converting rm to mp3 via cron issue
by Paul Ward
Hi all,
I am trying to convert a rm stream captured from the bbc as a .rm to mp3.
The idea being I can convert a bbc show like the charts to mp3 and
have it moved to the webserver for download on my work machine in
another country. I found 40k was just about bearable in quality, for
the smallest size possible.
The capture part works well but when try to convert the file it only
converts 400k before stopping when run from a cron job. when I run it
on a comand line it works as esxpected.
Can anyone suggest a work around for this?
Would it be best to split my script and call the conversion as a separate one.
#Capture is:
SHOWNAME=$1
DURATION=$3
DURATION=`expr $DURATION \* 60`
BITRATE="40k"
mplayer -dumpstream "-playlist"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/realaudio/media/r1live.ram -dumpfile
${RECORDINGPATH}${SHOWNAME}.dump -vc dummy -vo null & MPLAYPROCESS=$!
sleep $DURATION
#conversion part:
ffmpeg -i "$RECORDINGPATH$SHOWNAME".dump -f wav - | lame - -b $BITRATE
$WEBDIR/${DATE}_"$SHOWNAME".mp3
I am using ffmeg as I can encode to wav then mp3 in one go.
mencoder did not seem to want to work this way and I ended up with
huge wav files, which after a 3 hour recording is too big on disk.
If anyone has any other ideas let me know.

yum problem with updates
by Genes MailLists
I have several identical F10 systems. Each points to the same local yum
mirror.
Doing an update on 5 machines - 2 updated and 3 did not. Ok I think -
yum clean metadata and try again ... nope... yum clean all ...
nope - 3 machines refuse to update ... I am sure they will update at
some point - what do I do to make it update now .. I mean its the same
local mirror ?
thanks.

Fedora Seamonkey issues
by Bill Davidsen
When pushing updates for seamonkey, it would be really good not to do the
upgrade while there is a SM browser present, as it messes things up in the
running browser. Found that out the hard way, the "change font size" shortcut
stops working, and since my default font is for use with a 32 inch HDMI display,
that's a instant eyestrain.
Also, SM-2.0beta is getting really useful, and perhaps someone would make a
package for that. I have some notes on how I install it and upgrade it manually,
if someone needs them.

Konqueror uses Adobe Reader rather than Okular...
by linux guy
Yesterday I installed Adobe Reader because I needed to fill out an
interactive PDF form.
Today when I view a PDF in Konqueror it is using Adobe Reader rather
than Okular. I want Konqueror to use Okular, not Adobe Reader. If I
open a PDF in Dolphin, it uses Okular.
How do I set Konqueror to use Okular rather than Adobe Reader ?
Thanks

Virtual Box
by Martín Marqués
I'm trying to do some virtualization testing and I wanted to see
Virtual Box that everybody is talking alot about. The thing is that I
can't find the virtualbox packages in the fedora repository. Does it
have some strange name?
And BTW, is there any good HowTo to get started with Virtual Box?

RPM security (a newbie question)
by "Stanisław T. Findeisen"
What does the process of installing new RPM package look like? There are
some commands that such package is allowed to execute, right?
What are RPMs allowed to do, and what is forbidden? Is there any control
layer at all in the package manager, or is the control (e.g., during
package install) simply transferred to RPM-package-provided script??
Also what's the difference between "Everything" and "Fedora" dirs in
Fedora package tree?
I wonder how easy it is to create a rootkit/trojan horse/whatever and
get it loaded on Fedora users' computers.
Thanks!
