FreeNX on fc9.x86_64
by V Pomerol
After crossing several obstacles in getting FreeNX to work on
fc9.x86_64 I still cannot get it to run, and I would appreciate any
help on this issue.
Here is what I already did:
1. put SELinux in permissive mode (this resolved an authentication
issue reported by the freenx client, damn selinux!)
2. I followed the instructions in the following bugzilla comment
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=446816#c11). I now have
the following two packages installed:
$ rpm -qa | grep nx
nx-3.2.0-27.fc9.i386
freenx-server-0.7.2-8.fc9.i386
3. I installed xfs and manually started the service in runlevel 3.
I can now finally run nxnode on the server. Executing
'/usr/libexec/nx/nxnode --agent' on the server produces the following
errors:
------------------------

Does anyone have any idea on how to proceed in resolving this remaining issue?

Problems with ath5k and Madwifi drivers
by Giovanni Cucca
Hi all,
I have a problem with wireless not working on my laptop.
I have an Atheros card, but neither ath5k nor Madwifi drivers are
working.
[oneiros@sincity ~]$ /sbin/lspci |grep Atheros
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x
802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
When using the ath5k driver, it will bring up wlan0, but then is
incapable of scanning for network, or even to manually connect to known
ESSIDs. If I deactivate and reactivate wireless in NetworkManager, I
have those messages in /var/log/messages:
Jul 31 03:32:35 sincity NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): device state
change: 3 -> 2
Jul 31 03:32:35 sincity NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): deactivating
device.
Jul 31 03:32:35 sincity NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): taking down
device.
Jul 31 03:32:38 sincity NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): bringing up
device.
Jul 31 03:32:38 sincity kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not
ready
Jul 31 03:32:38 sincity NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): device state
change: 2 -> 3
If I use the madwifi drivers, I get this error at the startup:
Avvio del demone Avahi... Timeout reached while waiting for return value
Could not receive return value from daemon process [FALLITO]
then it tries to load cups and there it hungs forever.
How can I bring up wireless?
Giovanni

f9 kerneloops
by David L
I noticed my f9 system was slow and checked CPU usage with top.
top showed a process called kerneloops sucking 98% of the CPU.
Is this normal? If not, what is one supposed to do to provide debugging
info?

Wireless LAN cards for Fedora?
by Colin Paul Adams
I want to connect an AMD64 machine (currently running 32-bit Fedora
Core 6, although I might upgrade to Fedora 9 64-bit or 32-bit) to a
wireless LAN. Can I just buy any cheap wireless LAN card, or are there
gotchas to be aware of?

Two different users on the same machine
by Paul Smith
Dear All,
I am running XFCE on F9, and I would like to know how to allow two
different users to login on my machine at the same time. On F8, I
remember a menu entry
System --> New Login
but I cannot find it on F9.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Re: give me my sound back!

another thread on the same issue, I think.
"pulseaudio does not start after kernel update"
I updated kernel of F8 and lost sound. I know that most reports here
concern F9.

cron job
by tony.chamberlain@lemko.com
Output from nightly cronjobs is filling root's mailbox quickly,
and sending everything else to /var/spool/mqueue. These are just
status messages (stdout) from the cronjobs which we don't really need
mailed to root. Is there anyway to suppress mailings?

Can NTFS r/w support be built into the initrd?
by Richard Shaw
I'm trying to get to some files on an NTFS partition at boot time and
tried searching all over google with very limited success. It seems
the ntfs.ko module does not support read/write well and the ntfs-3g
module uses fuse.
Is it possible to get fuse built into my initrd with ntfs support?
Also, I consider myself an advanced linux user but not quite an
expert, so I'm not really sure how best to modify the initrd. Are
there any helper tools or am I stuck doing the gz/cpio, changing
files, cpio/gz it back up method?
Thanks,
Richard
