Fedora home server using core 9
by Darren Foster
Hi there,
I'm relatively new to the forum.
I have used fedora core 6-7-8 just in a Desktop environment not really
having anything technical to do with it.
So currently i am downloading fedora core 9 and want to use this as my home
server to store all of my music and data on. Eventually i want to be able
to run a blog from it and setup a mail server to work from this one box. So
what i am asking is if anyone knows of any good walkthroughs for setting any
of these up?
Regards,
Darren Foster

Uninstall
by mike
Is there a way to just flat uninstall FC 8. I need to make a
workstation match a customer configuration.
They use Ubuntu, which has the worst Installation program I have ever
seen. Thus I need to uninstall FC 8 to create open space. Partion
Magic from the XP partition craps the basket and claims it cannot even
find the drive letter.
I really would hate to buy a new machine just to match the customer
configuration.
Any help is appreciated.

Sending syslog to another machine
by Timothy Murphy
Could some kind soul please tell me how exactly
one can send syslog to another machine.
Am I right in deducing that syslog has been replaced by rsyslog?
If so, I do not understand the instructions at the end
of /etc/rsyslog.conf , which I assume are intended for remote logging:
---------------------------------------------------
# ### begin forwarding rule ###
# The statement between the begin ... end define a SINGLE forwarding
# rule. They belong together, do NOT split them. If you create multiple
# forwarding rules, duplicate the whole block!
# Remote Logging (we use TCP for reliable delivery)
#
# An on-disk queue is created for this action. If the remote host is
# down, messages are spooled to disk and sent when it is up again.
#$WorkDirectory /var/spppl/rsyslog # where to place spool files
#$ActionQueueFileName fwdRule1 # unique name prefix for spool files
#$ActionQueueMaxDiskSpace 1g # 1gb space limit (use as much as possible)
#$ActionQueueSaveOnShutdown on # save messages to disk on shutdown
#$ActionQueueType LinkedList # run asynchronously
#$ActionResumeRetryCount -1 # infinite retries if host is down
# remote host is: name/ip:port, e.g. 192.168.0.1:514, port optional
#*.* @@remote-host:514
# ### end of the forwarding rule ###
---------------------------------------------------
I looked briefly at /usr/share/doc/rsyslog-3.21.3/
but there are 90 html files there
none of which seemed very likely to hold the required information.
I did not understand the README in this directory:
---------------------------------------------------
This file has been superseeded by the fils in the doc folder.
Please see doc/manual.html for futher details. If you are
looking for install information doc/install.html is for you!
If you do not have the doc set, see
http://www.rsyslog.com/doc
---------------------------------------------------
Where exactly is the doc folder?
I notice that there is no man entry for rsyslog
but there are man entries for syslog and rsyslog.conf .
I am very confused ...

Mirroring Fedora
by thomas cameron
Howdy -
I mirror Fedora 10 to my home server, and it eats up a *lot* of space.
It's not a big deal, I've got 500GiB drives in my file server but I'm
interested in keeping it as small as possible.
Currently I use these commands in a script in cron.daily to mirror:
echo Fedora 10 Updates
echo
rsync -va --exclude=debug --numeric-ids --delete --delete-after \
rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/updates/10/i386 \
/var/www/html/pub/fedora/updates/10/i386/
echo Fedora 10 Updates
echo
until rsync -va --exclude=debug --numeric-ids --delete --delete-after \
rsync://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/updates/10/x86_64/ \
/var/www/html/pub/fedora/updates/10/x86_64/
The thing is, F10 is taking up like 50GiB of disk space between the
install media, Everything and updates.
I know that there are a ton of duplicate files between the i386 and the
x86_64 directories. Is there an easy way to do something like hard link
duplicate files or maybe a better way to rsync so that duplicate files
are considered?
Thanks!

Fedora 10 on Asus eee 701 feedback
by Valent Turkovic
I would just to drop a few comments on using Fedora 10 on my little Asus 701.
I'm impressed how well installation went and how it work nice in
fullscreen on eee's small 7" screen.
After installing I had issues with wireless and webcam. I can start
cheese and I can see the led turn on but I don't see anything in
cheese window.
Wireless worked out-of-the-box with new ath5k module and I could see
all networks and connected to my WPA network but I can't surf web
sites :(
I tried pinging my adls router and I get a lot of drop packages and
ping times over 2000ms :(
After compiling madwifi-hal and blacklisting ath5k wireless started
working perfectly.
I also tried "Connection sharing" with eee conected through wire and
created a new wireless connection for others to connect to. I tried
with one client to connect to asus eee AP but it also got a lot of
dropped packages :(
I posted a bug for this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=473576
Are there any asus eee users that have similar experience? Any
tips/tricks for us eee users?
Cheers,
Valent.

I just tried to add a folder view and I lost one of my panels and messed
up the other one pretty bad in the process.
Anyone else having this problem ?

Workstations shutting down for no apparent reason (F8)
by Alain Cochard
Hello. I am running 40 workstations with 3 kinds of hardware, all
under fedora 8. From time to time -- about once every 3 days -- one
of the machine (not always the same) shuts itself down. Otherwise
they are running 24 hours a day every day.
The excerpt of the /var/log/messages that seems relevant to me is
