Yum on x86_64
by Gareth Bult
Hi,
I seem to have (finally :) ) acquired a complete(ish) / working x86_64
system .. but I'm still having trouble with a few bits, not least "yum".
I get;
Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Base
Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Released Updates
Server: Fedora Core 1 - i386 - Unreleased Updates
Finding updated packages
Traceback (most recent call last):

yummain.main(sys.argv[1:])
File "yummain.py", line 204, in main
File "clientStuff.py", line 363, in getupdatedhdrlist
File "clientStuff.py", line 409, in bestversion
IndexError: list index out of range
[root@squizzey oddjob]#
(This is a modified system [2.6.0-test11] however it seems to run well)
Pointing it at mozilla's channel for SeaMonkey seems to work if I
disable the default channels, however...
Anyone any ideas ?
(I was sort of expecting to see it say "no x86_64 updates supported yet"
as opposed to a complete crash)
Also, can yum pull SRPMS and rebuild them ?

Windows XP Sucks!
by Karl Larsen
I got the file holding the Manual for my BIOS on this computer from
BioStar web page and after clicking on the manual thing I d/l a file. It
is CRUS5-M9_0829C_B.exe and I have d/l it several times because of Windows.
The .exe makes it a windows file for sure. I tried using the Linux
unzip on it and it failed. So fired up my Work laptop which has winXP on
it that is seldom used. I have it on a memory stick and when I put it on
Windows nothing much happened. But I recalled to bring up "My Computer".
And sure enough there was a Kenstin stick as e: and I clicked on it and
there was my file.
I put mouse over file and moved it over to the main window. It
didn't work and put up a long winded tail why I can't do that. It
appears I on the keyboard do not have permission to do that.
I have a kernel package for F7 on the stick that went to my F7 on
the laptop. I tried to slide that off and it went without a problem. In
fact only the above file can't be moved.
Next I right clicked the file on the stick and selected to Run it.
The error panel came up and told me the file is a Trogan type of thing
and will not open it.
At a coffee get together all the other guys run Windows and the said
there is a way to turn off the thing that calls EVERYTHING a problem.
But it is well hidden. I had to listen to all the register problems and
how you need to defrag windows every month or so.
Boy! Sure glad I changed to Linux.

RocketRAID 1740 driver for Fedora 7
by Ranbir
Hello Everyone,
I have a rocketraid 1740 controller that I want to use in a soon to be
installed Fedora 7 system. Highpoint's website doesn't have any Fedora
7 drivers, but they do provide a package that will let end users build
the rr1740x module for any 2.4 or 2.6 series kernel.
How would one build the rr1740x module for Fedora 7 if one doesn't have
a Fedora 7 system to build the driver on? Can I install the
kernel-devel package from Fedora 7 on a Fedora 6 host, and build the
module that way? Should I use a Fedora 7 virtual machine (e.g. vmware,
xen, etc.)?
Regards,
Ranbir

Re: sandisk sansa m240

Subject: sandisk sansa m240
I bought a sansa mdisk 240
I can not figure out how to get a playlist on it.
I can get music on it and play the music I get onto it - but not a
playlist.
I use a shell script to copy files to it - since my mp3's sometimes have
very long file names. When they are copied to the sansa they have names
001.MP3 002.MP3 etc.
It does not play them by file name alphabetical order, I can't figure
out what it does to figure out default play order.
I tried copying a very basic .m3u playlist to it -
001.MP3
002.MP3
003.MP3
I can see the playlist in the sansa but it reports no files when I
select a playlist.
USB settings are set to MSC
Has anyone figured out how to get a playlist onto a sansa m240?
I'm almost wondering if it is something silly like wanting the playlist
to have DOS line breaks - but before I play around too much, I thought
I'd ask if anyone else has done it.
my iPod mini broke :(
That was easy to use in Linux (gtkpod) - but I don't want to buy another
iPod until they make one with a user serviceable battery.
I have the e280 and I've been struggling with this myself.
The playlist format is a specially-formatted UTF-16LE text file. I don't like that either.
I mount mine as a plain USB disk and then use a couple of Python scripts I hand-rolled to create playlists. I actually started writing a little GUI for myself using Qt, but I didn't finish it. Maybe this weekend...

hdparm shows poor performance on cached reads for PATA drive
by Konstantin Svist
Hi all,
I have an older laptop (HP ze4400 series) with a PATA hard drive.
When I check hdparm -T /dev/sda in Fedora 7 or 8, it shows me
performance of ~180MB/sec
When I use a boot CD (gparted/clonezilla) to check the speed (by the
way, it uses the old style /dev/hdc, instead) - it tells me the
performance is upward of 400MB/sec
The buffered speed seems about the same in either case at ~30MB/sec.
(I've tried enabling/disabling various settings via hdparm, while in
boot CD mode)
Why is this happening and is there a way to fix it (without reverting to
/dev/hdc)?
Thanks!

bcm4318 - Can It Work with Newer Kernels?
by Rick Bilonick
I'm running F6 (2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 kernel) and the bcm4318 works
perfectly with ndiswrapper using networkmanager or neat (works with wep
and wpa). It's stable and fast. With any newer kernel I need to use the
rev. 4 firmware. I finally found this firmware and used fwcutter to
extract and install it in /lib/firmware. It ALMOST works. NetworkManager
starts and tries to connect (dmesg shows that the radio is on and the
driver is loaded) but never connects. Worse it ALWAYS locks up the
system (can't even get to a console or open a terminal shell) and I have
to do a hard reboot. I'm running on a Dell Inspiron 2200 that has the
4318 built in. I'm not sure why newer kernels would necessarily screw up
a working wireless card. Is there some way to use the older driver with
ndiswrapper and the newer kernels? I have not been able to get
ndiswrapper to work with this card and the newer kernels. I need to fix
this before I can consider moving to F8.
Any suggestions on getting this to work would be appreciated. Any
suggestions for a wireless pccard would also be appreciated.

Thunderbird and Snapshot
by Paul Lemmons
I am almost certain I have done this before but I am getting old and may
be imagining things. I have opened up a new message in Thunderbird
(latest and greatest). I have verified that the format is "Rich Text
(HTML)". I go to KSnapShot and snap a section of the screen and click on
the "Copy to Clipboard" button. I then try to paste it into the note and
it simply does nothing.
Am I missing something? I would like to paste an image into a note to
send as documentation to someone.

help request about NX1101 (or the IP1000) network card driver
by Gijs
Hey List,
I'm wondering if anyone else has any experience using the NX1101 Asus
network card with kernel version 2.6.22?
It identifies itself the following in lspci:
Sundance Technology Inc / IC Plus Corp IC Plus IP1000 Family Gigabit
Ethernet (rev 41)
The reason that I'm asking is, that it took me quite some hours to get
the module up and running.
The makefile had some bugs in it, as well as the module source itself,
which I needed to fix first.
It's running now, but there seems to be something wrong with multicast.
I'm using Linux-IGD for UPNP, and this requires multicast packets to work.
However, when my clients send multicast packets to find the upnp daemon,
the computer with the NX1101 doesn't pick them up.
When I put the card into promiscuous mode, it does get the packets (and
responds to them properly).
I can't put my finger to it, a really weird problem.
