GoogleEarth segfault
by Matthew Saltzman
I installed the latest GoogelEarth 5.1.3533 from the .bin file (over the
top of an older version that I never got working either), ran restorecon
on the library directory. SElinux stopped complaining about violations
after that, but googleearth still segfaults.
This is 64-bit F12 with the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion.
Anybody with similar experiences? Hints?
TIA.

Trying to convert a LVM partition to non-LVM
by Styma, Robert E (Robert)
I was working on a linux box which had a failing disk over
the weekend. It still booted, but flagged smartd errors
and had a couple of damaged files which were fortunately
replaceable (eclipse install tgz).
I booted Spinrite to make the drive readable and then planned
to use system rescue CD and gparted to copy to an identical
drive. Unfortunately, the machine used the default boot
partition (ext3) and LVM for the root and swap partitions.
gpartd cannot currently deal with LVM partitions. This is
too bad as it is a great tool.
I initially tried laying out the partitions without LVM and
tar copying the root partition over. The /boot partition had
gone across with gpartd. I changed the grub.conf file and
the /etc/fstab file and even the /etc/mtab file. In each
case, the system would start to boot and then the kernel would
panic looking for the logical volumes.
In the end, I just laid out the partitions to match the original
drive and dd'ed both physical partitions to the new drive and it
worked.
My question becomes, "What file(s) other than fstab and grub.conf
need to change to change the root parttion from an LVM parition
to a normal ext partition such as sda2?"
I feel like I am close, but no cigar

Background image on dual screen?
by Alan Evans
I have two monitors an my background image is exactly the size of both
combined. I used to be able to display this background image across
both screens as if they were a single display. I think I chose "Tiled"
to make this happen, but I'm not sure it was always that way.
Anyway, after an update a few months ago, I can no longer do this. My
background image is displayed, either clipped or scaled, once on each
screen instead of once across all screens, no matter what style I
choose from the Appearance Preferences dialog. Is there a way to fix
it?

KAddressbook, Nepomuk, etc
by Timothy Murphy
I'd really like to have a "database" for storing
information about contacts (as in an address book).
My base is Fedora/KDE.
My requirements are:
1. The application should be web-based,
like CUPS, BackupPC, etc.
2. There should be a simple interface with mobile phones.
3. There should be a simple interface with KMail/KAddressBook.
4. The program should be sufficiently flexible
to allow new fields (eg images) to be added.
5. The program should allow general information
eg about films or books to be stored.
6. I'd like the program to interface with Windows Outlook
and similar Windows programs.
Currently OpenLDAP is the nearest I can get to this,
but I find it very cumbersome,
and there seems no simple GUI interface.
As far as I can see, Nepomuk aims vaguely
at something like this,
but it seems too far from practical use to be of much value.
I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution to this,
or indeed whether anyone shares my desire?

Re: Risks of backing up live mounted filesystems using dump(8)
by Jeffrey Metcalf
<alan(a)lxorguk.ukuu.org.uk> wrote:
Journals make the problem far worse.
Good to know and understand.
On restore you will restore a journal log no longer related to whats on
the media, then risk replaying it and causing further damage.
This makes sense. It was not clear to me that the journal was being stored in the "dump data". If so, can it be disabled immediately before dump(8) and then reenabled immediately after? Some highly volatile file systems (like the Oracle file-based database) claim to support hot backups. Assuming their marketing claim is actually valid, what would it take for the ext filesystem to support it?
Block reallocation is also nasty with a dump done that way because you
may end up with undetected data corruption including leaks of data
between uids.
With all these issues, it seems like 'man 8 dump' should advise against its use with mounted filesystems. The only mention of mount status is in the usage description, which indicates that mount points can only be used instead of block device names when calling dump when the filesystem is mounted.
A file system based backup is a good deal safer.
Isn't dump(8) considered a filesystem based backup? Are you refering to something more specialized?
Thanks.

Fedora 12 does not work after replacing the motherboard
by Andrew Junev
Hello All,
I kindly ask for your support. On my MythTV frontend-only machine, I
had to replace the motherboard. The old motherboard was an ASUS P5KR
(Intel P35 chipset), and the newly installed motherboard is an MSI
P43T-C51 (Intel P43 chipset). The old MB wasn't faulty - I just had
to urgently use it in another machine.
Everything else in this system remained basically the same - CPU,
RAM, Video, etc. My video adapter is NVidia 8600GT made by ASUS (don't
remember the model exactly). I am using proprietary NVidia driver from
rpmfusion.
With the new MSI MB, the system just stops responding when trying to
boot into graphical mode (runlevel 5), and there seem to be no errors
in /var/log/messages, dmesg or in Xorg.log.
If booted in runlevel 3 (text mode), the system seem to work, but
there are several kernel oopses coming right after boot:

If I do an 'init 5' while I'm in runlevel 3, I can see Xorg starting
and occupying all of the CPU resources (so that my PC doesn't respond
to keyboard at all, and remote SSH sessions are also interrupted).
Again, I don't see any obvious error messages in the logs when the
system stops responding...
I made a 'yum update', getting all the packages up to date. It didn't
change the behavior at all...
I thought I could reinstall the system completely, but Fedora 12
install DVD also stops responding shortly after the "Check
installation media" step - before actually starting the installation.
At the same time, Fedora 12 Live CD boots up fine (in Gnome) but stops
responding after a few minutes.
I thought this could be a hardware issue. I checked the RAM with
memtest (well, 2 passes went without errors, then I interrupted it).
Then I installed Windows XP - to test if it will fail. XP worked good,
I installed all the drivers and noticed no stability problems at all.
So this looks more like a software incompatibility to me, rather than
a hardware issue (still, I'm not 100% sure)...
Unfortunately my knowledge of Linux isn't any good to be able to
track the problem. Could you please help me to investigate it further?
I can run any tests / provide logs, dumps, etc. Just need to know
where to go and how to look for a solution...
Thanks!

kwin focus
by Chris Rouch
I'm having real problems getting kwin to focus as i want it. Can
somebody explain the difference between:
focus follows mouse
focus under mouse
focus strictly under mouse
and what the various focus stealing prevention levels actually do?
what i'm trying to achieve is that any new windows on the current
desktop should be at the top of the stack, but only receive focus if
they're under the mouse. for windows which appear on a different
desktop, i want them at the top of the stack on that desktop, but i
don't want the desktop to change. i'm sure this must be possible, but
i've yet to find the combination which will do this.
Any help will be appreciated. Pointers to documentation will also be welcome.
Thanks and regards.
