Notes 8 Client on F7 (or F8)
by Christopher A. Williams
Has anyone found the set of magic incantations that will enable you to
install Lotus Notes 8.0 on F7 (or F8T3)?
I've had nothing but nightmarish troubles getting any of it to work. All
of my on-line searches of archives have also turned up nothing.
Cheers,
Chris

broken yum after latest yum update
by Konstantin Svist
After updating my F8 install with "yum update" I can't run yum anymore.
Here's the error I get:
"""
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules
required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:
/usr/lib/python2.5/lib-dynload/cPickle.so: undefined symbol:
PyUnicodeUCS4_DecodeRawUnicodeEscape
Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.
It's possible that the above module doesn't match the
current version of Python, which is:
2.5 (trunk, Nov 28 2007, 11:58:41)
[GCC 4.1.2 20070925 (Red Hat 4.1.2-33)]
If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:
http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq
"""
It doesn't look like anyone else has this problem (or I would've seen
other reports..)
Running python in command line and importing cPickle doesn't work
(same/similar error).
I've tried reinstalling python from fedora rpm (same version) - to no avail.
SELinux is running in permissive mode (meaning it should not have
blocked anything while I was performing the yum update). There *was*
some error/warning message in yum - something to do with some selinux
flag no longer being used, but that's all.
Another clue: I've installed a self-compiled python in /usr/local.
However, I was careful to not make it conflict with the built-in
version: I used the configure option to give the executable a suffix (so
the executable has to be called as "python.foobar" instead of just
"python"). I've verified that running the different python installs used
different lib directories (so that should not have been a problem.)
I've also tried running my custom python and importing cPickle - that
works without a problem.
Any ideas?
I guess I could just replace cPickle.so with the custom-built one, but
I'm not sure that's the best course of action...
Will it even be compatible? I probably used compile flags different from
default.

Wireless problem on F8 -- can't access secured networks
by Tom Stewart
I've installed F8 on an IBM ThinkPad R40 with an IBM High Rate
wireless card. The wireless card is recognized as an Atheros AR5212.
NetworkManager starts up fine, and I can connect to unencrypted AP's
OK (like my neighbor's), but I can't connect to protected networks
(like mine).
I've previously had Windows XP then Ubuntu on this box, and neither
had a problem connecting, so I am pretty confident that it's not a
hardware/compatibility issue. I've configured wpa_supplicant to run
via Service Configuration, which tells me that it is running. WPA
passphrases seem to get stored in the keyring OK.
In attempting to troubleshoot this, here's what I've discovered. When
booting, there is a fairly long delay, which causes the Details window
to pop up automatically. The delay is in starting wpa_supplicant, and
in fact, an error is noted:
Starting wpa_supplicant: /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, ,
dbus_bus_get[ctrl_iface_dbus]: No such file or directory
Now, there is a file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, owned by
root and with rw permissions for owner. I haven't touched this, and I
assume it is correct. So I wonder if the dbus_bus_get[ctrl_iface_dbus]
is the thing that's complaining. Searching on that string yields [1]
some source code:
/* Get a reference to the system bus */
dbus_error_init(&error);
iface->con = dbus_bus_get(DBUS_BUS_SYSTEM, &error);
dbus_error_free(&error);
if (!iface->con) {
perror("dbus_bus_get[ctrl_iface_dbus]");
wpa_printf(MSG_ERROR, "Could not acquire the system bus.");
goto fail;
}
which looks like it might print that string followed by an error, but
then it should also be displaying (somewhere?) the "Could not acquire
the system bus." which I haven't found.
The other data point I have is that in the system log, when attempting
to connect, I see the following error msg:
Nov 18 20:56:29 think NetworkManager: <info> Device 'wlan0' DHCP
transaction took too long (>45s), stopping it.
Can anyone help me get my wireless up and running on this guy? Where
do I go next?

GNOME & Evolution's calendar problem
by Renich Bon Ciric
Hola, fedorians!
Any idea why, when I click on X day number on the gnome calendar,
located on the top right corner of my fedora 8's GNOME installation,
opens up (X - 1) date on the Evolution calendar?
Who does this bug belong to? GNOME or Evolution? Is it a bug? x86_64
fedora 8 installation here...
btw, this bug has been around since Fedora 7...
If anyone confirms it, I'm filing it!

Fedora 8 - Evolution calendar problem
by Ambrogio De Lorenzo
Hi all,
I'm installed a fresh fedora 8, and I copied all my old home dir to this
new installation.
I started evolution, but when I receive an appointment, the program is
searching for an existent version of this appointment.
The accept and other buttons are grey and I can insert this appontment
to my calendar.
All appointment that was there before the installation are still there,
and I can schedule a new appointment.
Someone know what is appens?
Tnx

Video card for dual-head 1920x1200?
by Msquared
Hi, guys!
I'm looking for a video card that supports two 1920x1200 monitors using
open-source drivers under Xen on Fedora 8.
I currently have an nVidia 8500GT, but I'm having issues with dual-screen
under the open-source drivers, and the proprietary drivers don't support
Xen.
I have not yet purchased the 1920x1200 screens, as I wanted to make sure
that my card supported them first. Since I'm having so many problems with
the nVidia, I'm looking for an alternative card. The monitors I will most
likely purchase are 2 Samsung 245B.
Regards, Msquared...

Mysteries of openldap
by Timothy Murphy
I'm running openldap on my desktop,
and can access it fine from my laptop.
But I'd like to use TLS encryption
(as the desktop ldap is open to the world).
Unfortunately I find the openldap documentation
very difficult to follow.
It is almost as though they speak a different language,
say Finnish or Hungarian.
I've followed the instructions in chapter 14, "Using TLS",
in the OpenLDAP Software 2.4 Administrator's Guide
at <http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/>.
I've un-commented out the lines
-----------------------------
TLSCACertificateFile /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt
TLSCertificateFile /etc/pki/tls/certs/slapd.pem
TLSCertificateKeyFile /etc/pki/tls/certs/slapd.pem
-----------------------------
and restarted "service ldap".
But I see no evidence that this has had any effect.
I can access the ldap directory from my laptop
exactly as I did before,
even if I make the change
-----------------------------
# TLS_REQCERT allow
TLS_REQCERT try
-----------------------------
in ldap.conf on my laptop,
which as far as I can see (from "man ldap.conf")
should require my certificate(s) to be checked.
But is seems to work, as I said, with or without certificates,
and I see no evidence from tcpdump that
any encryption has been requested or implemented.
If someone who speaks openldap could enlighten me
I should be very grateful.
Incidentally, I have avoided installing SASL authentication,
basically because I assumed that as it is comes from Cyrus
it was somehow related to Cyrus-Imap,
which caused me great grief before I moved to dovecot.
Is SASL in fact the standard way to authenticate openldap?
I read somewhere that there are "many ways"
of authenticating openldap ,
without unfortunately any particular way being suggested.
Apologies for addressing what is probably an inappropriate forum.
I tried posting to the gmane newsgroup
mirroring the mailing list at openldap-software(a)openldap.org
but unfortunately my postings there never appear.
Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

pb with openpgp and thunderbird
by François Patte
Bonsoir,
I got a problem with thunderbird and openpgp: I cannot read any messages
sent by myself and signed with pgp enabled.
details:
1- I send a test message to myself, with pgp signature: I cannot read
it, tb is stuck and I have to kill it.
problem occurs even if I send the message with another mail editor (mutt
for instance).
2- I send some message to someone and sign it. I cannot read the reply.
Problem does not seem to occur if I disable pgp.
does anyone have a clue?
running fc6 with thunderbird-2.0.0.9-1.fc7.i386
pb was there with thunderbird-1.5 from fc6, that's why I upgraded to f7
thunderbird.
Thanks for any help.
