default sound device with kde phonon/gstreamer-backend
by Ian Malone
Does anyone have suggestions about this? Maybe I'm missing something
very obvious. I'm using a system which has a HDMI sound (by virtue of
a new graphics card) and a dedicated sound card (which is what I want
to use). Trying out KDE I've found that applications like amarok want
to output to the HDMI output. I can't see any way to change this.
KDE's multimedia configuration shows only the pulseaudio device. The
device setup menu shows the individual devices (including also a
webcam microphone), but doesn't appear to give any way to change the
default or priority. Pavucontrol shows the output to HDMI and that can
be changed on a per application basis, I can also set the fallback
device using it (which allows KDE to play a test sound to it), but
it's not an ideal solution and amarok seems to ignore the fallback
device, requiring it to be explicitly changed. Not ideal. How can the
priorities be set properly for KDE/Phonon/Gstreamer back-end?

Can't get rpmbuild to work with gpg-agent
by Guido Winkelmann
Hi,
I'm trying to package some software with rpmbuild and signing the packages at
the same time. I'm following the guide found here:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-rpm3/
It mostly works - I do get properly signed RPMs at the end - however, despite
running gpg-agent, rpmbuild keeps asking for my (lengthy) GPG-passphrase every
single time it is finished with a spec-file. This can be particularly annoying
when building very large packages, because, instead of asking again, rpmbuild
will abort the entire process if I mistype the passphrase even once. If I run
rpmbuild again after that, it will build the whole package over again...
I have started gpg-agent (as a normal user) with
gpg-agent --daemon --enable-ssh-support \
--write-env-file "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info"
I have put the following lines
if [ -f "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info" ]; then
. "${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info"
export GPG_AGENT_INFO
export SSH_AUTH_SOCK
export SSH_AGENT_PID
fi
GPG_TTY=$(tty)
export GPG_TTY
at the end of my .bashrc, and also manually run them in my current shell. The
env command tells me it knows of the variables GPG_AGENT_INFO, SSH_AGENT_PID,
SSH_AUTH_SOCK, and GPG_TTY, with plausible looking values in all cases. When I
just run gpg-agent in my current shell with no parameters, it tells me "gpg-
agent: gpg-agent running and available". I'm running rpmbuild like this:
rpmbuild -ba --sign rpmbuild/SPECS/<specfile>
What am I still missing?

Upgrade Fedora 14->15
by Henrik Frisk
Hi,
I finally decided to upgrade my Fedora 13 using the software upgrade.
I made a succesful upgrade to 14, booted it and it worked fine. I then
proceeded to do 14 -> 15. Upon reboot all packages were installed but
at the very end the installer crashed with a very long message. I
saved it but couldn't do much with it. I rebooted but now I get only a
back screen. No grub no nothing.
I tried to mount the partitions from another computer but it is as if
there is something wrong with the table because I can't see the
partitions apart form the swap. Right now I'm making a bootable media
to see if I can figure out what went wrong.
Anyone has any ideas what I can do apart from reinstalling the system?
I would love it if I didn't have to configure everything all over
again.
The hardware is a MacBook Pro 5,2, Intel Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M
Thanks for any hints.
/Henrik

Backup To Hard Drive....
by EGO-II.1
I am currently using Fedora 17 on a Gateway T-6321 Laptop with 3.0GB of
memory and a 320 GB Hard drive. I am trying to run the "Backup" that
came with Fedora and have the entire set of files save to an external
2.5" SATA Hard drive connected with a StarTech enclosure that connects
to the laptop via USB. Everything starts just fine....I create a folder
on the drive and start the backup...about 3 minutes in I get an error
message telling me that process could not complete, because f a
permissions error. I have used GParted to format the drive with ext4 and
cleaning all the space on the drive...but even after I do this I cannot
create files or folders on the external hard drive to use for backups.
Is there something I need to do with this drive so that I can use it for
backing up my Fedora laptop on a biweeky basis? More info below:
External HDD = Western Digital "Scorpio" 160GB Serial ATA HDD
Connections = StarTech InfoSafe USB 2.0 SATA Drive Enclosure
Fedora 17 with all updates installed. (Including latest GRUB)

How to connect fedora 17 to android with bluetooth
by Kevin Wilson
Hi,
Status is:
hciconfig on the fedora machine shows that the bt device is "UP RUNNING
PSCAN"
and has a valid BD address.
I can make a bluetooth scan from Fedora (hcitools scan) and see the Android
phone.
On the other hand, scannning from Android does not find the fedora machine.
Any advice on why is it so ?
Second, is it a valid state ? can I make a connection in this state between
Fedora machine
and Android with bluetooth ?

attach usb scanner to cups?
by Mike Wright
I followed the previous thread with interest ("Network scanner").
I'm running CUPS on an old laptop with a parallel port printer attached.
The printer is detected and added and is available network wide.
I also have an old Epson USB flatbed scanner. It works and is usable
with xsane, gimp, etc. on the localhost.
Is it possible to make this available via CUPS?
Thanks for any help,
Mike Wright

Network scanner
by Matthew Saltzman
I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/copier.
I have no trouble getting CUPS to print to it, but I'm having trouble
getting xsane to find it. I have the hplip drivers installed, but I'm
not sure what has to be configured in xsane to get it to recognize it as
a network scanner (as opposed to USB).
Does anyone have this or a similar unit working who could provide a
step-by-step guide?
Thanks.
