what happened to KPILOT in KDEPIM-3.5.6 (Fedora 6 update) ?
by Marcello M. Pavan
Greetings
KPILOT has been a staple app of mine for some time to sync my treo 650 with
Kontact. But suddenly is disappeared from the latest KDEPIM-3.5.6 in the
last Fedora Core 6 update (accesed via Yum).
can anyone tell me what is going on ? an exhaustive web search (including
Fedora forums and mailing lists) has yielded nothing so far.
your help is much appreciated, and very much required. life is tougher
without my Treo and Kontact in sync ...
cheers,
marcello

PXE and newer FC5/FC6 kernel problems
by "Paul-Erik Törrönen"
Hello,
I've been running for some time now a setup where I have a
tftp/dhcp/nfs-server and a diskless mediaplayer (stock Intel setup) on a
local network. The mediaplayer has done a PXE-boot from the server and
everything has been smooth. Both the server as well as the mediaplayer
have been running FC5 with the 2.6.17-1.2187 kernel. The tftpboot-stuff
has been created/managed with the system-config-netboot program.
However the more recent kernels have had a number of problems, some
still unsolved.
For starters, the newer kernels require that I define
ramdisk_blocksize=1024 as an additional boot-parameter.
At the moment I can get the FC5 mediabox to boot up with the new kernel,
but it now is unable to mount a number of directories, such as /var/lock
and /var/run, as readwrite. This of course wreaks havoc on the whole
functionality. The said directories are mentioned in the
snapshot/files-file, so there is something else broken in the whole
setup.
I also set up a basic FC6-installation to be booted from the server, but
using that installation to boot the mediaplayer fails at a separate
error. It complains that the /tftpboot/boot/mediaplayerfc6/root is not
mountable, although I can NFS-mount this fine from another workstation
in the same local network. Creating the FC6 setup on the server with the
system-config-netboot does not give any errors.
Neither case gives off any errors in the server logs
(messages/dmesg/secure).
I'm a bit stumped at this point so I would really appreciate if anyone
could give a hint where to look for next or whether I have missed
something obvious.

Installation woes on a DL320 G2
by Larry
Trying to get a FC6 install on a DL320 G2.
I get past the check media fine, then the problems start
The system is just hanging when trying to bring up the GUI installer OR
the text "gui"
If I go the standard install method then I get the cursor, but nothing else.
If I try text, I get a blue background but never any text or options.
I have tried
acpi=off apm=off, nofb,i8042.nomux, resolution=800x600(and 640x480 and
1024x768)
and the above options in about every combination I can think of.
If I go to any of the alternate shells I dont see any errors.
I have tried from DVD, CD, and even tried FC5.
I have used this DVD to install FC6 on 4 other machines so Its not a
media issue.
The machine does have an Ultra ATA-100 controller, however I see both
drives show up
I booted up an Ubuntu CD and it appears to be installing fine, however
I'm a Fedora Bigot!
I'm trying to go through the list to see if anyone else has reported
this, but thats a long process.
Googling for several hours hasn't led me anywhere either.
Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem and how I could fix it?
Appreciate any and all help.
Thanks, Larry

possibly hacked
by olga@urbantimes.net
Hi,
I wrote about kernel errors which somebody pointed out was because the
server was running out of memory.
Now I found the following which makes me think that that server may have
been compromized.
Here's what I get when I issued: netstat -nap
tcp 0 0 131.x.x.x:38423 72.x.x.x:80 ESTABLISHED 5226/ps x
tcp 0 0 131.x.x.x:38420 72.x.x.x:80 ESTABLISHED 5365/ps x
About a hundred instances of that program 'ps x' running.
Also here's what ps -ef produced:
apache 6323 1 0 10:30 ? 00:00:00 ps x
apache 6324 1 0 10:30 ? 00:00:00 ps x
apache 6326 1 0 10:30 ? 00:00:00 ps x
apache 6328 1 0 10:30 ? 00:00:00 ps x
apache 6330 1 0 10:30 ? 00:00:00 ps x
Again there are a lot of these?
Any insight anyone?
Thank you.

A firefox secret

For those who didn't want to get involved with my rant here is a firefox
secret that is worth knowing.

Now I will tell you a secret. If you go into about:config you will see
that the configuration:
browser.download.hide_plugins_without_extensions is set as true by
default. Only when it is set to false can you see what you want to see
in the: Edit->Preferences->downloads->view & Edit Actions.
With this set as true you are flying blind with plugins. Why does
fedora not distribute this with the configuration set properly. How would you
know about this?
