f16 grub2 how to edit grub.cfg results of os-prober?
by Jackson Byers
f16 preupgrade from f14, and is apparently working well.
But os-prober has put in lot of menuentries, many of which
are either blatantly wrong, or outdated,
which I would like to remove from grub.cfg.
fedora wiki generally advises it is not safe to edit grub.cfg.
Can I safely edit grub.cfg if I limit my editing to removal
of particular entries?

Problem setting keyboard type -
by Bob Goodwin
I have two F-17 64 bit computers in which once I selected "US
International" keyboard under Administration > Keyboard that
selection seems always to come up in reboot although the selection
has been changed to "US English." That change takes effect once I go
through the motion of changing it, that is to bring up the GUI menu
and close it while doing nothing else, it already says US Keyboard
is selected, apparently "closing" that menu restore the US settings
until user bobg logs off, when I log on again I have to "fix" the
keyboard. problem.
I tried creating a new user "rfg" and logged off/on with the same
problem.
Any idea what is wrong?

installing fedora linux on Arnova 10
by Ranjan Maitra
I have access to a somewhat old (by about 2 years) thoroughly crappy
Arnova 10 tablet. I wanted to try my hand at installing fedora (or any
linux distribution for that matter) on Arnova 10. I looked around and
could not figure out how to do anything. The tablet's box says that its
minimum OS requirements are MS Windoze XP, Vista and Linux. Does anyone
have any idea what to do? I would not mind instructions for a dummy
given that i am so much at a loss!
Best wishes,
Ranjan

no emacs window
evidently the emacs job is "stopped":

If I go to root as "su" [no dash]
then I do get an emacs window,
although with an annoying error message:
[root@f16a9 byers]# emacs test.sunodash &

[root@f16a9 byers]#
(emacs:2071): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:

Thanks Joe, and Peter
"yum install gdm" seems to have done it.
Up in xfce without use of console, startxfce4.

I am embarrassed to admit that I had forgotten about use of 'fg'.
In my many years of running "emacs filename &",
I have not had to use 'fg'.
What usually happens is that a separate emacs window comes up
and leaves my terminal window (where I entered the emacs command)
still free to be used, while also working in the emacs window.
No need for 'fg' at all.
This normally works the same,
whether running as user byers
or as root(su -)
or as root(su).
>When working as root, I would recommend using emacs -nw. If you really
>want to have a gui, you can try using sudo with tramp.
My brief attempts at "emacs -nw"
show an emacs window that takes over the terminal,
which is not what I want.
But something else has since changed:
as a result of another thread re "f16....xfce"
with much help from Joe Zeff,
I now have xfce working properly,
and also no longer have to use C^alt-f2, startxfce4,
to get graphical display.
The last thing fixed required "yum install gdm".
Moreover,
now when running
"emacs filename &" as root (su -)
now works perfectly : a new emacs window,
terminal window stll free. No use of 'fg' required.
Running "emacs filename &" as root (su)
still gives that previously reported error msg,
but again still gives me a separate working emacs window.
No use of 'fg' required.
Thanks for your response

Thanks Tim <ignored_mailbox@yahoo.com.au> for your nice guidance ?
by Navdeep Singh Sidhu
Respected Sir,
First of all i have posted this topic on this list because i want to gain
some knowledge on this topic , secondly i expected some help on this topic,
because of this problem in our university nobody is even ready to give a
try to Linux system. i just want to give them a reason to not to ignore
Linux & i'm getting bored of listening same stories what windows can do &
Linux can't do , again & again.
Just for reference if you want to see Facebook market in india you can go :
businesstoday.intoday.in/story/facebook-user-count-at-955-mn-84-per-cent-jump-in-india/1/186943.html
And just for knowledge isn't the basic (or what we can say motto?) of
internet is to provide Interconnection for Free or freedom to use
intercommunication. Same as open source's freedom.
Wisdom to Information is called knowledge. & I just want that knowledge.
And if somebody blocks us to do something it just makes us more curious to
do that. So, nothing can stop me getting knowledge.
And i'm not so dumb that i will compromise security of my university plus i
trust my mentors (network admins) they are skilled enough to secure our
networks.
If you are trying to threaten me. T give you assurance that it has no
effect on me. I'm a seeker of knowledge & lover of freedom. So if you think
you can stop me give it your best & Best of Luck from me. And a free advice
from me "where polite guidance can work, threatening can have reverse
effects on same place". So try to be polite & nice & never give advice to
others when you are pissed on somebody else.
I wonder what kind of a developer you are( also those whom you consider
with you while using 'WE') who don't the or don't respect the value of
knowledge & freedom.
Respectfully thanks again !
Regards
Navdeep Singh

Hi Navneet,
I'm not sure if anyone from this list should be responding to this email.
1. Ubuntu-in is not a place to discuss how to break rules. If your
college specifies rules, then they are applicable for your network,
and we will NOT help there.
2. Sending this list to the kernel team and ubuntu-devel is an
extremely bad idea. They have absolutely no relation with your issue.
3. Asking your IT admins nicely enough should be a good enough
solution. Have you tried figuring out why are Linux repos blocked? Is
it due to a bandwidth limit? If yes, you could convince someone from
the college IT to set up a local apt-proxy or apt-cacher (or the
equivalent yum servers) and provide you a way out.
Not all IT Admins are, some infact love to see you grow as a
hacker (the white hat sense, if there's any such sense). Get to know
them well, and they might even support you later in your Open Source
activities.
Ninad

Stavanger or Amsterdam?
by Roelof 'Ben' Kusters
Hey There,
I recently moved to The Netherlands, so I adjusted my clock to the right
Time Zone and Amsterdam... The dot given for Amsterdam is a little out of
reach for real Amsterdam, if you know what I mean. It's closer to
Stavanger. I know it's a small map, but this is quite off...
