Anyone got three monitors working?

Howdy All -
I have Gigabyte EP43-UD3L motherboard with a single PCI Express 2.0 x16
slot. It currently has a decent NVidia card - a GeForce 7300 GT. I've
got two monitors attached, one via the VGA port and one via the digital
video port. It works well, I get accelerated X and wobbly windows and
all that silliness. Guilty pleasure: I like eye candy.
I'd *really* love to do triple head - the monitor in front of me for my
main work, and the two side screens for supporting stuff.
I am wondering, since my motherboard has a four PCI Express x1 ports and
I see PCI Express x1 video cards for decent prices, if I can either
replace my single card with two identical two-port X1 cards, or just add
a single X1 video card to what I already have and get triple head.
Has anyone done this?

oovoo.com
by Gregory P. Ennis
Dear List,
I was asked to assist connecting a Fedora linux system for video
conferencing with oovoo.com. It is apparent that they support Mac and
Windows.
Does anyone have any experience in using the Mac installation for oovoo
for Fedora? Can anyone make recommendations for connections that allow
video conferencing with Fedora.
Thanks much

Gnome-Shell
by David Quigley
Is there a list anywhere of supported hardware for gnome-shell? I've
tried it on 3 computers so far and none of them work. The first was
VMWare which I've seen isn't supported so I wrote that off. The second
was a dell optiplex 790 with on-board intel accelerated graphics. The
final one is an optiplex 960 with a Radeon HD 3450 in it. Is there
something wrong with the setup or is gnome-shell really that selective
about hardware even after its been in two Fedora releases?

Fedora 16 black screen with Radeon HD 6470M: partially solved?
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
SHORT VERSION: I think I've found a temporary solution to this Fedora
install problem (found on other distros too), but I am not sure about
_why_ it works, and it's the best solution. Any feedback is very
appreciated.
I've got a HP G6 1273SL laptop with this chipset and a live cd of
Fedora 16 x86_64, KDE spin.
When running live from the CD there were NO graphic problems. So I
went and installed it on the laptop hard disk. The install was
successful, or so anaconda said, so I rebooted.
I got the GRUB 2 menu just fine. However, when I select or let start
the default entry, the screen goes completely black. If I remove the
"quiet" option in the grub entry I see that the last thing before it
goes black is "radeon something..." (too fast to read it...)
So it seems to me that is the same issue mentioned here:
http://ask.fedoraproject.org/question/179/black-screen-while-startingwhen...
I have done a bit of research and found this:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/28848/what-does-the-kernel-boot-parameter-...
linked from
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+ques...
which also mentions the same problem on Fedora, and indeed, if I
enter "e" in grub and add to its initrd line the two parameters
acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor
Fedora boots without problems, but the laptop is quite warm.
This other page says even the first parameter alone is OK:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/765438/comments/2
Now the questions:
1) first of all, I admit I don't really understand how and why this
works, that is if this is a real/ complete / best solution. Should
I add those two parameters to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, rerun
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
and go on? I believe i should also try some combination of
vgaswitcheroo and/or radeon.modeset=0 as mentioned in other "
Radeon HD 6470M and black linux screen" threads like
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11271523
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1781662
that, as far as I undertsand, should be better since they should
completely turn off that chip and make the laptop cooler but... how
to implement them in Fedora? This not clear to me.
2) why there was no problem with the live cd??? What are the options
used there that make the distro work from the cd but not from the
hard disk?
Please note that, for me, at least for the short/medium term, it is
perfectly OK for me to use only the on-board graphich chipset instead
of the radeon one, I don't need to do heavy 3D stuff with this
laptop...
Thanks, hope this helps.

F16 unusable while writing to pendrive
by Patrick O'Callaghan
This looks like a regression. Under F15 when I wrote large files to a
pendrive, the system would become a little sluggish. Now it essentially
freezes until the write terminates. What I mean is that the UI is almost
completely unresponsive; even clicking between two terminal windows is
so slow that you can see the window contents refresh, followed several
seconds later by the frame.
Fully updated F16 with KDE, Intel Core 2 Dual, 4GB RAM, Intel onboard
graphics. The pendrive is an 8GB Patriot Xporter (a year or two old)
under USB-2 with no intervening hub.

ld finds some libraries, but not others.
by Jonathan Ryshpan
A build is failing with the error cannot find <library> for libraries
that are, in fact present on the system.
I made a very simple test bed, consisting of the empty file conftest.c,
which I attempt to compile and link with various libraries. All the
libraries are in /usr/lib64. Sometimes the compilation fails with
undefined reference to `main'
which is what I would expect, but often it fails with
cannot find -l<whatever>
I have no idea what's happening. Can anyone explain?
Here's an example of what's going on. This is a listing of some files
in /usr/lib64:
1167 lib64 $ ll libICE.so* libgd.so* libkate.so* libkblog.so.*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 15 Nov 9 18:28 libICE.so -> libICE.so.6.3.0*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 15 Nov 9 08:02 libICE.so.6 -> libICE.so.6.3.0*
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 98328 Jun 21 09:37 libICE.so.6.3.0*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 14 Nov 9 08:14 libgd.so.2 -> libgd.so.2.0.0*
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 278048 Oct 26 20:15 libgd.so.2.0.0*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 16 Nov 9 08:06 libkate.so.1 -> libkate.so.1.2.1*

-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 312960 Nov 4 10:05 libkblog.so.4.7.0*
And here's a attempt to compile the dummy linking to them:
1033 wview-5.19.0 $ gcc -o conftest -g -O2 conftest.c -lICE
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.6.2/../../../../lib64/crt1.o: In function `_start':

Question on shredding a terebyte drive
by Dean S. Messing
I have a terebyte sata drive that I need to securely wipe clean. It
originally had 2 partitions. I deleted them using `fdisk', rebooted,
and then as root ran
shred -vz /dev/sdd
The drive is capable of about 60MB/sec, but shred is only "shredding"
about 25MB every 5 seconds according to its output. Since the default
number of passes is 25, this works out to about 5 days.
The `shred' process is running at 100% CPU, presumably computing
the special random patterns for erasure. Since I have 4 CPUs
would creating 4 unformatted partions on the drive and then running
something like:
shred -vz /dev/sdd1
shred -vz /dev/sdd2
shred -vz /dev/sdd3
shred -vz /dev/sdd4
in parallel cut my time? Would be just as secure?
Thanks

OT: How much RAM should I get in a new laptop ?
by linux guy
I'm specing a new laptop, probably a Dell XPS 17, with an i7
processor. It will have an SSD and be driving 2 monitors.
The XPS 17s come in two varieties, one with 2 DIMM slots and the other
with 4 DIMM slots.
- I do a ton of browsing for research purposes and may have as many as
20 Firefox sessions open at one time.
- I use Thunderbird with mail accounts with more than 100K messages in them.
- I do some software development in Eclipse with gcc. Compile times
can be lengthy on some projects.
- I use Digikam to manage and edit all my Nikon D7000 images, which
are shot in raw
- I want to get into editing D7000 video files
- I want to get into 3D CAD.
How much RAM do I reasonably require ? Is it worth paying more for 4
DIMM sockets over 2 ?
Thanks !

Printer detection in Fedora
by Fred Smith
Hi all!
Just a note to throw out here, in case Tim W. or anyone else finds the
information helpful.
I have, until earlier this year, run Fedora on my eeepc 901. When F15
came out I played with it as a live CD and didn't really like the gnome
changes, so I've moved on to other Linuxen.
But my purpose in posting here:
as late as F14 and F15, when I'm given to understand the printer
configuration tools should be able to autodetect and configure most
printers, I found that for my Brother HL-2070N I needed to manually
configure it. why? well,... the "new printer" option in the printer
setup utility (is it system-printer-config ???) would never figure out
what kind of printer it was even if it did otherwise find it out there
on the LAN. I figured it was just one of those printers that didn't
announce itself with enough detail for the system to auto-config.
Well, time goes by and I try playing with a Linux-Mint 12 live cd, and
to my astonishment I find that when I choose to add a new printer, I
dont' have to enter ANY settings, it "just works".
Note that I HAVE NOT tried using F16 to configure this printer on this
netbook, perhaps it works just as well, now, as does Linux-Mint 12, I
dunno. But certainly Mint gives me a better experience, in this regard,
than did F14 or F15.
Consider this just a note to offer a suggestion on where you may be able
to look to find out more of how some printers can be diagnosed successfully,
in case you've not already achieved this in the latest versions.
And even though I"m not currently using Fedora, I appreciate all the work
you guys have done, and still think Fedora is a great distribution.
Thanks muchly!
Fred
