I have F12 on this laptop HP Nx5000. The battery capacity is about 3
hours, When the laptop runs on battery, after a few times of auto
suspend, the battery indicator applet shows "Laptop Battery 2 hours 30
minutes remaining (4.7%)". why the remaining percentage was not right?

That RAM deficit is apparently the root of the
problem.
On the advice of others I am going to try Ubuntu
next. I hope that works.

Emacs has very large characters

Hello,
I installed emacs from software that comes with Fedora 12, the
characters are so large that makes unusable. Any body know how to
correct it to a standard font?

Using f13 rpms in f12?

If one wanted to install a rawhide kernel in a running f12 machine I guess
you could do something like
yum --enablerepo development install kernel kernel-devel etc
However there are now rpms in the development directories both for 13/ and
for rawhide/ (and i386 and x86_64) - is there a way to install an f13
(specifically), as opposed to rawhide, package in a system running f12?

Mystified by crontab/anacrontab

I'm trying to understand how cron works nowadays.
I've been comparing my Fedora-12 laptop
with my CentOS-5.4 desktop,
and am slightly baffled by the difference between them.
On the Fedora-12 system the venerable /etc/crontab is empty,
and the work to be done is listed in /etc/anacrontab .
As far as I can make out, there is a program /etc/cron.d/0hourly
which every hour runs /etc/cron.hourly,
which in turn runs a program 0anacron,
which presumably checks /etc/anacron.daily, etc.
I take it this roundabout process is intended
to deal with the case where a laptop is only running
for part of the time?
In any case, the system seems to work well enough.
The programs that run are listed in /var/log/cron .
On my CentOS desktop, both /etc/crontab and /etc/anacrontab
list cron.daily, cron.weekly and cron.monthly ,
and crontab also lists cron.hourly .
But I see nothing in /etc/cron.d to run anacron ,
so it is not clear to me if /etc/anacrontab plays any role.
Also I get no messages in /var/log/cron to say
what individual programs are run hourly, daily, etc.

Since the second message is from anacron,
I assume that crond has started anacron running,
although if that is so it is not mentioned in "man crond".
Also the individual scripts/programs that are run
are not listed in /var/log/cron ,
although I think that may just be an oddity or omission
on the part of CentOS, which does not run "logger" in run-parts
as Fedora does
I see that /usr/bin/run-parts does include

but I'm not sure what happens to material like this

Thank you for the suggestion. Actually, I was able to restore
the original functionality using the Spinrite program from grc.com
to get the disk errors out and then used dd to copy the raw LVM2 partition.
In cases where you are not using and not likely to use the neat
features of LVM, a simple partition is easier to work with.
It's just when I copied the internal ext3 file system in the
LVM Volgroup to a simple partition, I could not get it to boot.
Even after updating the grub device map, the grub.conf, the /etc/fstab,
and even the /etc/mtab, it would complain that it could not find
the volgroup and panic the kernel.
There must be some other control file I have not yet found which
would allow me to get the system to boot as a simple partition.

Xorg 1.7.5, Xinerama, and LeftOf screens

In case anyone else can benefit from this... I just spent 2-3 days
hacking on the X server to get a screen to the left of the main screen
working with Xinerama (no, I can't use Xrandr). Here's the patch
(yes, I'll mail it to xorg too).

Hulu.com and 64-bit Problem?

A curious incompatibility, it seems, between Hulu.com and 64-bit libflashplayer.so plugin has recently reared its ugly head: streaming video won't play or Hulu won't stream them for whatever reason. Also, any other streaming sight that gets some of their content from Hulu like Fancast.com or SlashControl.com has the same problem with those Hulu videos. Those TV shows, movies, clips, etc. that don't come through Hulu work fine.
When it fails, Hulu reports that there may be a problem with my network. (There's not.) Reloading the page, sometimes gets the sound of the lead-in ("This program brought you by . . .") only, but no video. Up until two weeks ago or so, everything worked without problems.
I first thought it might be a update problem with my Fedora 12 64-bit system, but whether I use the most current version of the plugin or an earlier one on Firefox or Opera, the results are the same. However, if I use 32-bit Linux--doesn't matter which distro, it seems--the videos stream just fine. I've tested this with Fedora 12, Puppy 4.3.1, and Vector 6.0 (all 32-bit) running in VirtualBox 3.0 (not the OSE version) on my 64-bit F12 system, and in PCLinuxOS 2009.1 and Puppy 4.3.1 in VB 2.something OSE on Fedora 9 64-bit, both on the same hardware, and all work just fine as long as the version of libflashplayer is later than 10.0 R15.
The Fedora 9 system running natively has the problem, too. Even though it worked fine previously. It is also fully up to date as of July 2009 when support on it ceased.
Anyone have any ideas of the cause? And how to correct it? Or whether this is a 64-bit problem or Hulu or Adobe one?
Also, anyone running F12 64-bit with 32-bit Firefox with the 32-bit flash plugin who could do a test stream, and tell me the results?
Of course, Windows Vista & XP SP3--both 32-bit--work fine.

Help Diagnose Slow Disc Access

My machine has been running slower and slower, and top seems
to indicate lots of I/O wait. I have two ATA discs on a single
cable, wired for cable select. The master is much faster than
the slave, which seems to indicate a hardware, possibly disc,
problem.
Trimmed output:
$ mount

All discs pass fsck with no problems, though the larger (slower)
disc takes an extremely long time to do so.
I tried using smartctl and it doesn't report any anomalies that
I can see, though when I tried running the self tests, the "fast"
disc passed, but the "slow" disc didn't complete the test in a
reasonable amount of time (over 1/2 hour) each time I tried.
This was done with all file systems mounted.
I have shut down, powered down, and unplugged, then reseated
the all the ATA cable connectors, and reseated all RAM, and
the add-on video board etc., with no change to the timings.
Can anyone give me advice on how to proceed with diagnostics?
What diagnostics does Linux provide which can help me figure
out what's going on? Is there a way to get statistics on
missing interrupts, for example? Perhaps the disc is not generating,
or the cable is dropping, IRQs, and the kernel is falling back
to polling, for example. That's the kind of information I'm
looking for. Something to point me in the direction of where
I may be having a hardware problem.
