gnutls, openssl and compiling mutt
by AV
Does it make any difference if mutt is compiled with '--with-gnutls'
enabled or with '--with-openssl' enabled.
Mutt (Fed20/21/Rawhide package) shows that '--with-gnutls' is used.
I ask because I have no problem connecting to my ISP Ziggo
with mutt when using Fedora.
With the following in .muttrc:
set ssl_starttls = yes
set smtp_url = "smtp://volovics@ziggo.nl@smtp.ziggo.nl:587
the TLS connection is established successfully and I am asked to
accept the certificate. Everything works OK from then on.
But this does not work on a MacBook Pro with OsX Yosemite.
I use the Homebrew mutt. This mutt is compiled with '--with-openssl',
linked to 'openssl-1.0.1j'.
Using the same .muttrc file I use in fedora the TLS connection
'aborts' and I get the error message:
"SSL failed, I/O error. Could not negotiate TLS connection".
The openssl-1.0.1j from Homebrew seems to be the same as in
Fedora Rawhide though I have not checked all the patches.
(Of course mutt in Fedora is compiled with gcc and the Homebrew
mutt with LLVM Clang. Ziggo seems to be using TLSv1)

A Linux for the totally maintenance free
by JD
Have a friend who wants to try getting away from windows, which,
in spite of all the AV software the vendor had installed on her
windows 7, it was plagued by viruses that rendered it unusable.
So, since she is not technically savvy, I was thinking of finding a linux
distro that is practically self maintaining, as she has zero tech savvy for
doing things like updates, configurations, fililing abrt reports, .....etc.
Any ideas what linux to use for such a person?
Thanx.

Driver for RTL8192su chipset
by JD
Hi I have a usb wifi dongle which uses the
RTL8192su chipset.
I found the following drivers in the current kernel:
$ find
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi
-name \*.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8723com/rtl8723-common.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8723be/rtl8723be.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192cu/rtl8192cu.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192de/rtl8192de.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192ce/rtl8192ce.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl_usb.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8188ee/rtl8188ee.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtlwifi.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192se/rtl8192se.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192c/rtl8192c-common.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl_pci.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/btcoexist/btcoexist.ko
/usr/lib/modules/3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8723ae/rtl8723ae.ko
None of these drivers supports the RTL8192su chipset.
I found the URL:
https://github.com/chunkeey/rtl8192su
but they want you to use their git wireless kernel source to build the
driver:
"...Currently, only kernels built from the latest wireless-testing.git
are supported...."
The driver from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&L...
does not compile as it was made for a much older kernel.
Wondering is anyone has a working driver for fc20 for this chipset.
Thanx!

OpenGL crashes Radeon R7
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have just installed a Sapphire AMD Radeon R7 240 graphics card on my
desktop system, which runs OK except that invoking
Kinfocenter->Graphical Information->OpenGL
appears to crash the graphics driver. The symptom is that the session
restarts with a large number (8) of crash warnings reported by Drkonqi,
the KDE Crash Handler. None of these error messages seems to be very
informative, however here is part of the output of the 1st one:
Details:
Executable: akonadi_maildispatcher_agent PID: 4234 Signal:
Aborted (6) Time: 11/01/14 10:18:16 PM
The system is Fedora-20 with all upgrades running on a 4 CPU x86_64
system.
The graphics hardware identifies itself as:
$ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] Oland PRO [Radeon R7 240]
The video drivers are:
$ lsmod | grep radeon
radeon 1415819 3
i2c_algo_bit 13257 1 radeon
ttm 80807 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 58041 1 radeon
drm 291361 6 ttm,drm_kms_helper,radeon
i2c_core 55486 7
drm,i2c_piix4,drm_kms_helper,i2c_algo_bit,v4l2_common,radeon,videodev
Before I install the proprietary drivers from AMD, I'd like to see if
the open source drivers can be got to work. Any advice is welcome.
Thanks

smplayer nagware
by Tim
I thought I'd escaped from this sort of crap when I shifted to Linux,
all those years ago. I've just started up smplayer and got a pop-up
saying "you can support SMPlayer by sending a donation or sharing it
with your friends," with buttons to donate with paypal, and so something
with facebook or twitter.
