OT: Power Supplies
by RoboticGolem
Does everyone here agree that a 500watt power supply is sufficient
enough for a dual MP 1800 board with 4 hard disks, DVDrom, cdrw,
dvdrw, and plenty of self powered usb hubs? I'm trying to figure out
whats up with my computer and my next stop is to call an electrician.

FC5 fails to boot after install
by jery_wang
here is the problem...after finishing the Installation, i reboot then Windows XP boots up like normal instead of grub. so i went into BIOS changed boot priority to :
1. [CDROM]
2. [HDD-1]
3. [HDD-0]
then all i get is a bash line:
GRUB>_
from here i don't know what to do...i find it odd that
stage2 didn't load.
it should be known that i'm using two hard drives.
tried using OSL2000 bootloader but that didn't work either, so i took it back off. i don't understand why it's doing this. FC4 didn't have this issue. thinking about trying the text based install and seeing what happens...but i'd rather not go that way. I'll wait for responses first before i make a decision.
*note*
i'm still a newbie to linux. kinda half migrating from MS untill i get comfortable with linux.

ssh-ing through an authenticating proxy server
by Tony Crouch
Hi All,
I am wanting to log-in remotely from my university campus to my home
machine connected behind a router. In the previous thread, answered by
Thad (thanks for this), I learnt that port-forwarded needs to be enabled
on the router ... done :-)
Now, my only problem is how to use ssh is such a way that it will accept
a username and password in order to authenticate myself to get through
my universities proxy server.
I am guessing something of the like:
ssh --http-username=tony --http-password=***** tony@my-modem-ip-address
I had a look through the ssh man page but didn't see anything that stuck
out. So my guess was then that a global proxy username and password file
may need to be created ... or something of the like.
Was wondering if someone might be able to shed some light on this for me
please.
Cheers,
Tony Crouch

world clock application for FC5/Gnome?
by Robin Bowes
Hi,
I'd like to display around 4 analogue clocks, each showing a different
time around the work, preferably in the panel, but a standalone app
would work too.
Does anyone know of an app that can do this?
Thanks,
R.

OT: Canadian Census 2006
by spmirowski
Canada now allows the Census to be done online. I tried to login and
got the current
version of the browser not supported error. It recommended using
Firefox, Mozilla,
IE, Netscape, or Safari (also mentioning to use JRE > 1.4.x). Funny, I
was using Firefox.
So, next I tried Mozilla Suite, then Seamonkey, then Opera. No good.
BTW, I am running
JRE 1.5.0_06.
Time to call the help line (going to try to submit a bug report to the
poor call centre =).
Well, big lineup, I stayed on the line since I wasn't going anywhere.
It did recommend
me to phone back at non peak hours and gave some times. 1st problem, it
didn't give time
zones with the times. Canada has enough timezones that that can be
slight problem.
Staying on the line ...
After what seemed to be 30 mins, I got to speak to a rep. I mentioned
my browser wasn't
supported, he said I could download Firefox, etc. I said I tried that.
Asked what my OS
was. Linux. There followed some Ums and Ahs. Paper shuffling. Well
it supports
Windows and and and Um. NEways, I held for a moment while he found the
supported
OS lists. When he got back, he started asking about browsers, so I
listed what I had tried
and my Java version. Again the question what OS? Linux - Fedora Core
5. Oh, that's the
problem. It supports the majority of Windows version and Mac. Okay,
thanks.
What could have saved me a heap of time? Well, the browser detection
could have used
some novice JavaScript to detect my OS version and say NAE, you aren't
supported.
Instead there's code to say your browser isn't supported so go download
a supported browser
which is the very one you are using right now.
What is the point of advising people to use multi-platform browsers and
basing it on Java
which is also multi-platform, yet only have it work with Windows and
Mac? Why has
every other Gov't Ca. website I have been to work with Firefox and
Mozilla?
The Census is to find out who I am, and put me in the Stats.
Thankfully, when I finish
filling out my paper Census, I will be able to fill in Comments section,
submit some
bug reports and give them a freebee stat that isn't in the
questionnaire: I am one of the
Canadians whom doesn't have Mac or Windows on his computer.

fc5 hangs
by David
Two days in a row my fc5 computer has frozen soon after I start using it in
the morning. The screen wakes up from screensaver mode when I move the
mouse and I'm able to do a few things like change the viewport... then the
screen goes blank and all I can see is the outline of the mouse pointer
which is no longer responsive to mouse motion. The keyboard is unresponsive
to control-alt-backspace and control-alt-delete and caps lock and num lock
fail to change the keyboard lights. How do I attempt to identify the
problem in a case like this? I think I might have clicked on an evolution
send/receive button soon before both crashes, so my only guess right now is
an evolution problem.

FC5, evolution on 90% CPU
by András Horváth
Hi,
I just upgraded from FC4 to FC5 (and upgraded) and get a strange problem:
When I start evolution, it begins to eat 85-90% of CPU continuously.
Even if there are no incoming mail to filter or other work to do. The
CPU temperature on my laptop is 76-78 C if evolution is running and
power consumption is very high.
I did not observe such phenomena in earlier versions.
What should be the problem?
Thank you in advance,
András
