os that rather uses the gpu?
by Arthur Bela
Does someone know a distribution/operating system, that rather uses the
GPU for "working", not the CPU? [by default]
Or this solution is still in the "beginning part"?
Thanks for any tips, link, suggestions.

How can I make local dnsmasq play nicely with NetworkManager?
by Robert Nichols
I am trying to set up dnsmasq as a local resolver cache on my F-12
laptop, and can't find any way to pass the nameservers returned by DHCP
to dnsmasq as upstream nameservers and still have 127.0.0.1 appear as
the primary nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf.
NetworkManager creates a resolv.conf file that contains only the servers
returned by DHCP. That does not allow queries from local processes to
be routed through the local caching resolver.
Without NetworkManager, I would just put a line in dhclient.conf to
prepend "127.0.0.1" to the list of nameservers returned by DHCP.
dnsmasq would then read resolv.conf, nicely ignore that entry, and use
the other nameserver entries as upstream servers. NetworkManager always
invokes dhclient with a custom config file that is created anew for each
invocation, and gives no means to add this customization.
If I configure NetworkManager to put "127.0.0.1" as a nameserver in
resolv.conf, then _only_ that nameserver will appear, and dnsmasq has
no way to discover the upstream servers.
I cannot simply hard code the upstream servers in /etc/dnsmasq.conf
because that would ignore what DHCP returns.
I can put a script in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ to modify
resolv.conf to my liking, but that script does not get invoked for lease
renewals, at which time dhclient would undo my changes.
Getting rid of NetworkManager really isn't a viable option for a laptop
that needs to connect to various WiFi networks.
I find it hard to believe nobody's run into this before, but my searches
on Google have been fruitless. Looking for suggestions before I go
complain on the NetworkManager developers list.

Yum Updates Broken due to SSL Certificate Expiration
by Mark W. Jeanmougin
FYI:
As part of the current issue with the SSL certificate expiration, yum
is not working for Fedora 12. I would bet that Fedora 13 and other
versions are affected as well. Here is the errors that I get when I
try to do a "yum update":
[root@host ~]# yum --downloadonly update
Loaded plugins: dellsysidplugin2, downloadonly, presto
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for
repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again
Just putting this out there in case anyone else gets frustrated at the
same error messages. It sounds like the Fedora guys are working on it
and a new cert should be in place very soon.
Many thanks to all the people that make Fedora work so well!

firefox bug (fedora or mozilla?)
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
I've come across some sites that only partially render when using
firefox. I had been using 3.0.15 so upgraded to 3.6.6 from Remi
Collet's repository in hopes of better functionality but the problem
persists. Note that both of these render correctly when using Chrome.
[1] has three columns. Column one is the login box and it doesn't
display. By drilling down using firebug I can change the iframe to
"display: block" and it appears and is functional. I can't remember
where I found the error but the complaint was that it couldn't find
busybox. I don't know if that is a dependency but it isn't part of the
standard install; yum installing it had no effect (which I expected
because I think there is also a javascript busybox).
[2] has two columns. The left one is the TOC but it doesn't display
either. I can't figure out that one but am inclined to believe it is
also javascript related.
Would some brave soul be so kind as to give these a whirl and let me
know if it works for them?
Thanks,
Mike Wright

Hi Philip,
Here's what you need to do:
1. Open a terminal (Applications>System Tools>Terminal)
2. Switch user to become the system administrator "root" (type "su" and
Enter, then enter the root password)
3. Type the command "yum-complete-transactions". It will try to complete
any incomplete package installation/removal/upgrades that are pending.
4. There may be more than one incomplete transaction, so repeat step 3
until it says that there's nothing more to do.
I noticed that you sent your e-mail to
users-owner(a)lists.fedoraproject.org, which is the administrative address
for the list. You should usually send questions to
users(a)lists.fedoraproject.org, which is the mailing list for general
discussions amongst Fedora users.

Changing Forgotten Root Password

Fedora 11, 12
Changing Forgotten Root Password.
Starting computer and going into Single User Mode and deleting the "x"
in /etc/passwd and restarting computer and login as "root" and add new
root password, does that still hold true for FC10, 11, 12
/etc/passwd
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

Sound Streaming Problem
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
I have a recurring problem with sound streaming with Fedora 13 (and
earlier versions - I am having this problem for quite a while, across
different Fedora versions) on my Dell Latitude 820 laptop. This
affects equally the sound of YouTube videos and music CDs. Sometimes
it works flawlessly, sometimes there is no sound, and sometimes the
sound cycles through short intervals, like a stuck record, but with
faster repetitions.
Occasionally, restarting the application (Firefox, Rhythmbox, etc)
helps, often it does not. Sometimes, logging out and back in helps,
sometimes it does not help. On rare occasions, changing the volume
control helps (when I'm not listening, I usually keep the volume at
zero, and it sometimes seems as if the system has not noticed that the
volume has been turned up, until I turn it up some more).
I tried different plugins/add-ons with Firefox, and different
application to play the music CD, but it does not seem to make a
difference.
What can I do? Thanks!

F9: [unsupported] rt2870 now works, but requires restarting named & httpd after (re)boot?
by Dan Thurman
First, I know F9 is no longer supported, but wanted to
ask if there is a workaround to this problem.
I finally got rt2870 to work on F9, however, I noticed
during a reboot, httpd complained that it could not find
the host's domain, so it chose 127.0.0.1, and secondly
named responded only to localhost queries. I discovered
that restarting named and httpd, in that order, after a
reboot, restored normalcy. The key issue seems to be
that named is not properly started before services? Or
perhaps amanda and/or dnsmasq is interfering with
named?
Is there a fix or a workaround for this issue?
Thanks-

[F13] AVerMedia Volar Black HD/A850
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
I'm planning to purchase an USB TV stick (for DVB-T). I saw that the
AVermedia AVerTV Black HD/-A850 USB is running properly under Ubuntu.
Can somebody confirm that is runs properly under F13 too?
Kind regards and thanx in advance
