Default mailto application on Fedora 17
by Dave Close
I'm running Fedora 17 with the KDE desktop. KDE's system settings
("control panel") claims the default mailto application is Kmail. And,
since Gnome is still present, I see that it thinks the default mailto
application is Evolution. I don't see anything in /etc/alternatives
that seems relevant to a mailto handler.
Firefox says, "Firefox normally uses your operating
system's default mail program to send an e-mail message."
But Firefox says the default handler is Thunderbird. Where the hell is
Firefox finding that value? And Firefox doesn't offer either of the
other two "defaults", Kmail or Evolution, as options (except through
the "other program" mechanism).
Can anyone explain what's going on?
I'd like to change the mailto handler. But I need to pass some arguments
to my program and Firefox doesn't offer that ability itself. To get that
ability, I need to be able to change the system default so that Firefox
recognizes the change. But where is Firefox finding the "default"?

Fedora 18 on MacBook Pro
by Sanne Grinovero
Hello all,
while I don't like OsX and have been "linux power user" for over many
years, I was offered a new MacBook pro 15" (non-retina) as an upgrade
for the old work laptop (edition summer 2012).
Using Fedora as main OS I immediately suspected this choice was not
ideal, but the build quality and hardware was tempting so I accepted
the offer, well aware I'd have to work a bit to get Fedora running on
it. Also very rarely I need to test some things on OsX so being able
to dual boot in it sounded like a good idea.
By following some guides I installed rEFIt and managed to install
Fedora 17 initially, but that was a disaster of workarounds needed to
apply as kernel parameters and never got it stable, so I ended up
installing beta1 of Fedora 18.. much better: after yum updating to the
latest kernel packages I noticed I don't even need dirty tricks such
as disabling apic: the system is stable for desktop usage.
There are still plenty of problems to solve for "on the road" usage:
- if I try to suspend it, it can't resume -> have to cold-restart it.
- booting up is extremely slow, rEFIt seems to search for a long time
before handing over to Grub
- when using out of the box parameters, the battery doesn't give you
much more than 30 minutes work time
All these combined make it damn hard to "quickly check something".
After using powertop I can get it to roughly 1,2 hours, better but
clearly something is wrong yet.
I'm suspecting the NVIDIA card: if I run lspci it reports a single VGA
device from NVIDIA; I'm pretty sure that this laptop has an intel one
as well and is supposed to activate NVidia only on demand.
I don't actually need dynamic switching, I'd like to disable the
Nvidia one and use the Intel one only; I'm not even sure what X is
using today: /var/log/Xorg.0.log mentions VESA .. looks strange to me
as Gnome3 is succesfully working with all effects.
My suspicion is that I'm not booting the system with EFI and the damn
thing is emulating the BIOS mode as it would do for Windows
installations (through Apple's bootcamp), this might explain why the
Intel device is "hidden"?
Looking at >top I can also see that gnome-shell is burning a hell of
CPU, is that how I'm having the full effects experience while running
on VESA? I see gnome-shell using around 50% of *each* of my CPUs.
In my experiments I also tried to use nuoveau or the Nvidia
proprietary drivers, to see if they could improve either CPU or
battery.
nouveau: it doesn't seem to load the modules.
NVidia: system locks up
booting from self-built kernel 3.8.0-rc2 (to try newer nouveau):
system boots, Gnome3 shows a useless error "something went wrong,
contact your sysadmin".. no clue so I abandoned this path (of course
this could have failed for other reasons).
As resuming from suspend also fails because the screen doesn't turn on
again, I hope all these problems are related.
Anyone has a clue please?
As I'm suspecting it's using the BIOS emulation (how to check??), I'd
like to try booting it as a "real EFI" OS but I have no clue of how
that would work, and couldn't find much literature on this subject, at
least not suitable for my level of skill.. any pointers appreciated,
especially to work with Fedora 18!
Thanks in advance,
Sanne

How to Set/Get UUID for a NIC
by Khemara Lyn
Dear All,
Sorry if this had been covered before.
How can I set or get the UUID for a NIC? I have installed new system,
initially with a single NIC; now I've added another NIC and would like
to create a new UUID to be used in the new network-script file (e.g.
ifcfg-em2).
I did some searches over Google and found related topics on hard disk
partitions only (such as blkid /dev/sda1, ls -l /dev/disk/by_uuid); but
none of the them covers the UUID for a NIC.
I understand that, we can create a new network-script file without the
UUID. However, i'm still curious of how it can be done.
Thanks in advance for any help or comment.
Regards,
Khem

Fedora 18: Install with LVM on RAID 1
by Guido Winkelmann
Hi,
How can I make the Fedora installer install the OS in Logical Volumes that lie
on top of a RAID 1 MD-device?
I have some fairly specific ideas about how I want my harddisk space used,
which previous versions of Fedora would allow with no problems:
sda1 -> /boot
sda2 \
-> md0 -> PV -> VG -> various different system LVs
sdb2 /
sda3 \
-> md1 -> used directly as data partition
sdb3 /
sda5 -> another data partition
sdb5 -> another data partition
The parts below md0 are not so important, I can easily add those manually
after the system is installed and up and running (provided the installer will
graciously leave me some unpartitioned space on my hds - another aspect that
seems needlessly hard to control with the new partitioning tool). However, the
parts on md0 really need to be supported by the installer itself, because
that's where the actual OS is installed, and I just cannot seem to figure out
how to make it do it this way. All it ever seems to do is collect all the
available unpartitioned hd space on all selected hds and combine it into one
large Volume Group...

Very OT Rails 3 enquiry
by Roger
Apologies for off topic but I've looked everywhere and don't find answers.
Using Fedora 16, latest Ruby and latest Rails.
I have been following Pragmatic Agile Web Dev with Rails 4th edition.
Have a scaffold person with some fields, it all works ok but I now
have a select list in the view and need to include a selection/choice
from that select list in the person table.
The Select list is generated from another table so that drop down
collection selections are not hard coded.
After googling and searching Rails sites for hours I have no idea where
else to look or who to ask. Can some one please point me where to obtain
such info please.
Is there a definitive work or set of tuts that show how to use data from
other tables, how to use join tables, how data from a number of tables
is stored and accessed for presentation in a view.
I've joined the Rails forum and Ruby forum but unlike the Linux forums
there seems no way to ask questions and get email answers.
Help is very much appreciated, thanks in advance.

F17: fan at max speed after X crash, what can I do?
by Frédéric Bron
When quiting Extreme Tux Racing from full screen mode (on NVidia
card+nvidia proprietary driver), the screen became black and CPU ran
at 100%. I had to hard power off the computer.
But since then, the fan is always at max speed making such a noise!
how can I come back to normal?
Best wishes,
