pulse audio not starting F11
by Phill
I have a clean install of Fedora 11 from downloaded install dvd. I noticed my sound stopped working after installing some other things via yum. Might just be a coincidence. I installed groupinstall "Development Tools" "Development Libraries" "Legacy Software Dvelopment". Then I noticed I have these messages in /var/log/messages. This is just a snippet of the pulse audio messages.
Aug 29 10:19:06 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: alsa-sink.c: Increasing wakeup watermark to 30.00 ms
Aug 29 10:19:07 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: alsa-source.c: ALSA woke us up to read new data from the device, but there was actually nothing to read!
Aug 29 10:19:07 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: alsa-source.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_ca0106'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
Aug 29 10:19:07 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: alsa-source.c: We were woken up with POLLIN set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail.
Aug 29 10:19:08 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: alsa-sink.c: Increasing wakeup watermark to 40.00 ms
Aug 29 10:19:10 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: ratelimit.c: 15285 events suppressed
Aug 29 10:19:32 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: ratelimit.c: 16 events suppressed
Aug 29 10:19:32 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: alsa-sink.c: Increasing minimal latency to 1.00 ms
Aug 29 10:19:37 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: ratelimit.c: 3441 events suppressed
Aug 29 10:19:42 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: ratelimit.c: 3508 events suppressed
Aug 29 10:19:43 jkh pulseaudio[2232]: cpulimit.c: Received request to terminate due to CPU overload.
I noticed the messages above saying this is a bug in alsa drivers. Anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

thunderbird-lightning and sunbird: libcalbasecomps.so: undefined symbol: icaltime_compare_date_only_tz
by John Thompson
Lightning (1.0-0.6.20090715hg.fc11) and sunbird
(1.0-0.5.20090715hg.fc11) had been working well for me recently on
Fedora-11 x86_64 but this morning I am greeted with the error message:

I have tried reverting to to early versions of each but the error persists.

I would suggest something like 'lsof | grep -v <gilpel's user name> |
grep -v root' when THEY will come next time...

thunderbird master security device
by Skunk Worx
Hi!
I use F11 and thunderbird for my email. I haven't yum updated for a few
weeks and I got around to it last night.
The latest updates gave thunderbird a new look and feel, which is fine.
But t-bird is also prompting me for a master security device password in
addition to the normal email account passwords. This is definitely new
and I have never set it nor do I know what it is.
Is this an expected behavior? I am planning on going through the
preferences to checkout the new stuff later today.
Thanks,
John

kaffeine sound
by Ed Landaveri
Ladies && gentlemen
I've been using kaffeine for years but on F11 kaffeine sound gets broken. It happens ONLY when watching *.mov files.
Amarok plays fine music files and even kaffeine plays them too. I've been tweaking the xine-engine button going from pulseaudio to alsa to no avail. It only happens on these *.mov files which I can play well on my CentOS boxes.
Please have anyone experienced the same issues? Thank you very much.

[SOLVED] Broken downloads of FC11-x86_64 and other disturbances
by Raphael Wolff
OK, I finally got a working/sha256 matching download of the fc11-x86_64
DVD ISO. Burnt it at 2.4x speed with k3b, because I didn't get along
with 'growisofs' (relative *nix noob).
This time (almost) all went well, except that I had to use 'noapic acpi=off'
flags at boot/install. Now I'll see how I get my configs done, especially
audio. Since pulseaudio seems to be a quite difficult to handle and make work
when having more than one audio interface. I have three:
° hda_intel (ATI onboard chipset, AMD790GX, SB750)
° hda_intel_hdmi (ATI Radeon HD 4650 GFX with HDMI interface)
° ice_1712 (M-Audio Delta 1010LT)
And of course, ATI/fglrx drivers. I know that it's impossible to install them
with 2.6.29.xx due to a bug, but maybe there's already a newer kernel in the repos.
Btw., fc11 is taking forever to boot. Even into XFCE4, which should be really
fast on my hardware.
Many thanks for all your suggestions people.
Raphael ;)

Windoze on a second disk
by Geoffrey Leach
I need to have Windoze on a system that already has Fedora installed (I
need the Everest diagnostic tool). It seems that the cleanest way to do
this would be to install it on a second HD, and have grub boot it off
of (hd1,0). Is there anything that I should be on the lookout for? --
Other than Windoze itself, of course.
Thanks.

Random applications "stretch" vertically for no apparent reason
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone
After running "yum update" on August 24th, and receiving the KDE 4.3 updates, I
have been getting random occurrences of this little beauty:
http://www.afolkey2.net/~steve/20090826-Fedora11-ScreenShot-001.jpg
That is a screen-shot of my entire desktop (with Kontact maximized of course.)
When it does it, an application will start out normal size, and just stretch
itself, and then keep stretching until I stop it. When I opened Gimp 2.7 to
take a screen-shot of Kontact going through it's "afternoon stretch", Gimp
started to stretch as well...
I am running an nVidia based video card and the proprietary nVidia driver.
Since a few other things have taken place around this time, it is VERY possible
that all of the KDE updates are completely unrelated to this:
1. Updated kernel
2. The resulting updated nVidia driver.
3. Rebooted into that new kernel during the investigation of that other issue
that I just solved on this list.
But one thing to consider is that the above three points might not be relevant,
because I HAD NOT rebooted until after the first time that I saw this
"stretching" effect. All it took to begin seeing this was logging out of KDE and
logging back in. Which of course does NOT prove that KDE is at fault.
lspci -v shows the following:

packagekit broke rhythmbox
by Mike Wright
Hi all,
Using f10 here.
Once again packagekit broke my system.
I started an update yesterday afternoon and it seems it decided to
connect to some repo in outer Slobovia with a 300 baud link, so I closed
all my other applications and left it to do its thing.
When I got to my desk this morning the system was still "cleaning up".
There was a popup on my desktop that showed a blue progress bar beneath
which was "sos". Gee that's useful. Had to manually kill the updater.
(should be called degrader ;)
When I went to use Rhythmbox to listen to CBC I no longer could.
Apparently some decoder went missing during the update. Yum update
gstreamer and rhythmbox had no effect - "nothing to update" although it
did advise me that it was freeing eighteen locks!
Here is what "ps" has to say:
rhythmbox
\_ /usr/libexec/gst-install-plugins-helper --transient-for=58720289
gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox|text/html decoder|decoder-text/html
How/where do I get and install this? Why did it disappear (or was this
dependency added)?
Why does packagekit hang?
This is extremely frustrating. Between vim hanging and leaving zombies
all over the place and now a system gone mute I have to say my
experience with f10 has been the worst of the lot. (Not a rant; just
the facts, ma'am.)
If somebody can give me some help on this I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks,
Mike Wright
