Fedora 9 + Network Manager = Wireless NOT Connecting
by Marc Ferguson
Hi,
*I would like to know if anyone is having problems getting their wireless
connection to actually connect in Fedora 9 using Network Manager?*
I just installed Fedora 9 on my laptop (Thinkpad R40). I did not do the 76
updates yet, but out-of-the-box, my wireless won't connect. The LAN
connects just fine, but not wireless. It's great that network manager does
an auto broadcast, now. I put in my WEP information, which I
triple-checked, but it says the connection has disconnected. I even tried
it on WEPless access points and the same thing happens.
*Skill-set:* I am a linux noob so I do not fully understand all the terms
or concepts yet. I am a Windows power-user, but as you all know that
doesn't mean squat with a REAL operating system. Thanks for your help.

testing hardware - use what software ?
by Development discussions related to Fedora
I have a PC that is failing intermittently. What are the best choice for
attempting to pinpoint a hardware fault - in terms of either fedora
packaged or other open sourcesoftware ?
Perhaps there is something that can both perform one of and 'to death'
tests of various PC components, and components in combination, and also
provide peak workload for all subsystems at once, in an attempt to
generate a slow to occur failure.
I know about memtest, and read-only disk tests from fsck. Any others ?

PGP signatures.
by Mikkel
I wish people sign their messages using PGP would make sure to
upload their public key to one of the key servers. While it does not
prove you are who you say you are, it would indicate that all the
signed messages are from the same person. Without your public key,
we have no way to check.

ssh to a remote server via gateway server
by L
Hi,
I routinely login a remote server via a 'gateway' machine. For example, I
need to login to PC B using ssh. But this PC B is behind a firewall.ssh port
on PC A is open.
As a result, I have to login PC A via ssh, then ssh PC B from PC A.
Is there ssh command line option that I can directly ssh to PC B?
Thanks

F9 - DPMS not working
by John Horne
Hello,
Using F9, with KDE 4.0.4 desktop, my LCD display never seems to enter
power-saving mode. I have a screensaver configured to kick in after 5
mins, and that works fine. The Xorg log file shows that DPMS is enabled,
as does 'xset -q'. Running 'xset dpms force off' (or standy/suspend) and
the screen turns off, so it can do it. I have left the system for nearly
an hour, but the monitor is still on. This occurred under the vesa
driver, but I have today installed the latest Nvidia drivers and the
problem still exists. F8, using the same hardware, had no such problem.
Any ideas, suggestions?
Thanks,
John.

Firefox about:plugins reports "everything" is installed,
except for mozplugger claiming that it was not even
configured. I yum removed this, tried again - no
dice. But further testing reveal that MOST SWF files
worked - just that some do not. Different versions
of SWF are not compatable?

Is it possible that there are some SWF files that are
not playable? For the most part, I guess I was wrong
in general - it seems to work for many different SWF
versions, but there were some that simply does not
work?

Using mencoder, dvdauthor and burning a DVD iso - what went wrong in the process ?
by Mark Ryden
Hello,
I tried several times to convert an an avi to a DVD and than to burn
it and try to play it on a DVD player (no a PC dvd).
The result is that I have to make many attemps to try to insert the
media inside the DVD and wait. After many such attempts is start correctly.
This happened to me with more than one media. However, I must say that the DVD
itslef is brand new and from good quality and it plays DVD without any
problem.
Could it be that something in the process is incorrect or there is a better way
to do it ?
What I do is this:
I have movie.avi.
I run:
mencoder -oac lavc -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd -vf
scale=720:576,harddup -srate 48000 -af lavcresample=48000 -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg2video:vstrict=1:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=5000:keyint=15:acodec=ac3:abitrate=192:aspect=4/3
-ofps 25 -o movie.mpg /work/down/mov/homeAlone1/movie.avi
than I use dvdauthor, in this way:
dvdauthor -o dvdFolder -x dvd.xml
whereas the dvd.xml is this:
<dvdauthor>
<vmgm />
<titleset>
<titles>
<pgc>
<vob file="movie.mpg" />
</pgc>
</titles>
</titleset>
</dvdauthor>
Now, under dvdFolder, two folders are created: AUDIO_TS VIDEO_TS
and everything is OK. When I try to play the result with vlc, by
running File->Open Directiry and navigate to the VIDEO_TS, everything
is perfect.
Now , I create an .iso, in this way:
mkisofs -o movie.iso -dvd-video pathTodvdFolder.
The I burn this movie.iso with k3b ( By tools->Burn DVD iso from k3b).
When I try to play the DVD media I burned with the PC DVD - it is perfectly OK.
When I try to play the DVD media with a non-PC DVD (a good quality DVD
which is connected to
a TV), I have problems as depicted above. It does not play it
immediately. I have
to try 5 or more time to insert the DVD and pull it out and again, untill it
starts.
Any ideas what is wrong in this process?

Fedora 9 - Wireless SUCCESS - Use TKIP, not AES
by John Wendel
After several hours of fiddling with the non-working wireless network in
my new Fedora installation, I noticed in the log file a list of
supported security modules - and "WPA - AES" wasn't in the list.
So, I changed my router to use "WPA - TKIP" instead of "WPA - AES". I
then restarted the box, and got an perfect wireless connection.
It would really be nice if the #$$%%# software would have mentioned that
it doesn't support "AES".

Rhythmbox and Exaile Silent
by das
Hello Friends
After last night's update, both on the laptop and the desktop Rhythmbox
and Exaile on Fedora 9 can't play audio anymore. And on both the
machines 'mplayer' (compiled) can play them.
When run from a terminal, Rhythmbox is giving this message:
<<
(rhythmbox:3211): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player
keys: Method "GrabMediaPlayerKeys" with signature "su" on interface
"org.gnome.SettingsDaemon" doesn't exist
>>
And Exaile is giving this:
<<

which: no brasero in (/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/lib/ccache:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/dd/bin)

Gnome is there, but, Xfce was the running desktop when it happened. And
on the laptop I tried it by starx-ing into Gnome too, with the same
result. Tried 'yum erase' and 'yum install' once again. No results.
Any help anyone? Or, it is a temporary thing, likely to get corrected
in some coming update?
