F10: sound vanishing after some time (Dell E6500)
by wwp
Hello there,
not sure it is pulseaudio to blame yet (and again), maybe simply an
Alsa bug or incompatibility. I've recently installed Fedora 10 on a
brand new Dell Latitude E6500 laptop.
Few hours after the system has booted (an unpredictable amount of time)
sounds are simply not playing anymore - tried w/ apps, aplay, mplayer.
Did somebody experience the same? Or any clue where to investigate or
find a fix?
I'm running GNOME and default sound settings (pulseaudio, alsa), here
are some excerpts of `lspci -vvv` concerning the audio system:

Force to update to f10, but yum can't bring it into synch.
by Gene Heskett
Greetings;
I killed x trying to make this )*(&%$ video card work so I put the f10 dvd in
and updated it to F10.
Two immediate problems.
1. Grub must have miss-fired, all I get is the grub shell and I have to enter
all the boot data line by line in order to boot. Is that a fresh grub-
install?
2. Yum wants to update 435 packages, but many dependencies stop it. What is
the f10 procedure to bring that up to speed now?

Cheers, Gene

Obviously I've messed up something in configuration but I haven't been

Account, password problem with sqlplus in Oracle 10g(10201_companion_linux32)
by gmspro
Hi,
I installed Oracle 10g(10201_companion_linux32.zip).
After extracting got companion directory.
Installing going to that directory "/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/bin"
I ran ./sqlplus command.
But now I can't type the user name and password because everything is denied.
When installing ,I selected companion option as I got an error selecting the Oralce 10g Database option.I was not prompted for account and password.
There was an option during installation for
i)Wschema
ii)hostname
iii)port
iv)sid
like this.
Now what should I do?Is there any option for creating account and password?
Can anyone tell?
I am using Fedora 10.
Thanks

FC, Samba, and permissions problems
by Gary Stainburn
I've just set up a new FC9 system with Samba and I'm having a problem
I've set security to share, and then set up the following share
[reef]
comment = Reef shared folder
path = /user/remote/reef
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes
valid users = gary
force user = gary
I've also got the matching directory structure
ls -ld / /user /user/remote/ /user/remote/reef/
drwxr-xr-x 22 root root 4096 2009-02-24 18:17 /
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2009-02-24 17:26 /user
drwxr-xr-x 3 gary gary 4096 2009-02-24 17:26 /user/remote/
drwxr-xr-x 2 gary gary 4096 2009-02-24 17:26 /user/remote/reef/
However, when I try to access it from a WinXP machine I get the following
error both on the Windows PC and the Samba logs.
[2009/02/25 10:29:40, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(1156)

printout sending control codes to the console?

I have a script which prints out some data to the terminal, which I keep

Often times I see indecipherable characters printed out and the output

Is there a way to prevent this?

has K3B been abandoned?
by Fred Silsbee
K3b is a piece of work...
I have 2 CD/DVD burner drives
Plextor $120+
Sony $50
Fedora doesn't like the Plextor...I guess
after downloading F10 for 9.5 hours, I tried to burn a ISO-DVD.
The simplest operation?
I wasted 4 blanks making 3 final copies that haved been checked to be good!.
The Plextor would get an error and then hang K3B
I'd kill it with kill -9 and then the drive would be locked up and even hung the eject command.
I had to reboot to open the drive. Sometimes I have to reboot to do a second operation!
and even once the "bring things back" facility had the #$%& thing running again.
OH YES! an old error reported forever
When making an ISO DVD, the verify write facility still doesn't work
even on the Sony drive. It says "couldn't find a DVD to verify.
Make things easy: if there is an error:
(1) release the drive announcing ithat the DVD is no longer blank!
(2) eject the DVD
(3) terminate all processes and subprocesses that stay running(i.e. die and go away)
(4) work on the program some more.
