F18: rescue EFI boot from rescue disk: cannot "modprobe efivars"
by Nick Urbanik
Dear Folks,
I tried to upgrade my Fedora 18 x86_64 on my Lenovo X121e laptop from
grub-efi to grub2-efi with a failure to boot. I followed the wiki
entry for Fedup, under "Updating GRUB".
From a rescue disk, I cannot run efibootmgr. The response is always,
"Fatal: Couldn't open either sysfs or procfs directories for accessing
EFI variables.
Try "modprobe efivars" as root"
Now this has no visible effect. I have been unable to run
efibootmgr. I would really appreciate some ideas on what I can do now
to boot this machine.

Splash screen for fc1[78] boot
by Bill Davidsen
Can someone point me to the proper documentation to use alternate splash screen
during boot? I want to use the solar theme from fc10, rather than the boring
default. My search seems to lead me to tidbits but not a "this is how it works"
document.

Finding a specific bug
by Joe Zeff
Just now, I tried to upgrade my desktop from F16 to F17 using
preupgrade. When I rebooted into the upgrade, it failed, and I had it
send a report off to bugzilla. It reported that it had found an
appropriate bug to add a comment to, but I didn't think to copy down the
number. Now, I can't find any record of the bug either in anaconda or
(not that I expected it) preupgrade. Checking the saved data in /root,
I found the phrase "device has not been created" and tried searching
using that, with no more luck. Is it just that I've not waited long
enough for it to show up, or what? Does anybody have a suggestion about
how to find this vanishing bug? If nothing else, I'd like to be able to
look at other comments and maybe find a way to work around it, but if I
can't locate it, I can't.

upgrade locked me out
by Martín Marqués
Last upgrade of F18 locked me out of my F18 server. Can't login, not
even as root.
Any ideas?
I remember polkit being in the upgrade.

Net install for F18 Crashes -- Can't remove CDROM
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have just downloaded Fedora-18-x86_64-netinst.iso and copied it to a
memory stick and also to a CDROM. Booting from the memory stick causes
the system to crash; it emits a message saying
Try dmesg | tail
dracut/ #
or something similar. The CDROM just drops back into a reboot, except
when run in VGA mode, when it behaves like the memory stick.
Now the CDROM can't be removed because it has been opened by
nepomukserver:
$ lsof | fgrep /media
nepomukse 3801 jonrysh 25r DIR 11,0 2048 1856 /media/Fedora 18 x86_64
nepomukse 3801 jonrysh 26r DIR 11,0 2048 2176 /media/Fedora 18 x86_64/EFI
QThread 3801 3807 jonrysh 25r DIR 11,0 2048 1856 /media/Fedora 18 x86_64
QThread 3801 3807 jonrysh 26r DIR 11,0 2048 2176 /media/Fedora 18 x86_64/EFI
QInotifyF 3801 3809 jonrysh 25r DIR 11,0 2048 1856 /media/Fedora 18 x86_64
QInotifyF 3801 3809 jonrysh 26r DIR 11,0 2048 2176 /media/Fedora 18 x86_64/EFI
Killing nepomukserver (process 3801) just gets it opened again by
another instance.
Any help or advice about either of these troubles will be very welcome.
BTW: I have got the CDROM out of the drive by logging out as myself,
logging in as root, and then ejecting the drive.

Scaling
by Richard Vickery
In 17 there was an easy way to scale a photo for a background to the
screen. In Fedora 18 this ease is gone. Is there a way to scale a photo to
fit the screen without the ease of a button that I can do on my own?
Thanks,
Richard

Installing Fedora 18 with prexisting fedora 17 partitions
by Mickey
F17 > F18
I have finally figured out how to install F18 and saving my existing
/home partition, so as not to loose my home directory.
But I would be Damd to explain how in a email , I would just confuse the
H out of everyone and myself. the guy at Fedora that came up with this
installer, must have done the coding at the local Bar when he was
totally Shit Faced.
Does anyone know of a website that shows the installing of f18 , I
checked all over the Internet and youtube for this type of f18 install
with no luck.

Kernel Specific Bug?.....
by EGO-II.1
After upgrading my laptop to the latest kernel I now get a system error
stating that there's a problem with the "upgrade"...supposedly there's a
request for packages to be upgraded but there's nothing to be upgraded?
I'm not sure about the error and I will try to get more info on
it,...just wanted to know if anyone else experienced anything funky when
updating?
