Re: Java
by Gene Poole
I've been following these threads (Java Problem & Java Again Really) and I
think that some of the focus and direction has been lost. It's almost
become 'let me exert my will on you' situation.
If we ask ourselves 'Why is Fedora being built?' we will see that this
isn't a 'out of the box solution' for most users, nor is it a M$ desktop
replacement - yet. For that you need someone to make all of the choices
and decisions for you and we know who that is. As long as Linux remains a
'do it the way you want it to be done' operating system, there is no wrong
way to do things - if it works, only different ways to do things. If you
like the how and where the people who packages the extra pieces (and
remember that java, tomcat, eclipse, etc. are extra and not required to run
Fedora) provided, then go that direction. But if you decide you want to go
a different way, then pose your question here and someone will attempt to
give a way to do it - not tell you that you are wrong for not going the way
someone else has decided.
I chose a different direction for my 'extra' packages:
For Java, take a look at these documents:
http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/java-i386
http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/sun-jdk
Both of these are on the Fedora Solved site. I combined them to make
my working document.
There are others, but they are beyond the scope of these threads.
If anyone still doesn't think that there are Linux users attempting to
control how people do things, all that's required is for them to stand back
and read these threads.
Thanks,
Gene Poole

open a terminal session from the menu
change to root with the command
su -
folowed by the root password
enter the command for your favorite editor on the command line followed by an & to start it in a separate session. Type the following lines between the asterisks.
*************************************************************************
[fedora-disk]
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch
baseurl=file:///cdrom
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
*************************************************************************
Use the editors "save as" function to save what was typed to a file named
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.disk.repo
Put the fedora disk in the drive. If the automount window comes up on your desktop click on the
"do nothing" option.
In the terminal session enter the command string
mkdir /cdrom;mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom
All the packages on the CD will then be accessible with yum, yumex, package updater or kyum.

[F8] P5GC-MX/1333 and Attansic LAN. Anyone get this to work?
by Dan Thurman
Cripe.
I bought the ASUS P5GC-MX/1333 and the onboard LAN has to have
special drivers installed BEFORE you can access your LAN. Same
for the onboard audio and video stuff but seems that I can forego the
video stuff since my X11 is working fine at this time.
Well, guess what. You have to BUILD the driver first AND it has to be
compatable with the Kernel.
Using the LiveCD means I don't have all the necessary build tools
to even get started and alas, no, I do not have a DVD drive.
I guess, I will have to use an empty partition and FTP download everything
in it and pray that the Package Manager can be directed to use the local
filesystem for it's RPM?
Anyone have a better idea?

The mystery of WiFi
by Timothy Murphy
IIRC, Fedora - and other distributions -
tried to bring up the interface <xyz>
if there was a file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<xyz>.
But this no longer seems to be the case -
I have an ifcfg-eth0 which is completely ignored
by "service network restart" and even "ifup eth0".
How does Fedora now decide what interfaces to try to bring up?

RPMFusion - what is going on?
by Valent Turkovic
Does anybody have some info on when is RPMFusion repo scheduled to be
officially released to Fedora users?
I have read only announcements couple months ago on few blogs and
since then complete radio silence. What is going on with that project,
does anybody know?
Valent.

In my ~/.inputrc, I have,
set show-all-if-ambiguous on
I didn't realize it was possible (or maybe it's not) in some versions of
readline to not have the hyphens in the key.
Haa Haa. User error. I forgot the hyphens.
Thx so much.

Disk Partitioning questions
by Dan Thurman
I have finally gotten a SATA 300GB HD and plan to multiboot w2k, XP, and Fedora.
The question is, what is the best way to partition the drive?
What I plan so far is:
p1: w2k, 25GB
p2: XP, 25GB
p3: /boot, 100MB
p4: Extended
/, 100GB
/app1, 50GB
/app2, 50GB
/app3, rest of available space minus swap
swap 2GB
But when I use the F8-LiveCD and custom partitioning gui,
I cannot see where I can create the extended filesystem
in p4 before I can create the logical drives of /, /app1,
/app2, and /app3?
Is it sufficient to simply not choose the 'Force to be a
primary partition' for p4?
Thanks!

how is udev integrated in fedora or redhat?
by leilei175@gmail.com
Hi,
I have some question about the network device naming mechanism in redhat&fedora.
On my box with 2 on-board network interface and another 2 intel
network interface, the order of these four interfaces will change from
time to time.I mean sometimes the 2 on-board are eth0 eth1,sometimes
they are eth1 eth2.
I know I can use MAC address to fix the order.I'm just curious about
how could the order change boot by boot without any modification on
configuration or hardware.
could any one give some suggestion?
Thanks

Respin network installs via boot.iso
by Mike Chambers
Ok, I got the F8 respin dvd created, via jigdo, and all seems to be well
(haven't tried to install with it yet).
Now the question is, if I just wanted to use a boot.iso to burn to cd
and network install the newly created dvd, where do I get that from?
Will the updated one use the original boot.iso or do I need an updated
one?
