Where is modprobeconf
by Aaron Konstam
I just noticed there is no modprobe.conf in f9. What takes its place?

nfs or acl?
by Michael Weiner
Dear list readers -
Having an interesting problem that i cannot seem to find a good answer for,
so i thought i would throw it out to the list and maybe learn something in
the process. I have an unusual issue on an auto-mounted over NFS data
directory. The users are complaining that they get permission problems when
copying files in their own directories, and when i took a look from one of
the workstations that had the data directory mounted, at first things
appeared ok, i saw what i would expect to see, example:
drwxr-sr-x 2 yangj2 qinlab 98 Jun 2 20:08 PDB_files
-rw-r--r-- 1 yangj2 qinlab 4567 Jan 18 2008 prompt.txt
drwxr-sr-x 2 yangj2 qinlab 6 Apr 10 2007 .qt
-rw-r--r-- 1 yangj2 qinlab 111789 Aug 13 12:21 Restraints.py.pdf
drwxr-sr-x 18 yangj2 qinlab 18 Oct 16 11:43 Scripts
drwxr-sr-x 7 yangj2 qinlab 7 Aug 4 2006 Setup_Files
drwxr-sr-x 8 yangj2 qinlab 34 Aug 21 13:13 Test
drwx--S--- 3 yangj2 qinlab 3 Apr 3 2007 .thumbnails
drwxr-sr-x 2 yangj2 qinlab 2 Oct 31 16:39 Transfer
-rw-r--r-- 1 yangj2 qinlab 2 May 10 2005 update_20060201
-rw------- 1 yangj2 qinlab 5703 Apr 10 2007 .viminfo
-rw------- 1 yangj2 qinlab 160 Apr 10 2007 .Xauthority
*note: that is from a fedora core 2 machine*.
But when i took a look from another one of their machines mounting the exact
same share, i see the following:
drwxr-sr-x+ 2 yangj2 qinlab 98 2008-06-02 20:08 PDB_files
-rw-r--r--+ 1 yangj2 qinlab 4567 2008-01-18 15:59 prompt.txt
drwxr-sr-x+ 2 yangj2 qinlab 6 2007-04-10 13:50 .qt
-rw-r--r--+ 1 yangj2 qinlab 111789 2008-08-13 12:21 Restraints.py.pdf
drwxr-sr-x+ 18 yangj2 qinlab 18 2008-10-16 11:43 Scripts
drwxr-sr-x+ 7 yangj2 qinlab 7 2006-08-04 15:49 Setup_Files
drwxr-sr-x+ 8 yangj2 qinlab 34 2008-08-21 13:13 Test
drwx--S---+ 3 yangj2 qinlab 3 2007-04-03 16:56 .thumbnails
drwxr-sr-x+ 2 yangj2 qinlab 2 2008-10-31 16:39 Transfer
-rw-r--r--+ 1 yangj2 qinlab 2 2005-05-10 15:20 update_20060201
-rw-------+ 1 yangj2 qinlab 5703 2007-04-10 14:38 .viminfo
-rw-------+ 1 yangj2 qinlab 160 2007-04-10 14:56 .Xauthority
*note: that is from a fedora 7 machine.*
The mount is auto-mounted over nfs from a Solaris 10 x86 running ZFS. What
is puzzling me is the '+' character in the permissions, which i am honestly
unfamiliar with. After a little digging i believe this is indicative of some
extended ACL that is applied somewhere but i cant seem to determine where.
Its not the older FC boxes, i dont THINK its the solaris box, and i am
hedging a bet its the F7 boxes, but not sure at this point exactly what it
is. Is it NFSv4, or something else? And how can i remove that set bit from
the files and directories. Not sure if thats really the problem, but on
systems that i DONT see that '+' we dont have the problem.
Any direction or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Announcing Fedora Classroom Sessions
by Kevin Fenzi
I thought I would post here for those that haven't seen the
announcement about classroom sessions yet:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-November/msg0000...
(and do consider taking a few minutes now to subscribe to
fedora-announce).
A few things to add to the announcement:
We will be logging these classroom IRC sessions and putting them up on
the fedoraproject.org wiki. So, if you are unable to attend you can
take a look at the logs at your leasure.
We will be holding another set of classes in december, which will be
stagged so that folks in other timezones will have a better chance to
attend. See the wiki page for more details.
Hope to see lots of folks there!

F8 dependency hell with avahi
by Beartooth
I'm running F8 on a T30 thinkpad. Whenever I try to do yum
update, I get :
===== ===== ===== =====
Is this ok [y/N]: y

Running rpm_check_debug

I've tried everything I can think of to update or get rid of that
avahi-0.6.17-1.fc7.i386 with the "fc7" in it, and nothing I know works.
Pirut did claim to have removed it; but yum update still failed the same.
What do I do, while I still can? Yum wants to change 124
packages, including replacing a kernel.

gdm error messages
by Steve Blackwell
I was looking through /var/log/messages and I came accross this error :
gconfd (gdm-2770): Error setting value for `/apps/gnome-screensaver/power_management_delay': Can't overwrite existing read-only value: Value for `/apps/gnome-screensaver/power_management_delay' set in a read-only source at the front of your configuration path
My home directory has no read, write or execute permissions for anybody besides me so the error message is no that suprising.
After a bit of googling I found a suggested solution of setting umask to 027 in /etc/init.d/functions but that interfered with loggng in resulting in no taskbar.
I decided to try adding my user group to gdm's group list and changing the permissions in my home directory structure to allow anyone in my group to read, write or execute. I was suprised to find that this did not work. Is this because gdm doesn't have a login shell? I tried adding my group to a different user, logging on as that user and then writing to the gnome-screensaver directory and had no problems.
How else can I get this to work?
This is on a fully up-to-date F8 system.
Thanks,
Steve

Livna / RPMFusion updates
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I recently accepted an update of the Livna repository info from
livna-release-9-1.noarch to livna-release-9-2.noarch . This caused the
availability of a large number of updates from the RPMFusion repo.
Should I trust these updates? The GPG signature for the RPMFusion repo
is not right now installed.
Thanks - jon

X resource question on F9
by Steven W. Orr
This is complicated and I generally don't do well with complex problems
here, but let's give it a shot. :-(
I have an X resource question that relates to how the xrdb command
interplays with kdm/xdm.
I have two environment variables:
XUSERFILESEARCHPATH=/home/steveo/.app-defaults/%N%C
XFILESEARCHPATH=/usr/share/X11/app-defaults/%N%C
Also, I have a ~/.Xresources file which contains these two lines:
*customization: -color
*StringConversionWarnings: on
In my ~/.app-defaults I have a file called XTerm-color
When I log in using KDM, I can look at my RESOURCE_MANAGER property and I
can see along with a lot of other values:
533 > xrdb -query | egrep 'customization|StringConversion'
*StringConversionWarnings: on
*customization: -color
But the color settings I have in my ~/.app-defaults/XTerm-color are not
working and I don't have a clue why. But one thing I do see is that if
after I log in I say:
xrdb -load ~/.Xresources
then everything works just fine.
The goal is that I want my own resources to used when I run my app by
searching the classes specified in the two variables above.
Can someone help?

Fedora / RedHat - The problem
by Brian C. Huffman
Alright I hate Microsoft. I really do. But here I am at 11:45pm on
a Sunday night and my wife needs to print a paper for tomorrow.
My Fedora cups / samba server worked before and now it doesnt. Was
it an update that broke? I dunno. But this is why RedHat / Fedora is
never going to take the upper hand. Reboots on both platforms, a bunch
of tcpdumps and still no idea. No real user should have to go through
this. Sure Ill figure it out. But is that what someone wants when
theyve got a paper to print thats due tomorrow?
I dont think so.
