by Robert Moskowitz
I have a server here that has no GUI installed.
No gnome, xfce, or any other. And I want to install a printer. It is
an HP8610 and I have the url for it. I strangely thought that
system-config-printer would work, but that also requires more than just
a text window as I get:
# system-config-printer
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
(system-config-printer.py:15388): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
Oh, yes, no monitor at ALL. Only a serial console or SSH terminal.

5tFTW: Fedora 21 release on track, new leadership and thanks to the old; counting users; more... (2014-12-02)
by Matthew Miller
Reposted from <http://fedoramagazine.org/5tftw-2014-12-02/>.
Fedora is a big project, and it’s hard to keep up with everything that
goes on. This series highlights interesting happenings in five
different areas every week. It isn’t comprehensive news coverage — just
quick summaries with links to each. Here are the five things for
December 2nd, 2014:
Fedora 21 on track for Dec. 9!
------------------------------
Things are looking good for our scheduled December 9th release. We’re
in the process of validating release candidates, and everything seems
in great shape. (And it's not too late to join in: see the announcement
on the test list if you're interested in helping.) Assuming no
unexpected showstoppers, we’ll approve this as official at the Thursday
“Go / No-Go” meeting, and then it’ll be off to the mirror network for
release next Tuesday morning!

Presenting the New Fedora Council
---------------------------------
With the conclusion of the first round of elections, the new Fedora
Council is in place! If you’ve missed it (perhaps you’re just coming by
to see what’s up with the new Fedora 21 release and this happened while
you weren’t watching), read up on it on the Fedora Council wiki
page.
Five of the six full-vote members are in place:
- **Elected Representative:** Rex Dieter
- **Elected Representative:** Langdon White
- **Engineering Representative:** Josh Boyer
- **Outreach Representative:** Christoph Wickert
- **Fedora Project Leader:** Matthew Miller
The sixth seat is the **Fedora Community Action and Impact
Coordinator**, which will be a full-time position hired and funded by
Red Hat’s Open Source and Standards group. (More on this job opening
here:
* http://fedoramagazine.org/fedora-community-action-and-impact-job-opening-...
The council also includes a number of *auxiliary seats*. As the Council
charter explains:
> They are intended to have significant positive impact on the project
> as a whole, but in order to minimize the overall influence of
> appointed positions vs. those selected by the community, their votes
> in the consensus process are expected to be related to the scope of
> the respective role.
One of these is the **Fedora Program Manager** — Jaroslav Resnik.
Another is the **Diversity Advisor**, a position for which we will be
appointing a search committee shortly. And finally, the Council will
select **Objective Leads** — more on that on my previous Fedora
Magazine post about project objectives.

Thanks to the Outgoing Board
----------------------------
I want to offer a huge personal and also official thank you to all
previous members of the Fedora Project Board, whose care and dedication
have been instrumental in guiding Fedora to where we are today.
And I particularly want to thank the most recent board members —
Christoph Wickert, Garret Holmstrom, John Rose, Matthew Garrett, Eric
Chrstensen, Josh Boyer, Haïkel Guémar, and Neville Cross — and all
other project contributors who provided ideas, feedback, wisdom, and
significant effort in constructing the new governance model.
Fedora EMEA Gets Ready for F21
------------------------------
Jiří Eischmann has a blog post about getting the physical manifestation
of the Fedora release ready for the Europe / Middle East / Africa
region.
> I’ve been using Fedora 21 on my home computer since alpha, so it’s
> really nothing new for me, but I’m really excited about the release.
> In my opinion, it will be the most significant release since Fedora 7
> when Core and Extras got merged. It’s also been the most stable
> release of Fedora I’ve used.
>
> While Fedora QA guys are working on the final polishing as that F21
> can meet the final criteria, ambassadors are getting ready for the
> release. [...]
In addition to background notes about stickers, Jiří includes a preview
of the awesome F21 DVD sleeves designed by Alexander Smirnov (a.k.a.
“inkscaper”).

How many users does Fedora have?
--------------------------------
Alec Leamas started an interesting discussion on the Fedora Devel list,
asking, “How many users does Fedora have?“. The answer is… we don’t
really know. This is notoriously hard to count, and Fedora has always
opted for more privacy-preserving options, something many in our
contributor community care very strongly about. Stephen Smoogen is
working on coming up with some graphs based on mirror traffic, but
that’s only part of the picture, and an imperfect one.
Finding useful metrics for progress towards project goals and then
iteratively acting to improve them is a powerful tool for making sure
that our effort goes towards what we want to do [*] in the most
effective way. Ben Cotton started a sub-thread about _asking the right
questions_, which reminded me of ticket #1 for the Fedora Council
(copied over from previous work by the Board). Let’s keep this
discussion going. (And, one more plug here… helping get these metrics
right is part of the job responsibilities of the future Community
Action and Impact position.)
* This topic is probably better for the Fedora Council Discuss
mailing list, (renamed from board-discuss and, before that,
advisory-board), since it’s not strictly about Fedora development,
but, eh, not everyone is aware of that list. Next time! :)

This is both my backup drive and where my repos are located. So given
this is the time of the 'big sales' is this drive failing and it is time
to buy a replacement?

GRUB setup (after using clonezilla)
by Angelo Moreschini
Hi,
I tried Clonezilla.
I made an image-backup of the disk where Fedora is installed, and after I
restored, on the same disk, the image that I backuped .
Actually, when I boot the disk where there is the restored image,at the
begin I get the prompt of the GRUB .
I know that I didn't use Clonezilla in correct mode (probabilly I could
backup the disck with better option to include the GRUB installation) .
But in this moment I woud like to make setup of GRUB (from the command
line) for booting Fedora.
Can I have some suggestions how to do it?
>From the prompt of GRUB I wrote this command line:
and I got this output:
-------------------
GRUB > ls -l
device proc: filesystem type procfs sector size 512 total size 0KiB
device hd0: no know filesystem detected sector size 512 B total size .......
partition hd0, msdos2: no know filesystem detected partion start at

partition hd0, msdos1: filesystem type ext* last mod ..partion start
at .. tot sz
device hd1: no know filesystem detected sector size 512 B total size .......
partition hd1, msdos1: filesystem type ext* label try_clonezilla last
mod. ...partion start at .. tot sz
--------------------
Thenk you

Pleasant experience with yumex on F21 beta
by Robert Moskowitz
Maybe because I am using Xfce instead of Gnome, but I doubt it.
First on startup, it does not go off and read the packages for update,
eventhough this is diabled. Just a bad behaviour on F20.
But it is just fast now. In the past I only used yumex when I really
needed to search for something. I may be more inclined to use it now.

A gmane mystery
by Timothy Murphy
I've been collecting redhat.fedora from gmane for several years,
but about a week ago I found that while I could read gmane newsgroups
I was unable to post to them - that is, my posts did not appear.
I was able to post to gmane.test, and could read these posts.
So I assume there is no problem with my From: or other headers.
I'm not sure if the gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general is in fact
"mirroring" this mailing list?
And if so, whether the problem lies with the list
rather than the newsgroup?
I seem to be properly subscribed to the mailing list,
with my current email address.
Any enlightenment or advice gratefully received.
