Fedora 19 installation fails at "installing bootloader"
by Emmett Culley
Yesterday I installed Fedora 19 on my workstation. I skipped Fedora 18 entirely as the installation GUI didn't give me any confidence I could do my usual thing.
My usual thing is to install each new version into different logical volumes than the current OS. In this case the current OS was installed in /dev/mapper/ws1-root1 as "/", /dev/mapper/ws1-var1 as "/var" and /dev/mapper/ws1-home as "/home". I reformatted (ext4) two logical volumes, /dev/mapper/ws1-root as "/" and /dev/mapper/ws1-var as "/var" from the previous OS (Fedora 16) before attempting to install Fedora 19 from an NFS share of the Fedora 19 ISO. I do not reformat or replace the home volume.
I chose to install KDE and most of the package groups (1722 files). The installation went along well as far as I know as I didn't stick around to watch, but when I returned to the machine it appeared to be stuck on "installing bootloader". I don't remember if it was "configuring" or "installing" the bootloader. I noted that the action indicator was not turning, but as I didn't know how long it had been doing that I gave it another hour or so.
In the end I had to physically reset the machine as it ignored the keyboard. I did that with a bit of trepidation, as I feared my system was not going to reboot. However it did boot, though into Fedora 17 (yeah), which is the best "failed" installation I ever experienced :-)
I can say for sure that this time I found the installation UI (anaconda?) not only easy to use, but pretty darn good looking as well. Of course, like many on this list I also found it to be less flexible when selecting what I want installed. Like you can choose only one desktop environment, and there doesn't appear any way to select other OS partitions at boot time, so I must assume that would have happened automatically. if it didn't fail.

Dual head breaks F19
by Bill Murray
Dear Fedora-fans,
I reported unstable results with dual head and F18.
I now
fedup'ed to F19 and things got worse. The login screen appears but
login attempts hang. By ssh from another machine I see:
[ 496.050] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
I can make it work. Unplug a monitor, log in, and re-plug it and dual
head works.
But this really isn't nice. Ideas anyone?
The corresponding line with only 1 head is:
[ 71.421] (II) intel(0): Creating default Display subsection in
Screen section
The full buggy log follows.
Thanks for any suggestions...
Bill

[Gnome 3.8] User list Not shown when switching between users
by Arthur Toussaint
Hello everybody,
I've recently upgraded to f19, and with gnome 3.8, i've seen a bug appearing,Sometimes, when I want to switch between users, the user list isn't shown. I mean, there are the dropdowns (Calendar, shutdown, etc), the mouse is also here and is functionnal, but the user list isn't here. These are the steps to reproduce on my machine : Log into user ASwitch to user BSwitch to user AAnd then, when I want to switch back to B, the user list doesn't appear. I've goggled a lot but I didn' t find anything, or only users who had their GDM crashing completely...And, a last thing, Before fedora, I had Archlinux, with gnome 3.8, and I had the same problemHope someone can help, If you need more information (Logs or anything like that) tell me on which file I have to look for informationsThanks in advance

I'm not sure if this is a real problem, or if it can be ignored. This
is obviously new to F19, but Groups like that have been common for a
long time. What exactly does this do when updating packages? And how
can I get rid of it or fix it?

F19 xfce bug or SL6 KVM bug?
by David G. Miller (aka DaveAtFraud)
Just installed F19 as a KVM guest with Scientific Linux 6.4 as the host OS.
Here's the oddity. The mouse cursor is invisible from the time the GUI
comes until I start a terminal window. I can login with no problems since
the login window gets focus on start up. I can make a reasonable guess at
how I need to move the mouse to get to the start terminal icon and click it.
Or I can move the mouse around until some other hot spot highlights and
click that. So far no other application has caused the cursor to reveal
itself. Once it's visible, it works fine.
Same behavior after install F19 from the Xfce spin image and after doing a
yum update. The cursor behaves normally when I boot from the spin iso. SL
6.4 host is "current" on updates.
Cheers,
Dave

F19 : what happened to gnome-panel?
by Jouk Jansen
Hi All,
I just tried to upgrade from F18 -> F19 (using fedup). After the upgrade I
seem to have lost gnome-panel. It does not work anymore and no package of
that name can be found.
For me GNOME3 is only workable because I have access to the "old" panel
which works at least as 10 times as efficient (in number of mouse
movements/clicks) as the "new" animated way.
Is there any chance that gnome-panel gets back?
Regards
Jouk
