Local cache / 'repo' of updates and added RPM's
by JayLinux
I had to re-install Fedora 10 on a home desktop PC. In regard to this:
Is it possible to have a local cache/ "repository" of all
1) Updates (Critical, Security, Bug-fixes), and
2) Additional installed rpm's (that were installed through PackageKit), e.g.
Opera, Adobe Reader, etc.
so that I do not have to download all those again (800 MB + D/L)
This would be similar to the 'aptonCD' package in Ubuntu (
http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/)
APTonCD is a tool with a graphical interface which allows you to create one
> or more CDs or DVDs (you choose the type of media) with all of the packages
> you've downloaded via APT-GET or APTITUDE, creating a removable repository
> that you can use on other computers.
> APTonCD will also allow you to automatically create media with all of your
> .deb packages located in one specific repository, so that you can install
> them into your computers without the need for an internet connection.
Thanks,
Jay

changing GDM background image on F12
by Fred Smith
Hi!
I've looked thru the forums and done some googling but I don't see an
answer THAT WORKS for this question:
How to change the default GDM background/wallpaper to some other image?
I've tried all the things listed in the forums and none of them works,
including (but not limited to) copying the image I want into
/usr/share/backgrounds/images then running this command:
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source=xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults --set --type string "/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename" "/usr/share/backgrounds/images/Fistmaster.FullHD.0190.jpg"
having done that either log off or reboot and voila! no change at all! :(
Thanks in advance.

Issue setting KDE resolution - Fedora 12, ATI, Dell Inspiron 8600
by Lets Go Canes
Hi all.
Installed Fedora 12 on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop, dual-boot with Windows
XP. I want to use a different resolution than what KDE comes up with by
default (default is ~1900x~1200, I want 1280x800). However, the KDE tool
for changing resolution doesn't appear to do anything. I googled around,
and found suggestions for using xrandr; that attempts to change the
resolution, but the only working, usable resolution with this method
appears to be the default. The desired resolution works under Windows XP.
Any suggestions?

PPPoE over WLAN
by Andreas Waldenburger
Hi there,
the network at my university requires me to first connect to the WLAN
and then use PPPoE to actually use the intertubes. Connecting to the
WLAN itself works flawlessly (*hem*), the PPPoE though is a bit
troublesome.
I first tried setting this up via the DSL tab in Gnome's NetworkManager,
but that didn't work. The connection is listed (not very surprisingly)
under the wired networks, not under the wireless ones. I tried to be
sneaky and entered my wlan-adapter's MAC address in the "wired" tab,
but that only made the entry disappear from the network listing
entirely (in the menu that you see when you left-click the
notification icon).
I did manage to set up the connection by running pppoe-setup as root.
And although I did configure it to start at system boot, this doesn't
happen. So now I have to run ifup as root every time I want to connect
to the internet. To make things more annoying the WLAN connection
disconnects somewhat frequently (lousy administration), prompting me do
do ifdown and ifup each time that happens.
Any way to have this PPPoE connection up automatically, preferably via
NetworkManager? Any help is much appreciated.

problems with system-config-display and crtl-alt-backspace
by Paul Allen Newell
To all:
Installed f12 without any problems.
Discovered that crtl-alt-backspace was disabled in f12 and how I could
edit my xorg.conf to restore that feature.
Searched Fedora f12 web pages and they told me to install
system-config-display to create an xorg.conf that matched the default
that the opSys was using. Worked great and, to use the cliché, "groovy"
Reboot system and it immediately hangs after that cute little Fedora
icon finishes to say that it booted. Just hangs and hangs. To use the
cliché again, "not groovy".
I figure I have no choice but to reinstall (what's a few hours between
friends (grumble)) ... but would like to know the proper (which may be
not documented) way to restore "crtl-alt-backspace" to kick the X.
I have three computer on a KVM and I often need to kick one of them if
it boots up and the KVM isn't directed at it cause its on one of the
others.. I've never understood why X has to actually connect to the
monitor to be correct, but X is pretty near a black box as far as I am
concerned (sigh).
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Triple monitor/dual card issues with F12.
by Jason Ish
After upgrading to F12 and trying out Nouveau, it doesn't appear that it
supports multiple nvidia video cards which means I need to drop back to the
nvidia blob drivers, fair enough. However, once I get that up and running X
locks up while gnome loads. Its fine with multiple displays on one card,
its when I enable the output on the second card that things go back.
So far I've been unable to get anything out of the logs - even if I ssh in
while X is locked, there is nothing there of interest.
Anyone have any ideas? I'd be happy to use Nouveau if I could just get a
second X session out of it. Would work fine for me since I generally run a
virtual machine full screen on one of the 3 displays.
Anyone running into similar issues?
Thanks.

PIK microcontroller development issues
by Howard Howell
Hi, everyone,
I don't know if anyone here is working with PIC micros, but I am
working on several projects, which I wanted to move the PIKLAB and SDCC
with the GPSIM simulator.
So far I have gotten PIKLAB to load and apparently work with SDCC, but
gpsim is fighting me tooth and nail. I cannot get it integrated with
PIKLAB the way I expected.
So far I have added the following to my F11 system:
gpsim
gpsim-devel
gtk+* packages to get the basics of gtk+ and the extended packs
PIKLAB of course
SDCC
SDCC-devel
KDEbase (although I run Gnome)
Ktechlab (needed to get some bits of gpsim I discovered in a web crawl)
gputil
I can compile programs, but so far gpsim doesn't recognize the
processor. This is as of today after adding KDEbase.
gpsim seems to run OK, but doesn't find some of its require fonts, or
any of the processor files either. I tried invoking gpsim with gpsim
-pp16f887 FreqCounter.hex (my file) but it couldn't find the processor
or fonts. I am sure I can eventually sort out the fonts, but the other
stuff is more perplexing. The packages were loaded from the
system->Administration->Add/Remove software operation.
Here is the message sequence from the command line invocation:
$: gpsim -pp16f887 FreqCounter.asm
gpsim - the GNUPIC simulator

Unable to find processor
cmd_load::load hex file FreqCounter.asm
cmd_load:: load hex, Processor not defined
**gpsim>
I tried to figure out where gpsim figures out its processors, and it
seems that the processors are loaded as a shared object file ".so" from
the gpsim-devel package. I have not yet been successful in discovering
where that package is currently located on my system. I tried a "find .
gp*.so -print" from the root directory, but had no success.
So my questions:
1. how should I proceed to discover any or all of the following:
A. shared object file name
B. install paths
C. errors being generated if they don's show up in the gpsim windows
(clearly the cause of not quoting error messages here other than the one
that gpsim couldn't find the processor which appears in two different
forms depending on how I invoke it).
2. A process to get gpsim working on Fedora (this seems to be a F11
issue because I have had little luck finding solutions on the web
despite working on this for weeks.)
3. Once past 1 and 2, integrating the works for F11.
Maybe I can get some of you interested in neat microcontroller
programming. These little mcpus are really quite powerful and neat for
all kinds of jobs.
Thanks for any and all help,

I could deal with it. But the event doesn't fire at all so I have no

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

installing to external disk: esata now!
by Paul Johnson
I've got several bootable usb installs of Centos, Fedora and Ubuntu.
All work great now, I think i understand all the details about drive
labeling, getting the initrd correct, and so forth. I was active in
this list back in the Fedora 4 and 5 days, when these things were
getting ironed out. Examples of the old posts (The COMPLETE guide to
installing Linux Fedora Core 5 on your external HD,
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-119764.html,
On one of the external drives, I have esata port as well, and finally
a new PC arrived that has an esata port built in. I've not tried this
with Fedora 11 yet, but I have one running Centos-5.4, the external
drive can boot from the USB connection, and while running, the esata
drive is recognized and can be mounted easily. However, when I
disconnect the USB and boot from the esata connection, the boot fails
in a kernel panic because the /root drive cannot be found. I believe
this is the exact same problem that afflicted efforts to boot from USB
in the past, before we learned about adding the usb-storage modules
into the mkinitrd command. Remember those days?
Anyway, I wonder if anybody knows what modules are needed in the
initrd in order to boot from an esata drive. Currently, for the USB
boot, the modules needed are specified in /etc/modprobe.conf, they
are:
alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix
alias scsi_hostadapter1 usb-storage
If one of you knows the similar recipe for esata, I would very much
appreciate it.
