Re: (fedora) gnome3 - nothing but problems (for me)
by Jouk Jansen
Hi all,
I was feeling the same about gnome3, until I found out that you still could
run the gnome-panel:
i.e. /usr/bin/gnome-panel --replace
Or to make it start "automatically" :
create the file ~/.config/autostart/panel.desktop with the following contents
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-panel --replace
Hidden=false
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
Name[en_US]=gnome-panel
Name=gnome-panel
Comment[en_US]=gnome-panel
Comment=gnome-panel

kleopatra and ldap configuration
by Maurizio Marini
I am trying to get my localhost ldap server configured into Kleopatra as x509
backend, but for some reason it does not work
This is Fedora 16 with Kleopatra 2.1.1
I am using the same data that i use into claws to configure ldap address book
backend, to be sure they are correct
========================
Claws settings: they are very simple
Name: Myserver
Hostname: localhost
port: 389
Search base: dc=my-domain,dc=com
Extended tab:
Bind DN: cn=Manager, dc=my-domain,dc=com
Bind password: *******
I am wondering why these settings are not ok for Kleopatra; maybe i need a
schema for x509?
thx

Weird mouse behaviour after update
by Mark Haney
I don't really know what is going on, and I'm not entirely sure the
problem is strictly a Fedora problem or not, but since the last update
my mice (mouses? meese?) have lost their minds. Sometimes a single acts
like a doubleclick, sometimes it doesn't accept the click at all.
Highlighting is sporadic at best, and getting window focus with the
mouse is very much hit or miss.
Is anyone else encountering this type of problem? I will say that it
appears my Kubuntu box at home seems to exhibit the same problem, but I
only used it a few minutes last night so I can't say for certain. I've
tried other mice with this machine and it makes no difference on how it
acts.
FWIW, all my systems are KDE. I know there was just a KDE update and
while it could be a KDE issue, I am trying to narrow down the cause.

Wow! Another BeOS'er! I've still got my original box and CD. It's a
shame it went defunct. It was way ahead of it's time.

A confession
by Neil Bird
My name is Neil, and I have found that I actually quite like GNOME Shell.
I had to update my box from Fedora 14 a fortnight ago, and was dreading
having to move from a GNOME (+ compiz) environment, including persuading the
family. I'd updated my laptop a while ago, and was just about getting on
with GNOME Shell, but it's a completely different use case for me than the
desktop. I'd tried and been deeply unimpressed by the preview versions
available on F14, and had an every increasing list of worries (lack of
configurability [I like to be able to use the mouse wheel over the window
title to shade/unshade - I still can't do this on GNOME Shell], and I had
come to *hate* metacity (hence compiz, and openbox at work).
I'd prepared by installing XFCE and even Cinnamon (which I might try
again a little down the line should it get Google-calendar integration).
But I thought I'd do the Right Thing™ and give GNOME Shell a proper try.
So I updated my box (which was a minor horror story all of its own,
trying to sort out a stuffed grub2 configuration and then an RPM d/b broken
by anaconda). And [finally] managed to log in using GNOME Shell.
And, actually, ... it's quite nice (now I've re-themed it). There are
some things I still miss, mouse bindings being a big one (although I have my
extra thumb button doing the overview mode using xbindkeys and xdotool), and
I'm half-way to re-implementing the sticky-notes applet as an extension (I
wrote a MythTV monitor extension over the weekend, which I'm quite chuffed
with).
But all the things I *though* might annoy me ... haven't.
So, I'm come out now: I was a GNOME Shell doubter, but I'm (almost)
converted. And I just thought I ought to say so.
Although we shall see how I feel when our application toolbars disappear
up into the main panel ...

Sigh. As is mentioned in the OP, I've tried multiple mice on both
systems. Both wired AND wireless. I'm really not new to debugging an
issue. Mainly, my post was one of curiosity rather than requesting a
solution. I'm of the mindset right now that it's a KDE 4.8.2 issue
considering I've got the same problem on completely different hardware
and completely different distros but upgraded to 4.8.2 at the same time
this popped up.
That doesn't mean it's a bug, it may just be a tweak to the mouse config
is needed. Just wanted to see if anyone had seen it.
