kmod-catalyst and monitor config
by Joseph L. Casale
I needed working ogl for a couple cad apps so I installed the kmods (akmods wouldn't
compile on latest on latest kernel, so running 1 behind present).
When I first booted, I had my laptop and external monitor working, res on ext was low.
So I disabled LVDS and set CRT1 to 1680x1050 (Auto) but it wouldn't change, so I went
down one res setting, then back and it changed?
Subsequent reboots though keep setting it low. What's with the (Auto) in the 1680x1050 setting and the changing
behavior? xorg.conf is as the catalyst install left it. livna-config-display crashes when run.
Thanks!

Firewall - OUTPUT rule
by JD
The firewall is belching these messages:
Sep 23 19:22:39 vger kernel: Dropped by firewall: IN=wlan0 OUT= MAC=
SRC=192.168.0.8 DST=192.168.0.255 LEN=223 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=0
DF PROTO=UDP SPT=631 DPT=631 LEN=203
Thing is, 192.168.0.8 is my wlan0 ip address.
Since port 631 is the internet printing protocol, the packet must be
getting sent by the cups daemon
because I configured to print on a network wireless printer.
What should an OUTPUT rule look like to allow these packets to be sent?
Or is it a problem with my INPUT filters?

Working ATI driver?
by Bill Davidsen
I have a new ATI Radeon card in a new system, PCI says:
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350]
03:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV710/730
Is there a driver which will use this card? I would happily take a
driver from ATI or the devil himself, but having an expensive new system
which I have to run in text mode is a bit over the top. Currently
running kernel 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64 getting little use of the system.
I tried two other boards, different boards, similar results.

The machine is at work so I can't get to it to check for sure until next
week. I have to reboot the system, enable it in the BIOS then use a hardware
lister utility to get the hardware vendor and version. Fedora has a utility
to do this.
I did a Google search and what comes up is a Broadcom BCM57780. Dell isn't
very good about disclosing what hardware they use. Dell, like several
others, like to use custom manufactured motherboards from brand named
vendors in their products, and they don't supply a "manual" like you would
expect from a boxed motherboard. Even if you do find out who made the board
and contact them they won't supply any information, they just tell you to
contact the other company.

Desktop right-click menu
by Greg Woods
Is there any way to modify the menu that comes up when you right click
on the desktop? I would like to add an item.
What I need is a way to invoke nvidia-settings from a blank desktop.
This comes up on my new laptop. The LCD screen resolution is 1440x990,
very nice but that resolution isn't supported by any of the monitors I
connect it to, so it comes up in separate screen mode and the monitor
screen is a blank desktop. I would like to be able to invoke
nvidia-settings from there, without having to open the laptop lid and
use that screen. Once I have nvidia-settings running, I can click a
couple of buttons to change it to "clone" mode and use a supported
resolution, which will give me access to the real desktop on the
external monitor. Unfortunately the resolutions supported by the various
monitors are not the same, so just hard-coding a resolution into
Xorg.conf isn't a good option. I also want the laptop screen to come up
in its maximum resolution by default for the cases where it is NOT
plugged in to an external monitor, so programming a low resolution that
would be supported by any monitor is also not a good option.
