I am using a Brother MFC665CW wirelessly at home and it is a nice
machine. The setup involves at least TWO drivers.
Start here: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html
You will first install the lpr driver for your model, then the CUPS
wrapper, (and you can, if you want, and the machine supports it, add a
SANE driver for scanning, and a PC-FAX driver, for using the machine as
a PC-fax machine.
In your case, presuming that you actually have the DCP-340CW, (not
DCP-3400W) you will be looking for the MFC-210C drivers as a substitute.
On each driver page, there are dense lists of models with a link to
the driver page. Rather hard to read.
You need to have lpr running on your computer, first of all. Since this
is part of the printing group package, it should already be installed.
Then select, download and install (in your case) the MFC-210C lpr
driver/rpm (the DCP-340CW uses this driver).
Click on the LPR link and then find the MFC-210C download link, then
select .,...well, you've done that before I'm sure...
Install the rpm which you find in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Then, Back up 2 or 3 pages and select the CUPS wrapper driver link, in
the same way, and follow it down the garden path, again...
Install the rpm..
NOW, you can open your KDE oe Gnome menu and select 'Administration ->
Printing' and 'New Printer'. You do really need a static address (as you
have done) to make this work, as the printer is defined by a URL of the
form: lpd://192.168.100.99/binary_p1. Call it want you want, and
select the correct printer when asked.
Note that you will likely have to set up the printer AT THE PRINTER END,
for the static IP address you have selected. Although it is supposed to
be possible to do it with DHCP, I have never been able to make that
work..as the IP always moves as things are powered up and down..

yum --skip-broken breaks my heart.
by ramachandranc1@aim.com
"yum --skip-broken update" command brings up with? 1188 updates/install (this accumulation due to previous failures) and 2 remove. All downloaded. At the end two items* not found and the whole operation aborted.
I tried to install those 2 items, not found anywhere.

why can't I set power management to min power?
by sean darcy
On F8 updated to today:
# echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy
# cat /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy
max_performance
Tried both on and off ac.
System > Preferences > System > Power Management doesn't set it.
I'd expect to be able to set it separately for battery and ac, but it
seems I can't set it at all.
Any suggestions?

Been like this foe a few days.
Any suggestions how to fix this? (I'm currently working around it with
--exclude=namazu).

Does FC really recommends Re-install instead of upgrade?
by Mustafa Qasim
Hello!
Is it just a myth or really people frequently face problems in
upgrading FC so they just re-install it. In some other Linux list one said
that Fedora recommends to Re-install instead of upgrade. Is it true? . And
what is the ratio and most common reasons that cause the problems people
face while upgrading FC to new release.
Well for me I haven't tried upgrade I just reinstall FC but now i'll try to
upgrade and see if I encounter any problems.

No mic recorded on Acer TravelMate 5510 (Realtek ALC883)
by Ambrogio De Lorenzo
Hi all,
I can't record from a mic (internal or external) on my laptop running
Fedora Core 8 64bit, and alsa from standard repos as shown above:
alsa-lib.x86_64 1.0.15-1.fc8 installed
alsa-lib.i386 1.0.15-1.fc8 installed
alsa-lib-devel.x86_64 1.0.15-1.fc8 installed
alsa-tools.i386 1.0.12-4.fc7 installed
alsa-tools.x86_64 1.0.12-4.fc7 installed
alsa-utils.x86_64 1.0.15-1.fc8 installed
alsa-utils.i386 1.0.15-1.fc8 installed
alsamixergui.x86_64 0.9.0-0.3.rc1.fc8.2 installed
bluez-utils-alsa.x86_64 3.20-6.fc8 installed
As there seems there aren't solutions I would like to know if:
Someone use the same laptop and have mic working well?
There is a way to obtain the new alsa 1.0.16 working from repos
(development) without a lot of changes, or is better to recompile from
scratch ?
Tnx
Ambrogio
