question regarding ls w/ colors and capturing to file
by Paul Allen Newell
Fedora List:
I can run "ls -FR" on a directory and get a lovely listing with lots of
color coded information to let me know what is what. I have hit a
directory that is big enough that scrolling though the output isn't
efficient. I would like to capture the output of "ls -FR" into a file
that preserves the color coding (I don't want to read each file as I
wish to visually scan to see if something isn't right and color is a
great way to see it).
My attempts with "more" have stripped color. So has "less". Does anyone
have an idea how to capture the output of "ls -FR" that keeps the color
coding?
This is a low priority item ... just something that would be nice to be
able to do
Thanks in advance,
Paul

How to debug high system load?
by Suvayu Ali
Hi,
I have a ThinkPad (Core i7, 2.67GHz) with F17 and I'm seeing high system
loads persistently. Right from boot up I see loads of 1, and often it
goes up to 2 or more.
Things I have looked at:
1. I'm using Xfce, so the desktop environment is also light.
2. I looked at the output of `systemctl list-units' and don't see any
unnecessary services enabled.
3. top only says currently Xorg is the most active process with 1% CPU
activity. From the activity summary of atop since boot, I see it's
Xorg with 3% CPU usage. And while idling all my 4 logical cores are
throttled down and are at about 1%.
So my question is since CPU usage is already so low, what could be
driving up the system load? This is bugging me since I also see a
general sluggishness compared to a much faster system early this year.
Thanks for any ideas.

SO I have just copied the names of the updates, and the error message I get when it fails. Hopefully someone can help me out with this!?

It sounds like you are trying to upgrade from F16 to F17? Via what method?
And you have F15 stuff still on your F16 system?
Maybe a good idea would be to first run yum distro-sync .... And find whatever else is hanging around from F15.

Apache2 directory listing problem F16
by Mark Haney
I'm trying to get apache2 to allow me to list files and directories on
my netbook for use as a public repo to let my kids copy them if they
want them.
The problem is, no matter what I do, I get an access denied error. By
default apache2 has INDEXES enabled for DOCROOT, but to be on the safe
side I added a new directory directive for <DOCROOT/pics> and set
INDEXES. Still nothing.
Then it occurred to me that selinux might be screwing with me, so I hit
the troubleshooter and followed the directions for setting up a new
policy for enabling directory access and used semodule to enable it.
Still no go. Anything else I can do to fix this? There's nothing really
in the access or error logs that help. The apache user is owner and the
perms are correct.

F17: trying to diagnose problem with external USB drive
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
I'm running F17 x86_64, and I have a problem with one of the external
USB drives I use for backups.
Changing _cable_ doesn't make any difference. The problem never
happens with my other drives, so the most likely explanation is that
this one is slowly breaking, and it is time to replace it.
However, I'd like your opinion, to be 100% sure that this is the case,
instead of some weird software issue, to understand exactly what is
happening, and if/how the drive can be recovered.
I formatted the drive with
mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdb1
when I run commands like this (the YYYYMMDD directory contains several
files not over 2GB each):
cp -r -p /backups/20120717 /media/LACIE/backups
nothing bad happens. But when I rsync my photo backup folder:
rsync -rpvt --delete /photo/ /media/LACIE/photo
the drives ALWAYS becomes read-only at some point, thus making rsync fail
dmesg says (complete output below) that:
[625087.410234] FAT-fs (sdb1): error, fat_free_clusters: deleting FAT entry beyond EOF
[625087.410239] FAT-fs (sdb1): Filesystem has been set read-only
So, is this surely an hw failure, or may it be something else? And why
it always happens with rsync, but never with cp -r?
Thanks,
Marco

multiple terminals with different colors
by Mihamina Rakotomandimby
Hi all,
I use Fedora 16 LXDE spin.
LXTerminal is working fine, but I want a feature.
Problem:
When I open multiple LXTerminal and I set the BG color of one, all the
other terminals also change.
I want to setup the BG color independantly, because I use BG color to
identify what remote server I am connected to.
What settings, or what terminal application or wrapper do you recommen
me to achieve this?
Thank you.

Check your /etc/default/grub, if you use raid 1.
by Sam Varshavchik
There's a long standing combination of two bugs: the list of rd.md.uuid boot
parameters generated by anaconda for /etc/default/grub may not include the
raid uuid of non-stock partitions like /home; and although the ramfs
initscript autodiscovers all raid volumes present, sometimes (not always,
I'll estimate 5% of the time) if a uuid is not enumerated in the boot
parameters, one of the drives in the raid 1 volume may not get assembled at
boot.
There's probably a third bug in here: mdmonitor should've mailed me when an
array came up degraded at boot (I suspect that because mdmonitor gets
started so early in the boot process, not all the moving pieces are there
for mail delivery to happen). Eventually, you'll boot again with both drives
in the array somehow, except they'll be out of sync, resulting in massive
corruption. If you're lucky, you'll boot just with the other drive, and
discover that your filesystem's contents are weeks/months out of date, and
maybe you'll be lucky enough to figure out what happen, and switch back to
the other drive and resync. But, not everyone's so lucky.
This first started happening in F16. It took me a while to figure out the
cause for an occasionally raid assembly failure at boot. Fixed it, and
forgot about it. Well, looks like the F17 anaconda brought back the broken
/etc/default/grub, which found its way into my grub.cfg, and I just lost a
full day, cleaning up this mess.
So, if you use raid 1 and upgraded to F17, you may need to fix this before
it's too late: put back the missing uuid into /etc/default/grub, and into
every entry in grub.cfg
Pissed.
