by Ryne Sechrist
ok well I have just been having problem after problem trying to install
fedora....i'm trying to install it on a compaq presario, 190 ram, 800 MHZ,
amd k6, ati graphics, it has windows 98 on it right now but i'm doing a full
delete of windows and replacing it with fedora 5....well first off i
downloaded the fives images off the site and burnt them as images...i then
tried to install them which the first cd failed...so i tested all my cds and
only disk 2 and 5 passed...so i redownloaded from another mirror the
rest....well on the second media check attempt only disk one passed....so i
redownloaded the others from another mirror...well that media check didn't
pass either one...so i tried again on another mirror and check failed
again....so i tried another and failed and the last time i tried they failed
again...well i was wondering "well disk 5 passed before so lets see if it
passes a second time" and it didn't...so basically i got disk 1,2,and 5 to
pass and failed 7 times on disks 3 and 4, and i retested disk 5 and it
failed....so i tried to install fedora core 5 anyway....well everythign was
going fine untill it got to the installation of the first disk...i got
through 64% on the first disk then all of the sudden my screen turned into a
bunch of text....well i'm at the end of my ropes and i have no idea what to
do now....i really want fedora but i can't seem to find stable images or if
my computer is too old or what? any help would be great...like i said i

GNOME clock applet calendar
by Matthew Saltzman
I raised this question in another thread and got a partial answer, but I
didn't follow up.
The pop-down calendar in the clock on my taskbar has weeks that run from
Monday to Sunday. I'd like my weeks to run from Sunday to Saturday, but I
can't spot a setting to do that. In the earlier thread, I learned that
this property was supposed to be locale-dependent. But I didn't learn
what needs to be set.
I would have thought /etc/sysconfig/i18n would be the thing to set. But
my /etc/sysconfig/i18n contains
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"
The result of the locale command is
$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
What needs to be set to get my calendar in US format? Or is this a bug?
TIA.

Firefox flash plugin
by Mariano López Reta
Hello, list.
I tried to install Macromedia's flash plugin, both manually and
automatically (plugin finder). Both finish with "plugin installed". I
checked that it really copied the files to the plugins directory (on
Firefox support page, they say that the xpt file goes in the components
directory, so I copied it there too). I also copied the files
from /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1 to /usr/lib/mozilla
and /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.12
I restarted the browser a zillion times (I even logged off and on
again), but when I open a web page with flash, it keeps telling me that
I need the plugin.
Can someone tell me what is going on here? I'm lost in the fog at this
point...
Thanks in advance,

Problem with accents on mounted partitions
by Paul Smith
Dear All
When I mount, from FC5, a partition of FC4 with the command
mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/fc4
I get 'm\341tica' as the name of the directory 'mática'. How can I get
the accents correctly?
Thanks in advance,

Fedora Core 5 -- slow GUI performance
by Motor
I have an AMD Athlon XP2000+ with a Matrox G550 card. I used to use it
with satisfactorily with FC4. I recently upgraded to FC5, and I'm finding
that the graphics performance is quite poor.
The major problem was Firefox, and I solved that by telling firefox not to
use Pango (and by extension Cairo -- as I understand it) with the
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 environment variable. However, the same problem
afflicts all GNOME applications. Slow redraws and generally sluggish
feelings and high CPU usage generally -- gfx seem particularly badly
affected when heavy CPU using programs are used.
I notice it particularly with Nautilus in List view mode... which, as a
naive assumption, I take to be because it has lots of text. The slow down
doesn't seem to affect Nedit (which doesn't use Pango). For example,
resizing a GNOME terminal window when it is sitting on top of GNOME app
with lots of text, I can practically watch the GNOME terminal window
redraw itself.
This... well... sucks, and is a pretty major regression from FC4,
especially since the Matrox G550 has Free software drivers. Is it ever
likely to get fixed, or am I just stuck? Is there anyway to get Pango in
FC5 not to use Cairo (assuming that is the culprit)?

Adding CPU temp to Ksensors

Is it possible to add CPU temp to Ksensors? If not, is there another
package that allows me to see the CPU temperature?
Thanks

OT: bind question
by Steven J Lamb
I am setting up a domain on a bind 9 server, I want to forward all of
the subdomains as a CNAME to a different domain.
An example zone file is bellow
@ IN SOA ns1.domain.net.
administrator.domain.net. (
2006033165 ; serial
3600 ; refresh
600 ; retry
86400 ; expire
3600 ; default_ttl
)
www 3600 IN A 254.254.36.5
@ IN MX 0 ms1.domain.net.
@ IN MX 0 ms2.domain.net.
@ IN NS ns1.domain.net.
@ IN NS ns2.domain.net.
@ IN A 254.254.36.5
admin 3600 IN CNAME www.CCC.com.
*.BBB.com. 3600 IN CNAME *.CCC.com.
This seems to work fine. However when A record requests go to BBB.com
and get forwarded to CCC.com they need to keep the specific subdomain
attached to the front of it as it is going to a webserver with virtual
hosts. Without setting up all of the subdomins specificly is there
anyway to accomplish this
Any suggestions welcome
Thanks

FC5 127.0.0.1 refuses connection
by Geoffrey Leach
New update of FC5. Connection to internet (via eth0 and satellite) OK.
However ...
#sendmail -v root
test
.
root... Connecting to [127.0.0.1] via relay...
root... Deferred: Connection refused by [127.0.0.1]
telnet, fetchmail, binmail (of course) have same problem. Can ping
127.0.0.1
Presumably related to update.
Any suggestions?

FC4 crashes repeatedly on dual dual-core Opteron Supermicro AS1020A-T
by Michal Szymanski
Hi,
I have recently purchased three Supermicro AS1020A-T servers equipped
with two dual-core Opterons 280 each. H8DAR-T motherboards, 8 or 12 GB
RAM. The systems carry FC4 x86_64 with proprietary driver (made by
Adaptec) for the onboard Marvell 88SX6041 SATA Controller.
Original (install) kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp - unfortunately not
upgradable due to the lack of the SATA driver for other kernel
versions.
All systems crash (either hang with some "machine check exception"
kernel messages or reset) when loaded with repeating runs of
1.3gb, CPU intensive with some I/O. I run 2 or 4 jobs simultaneously and
it never survived more than a few hours.
Suspecting it may be the SATA driver problem I mounted /tmp as "tmpfs"
and repeated the tests entirely in /tmp (with plenty of RAM this means
doing I/O in memory). No success.
It is somewhat better when I run similar size no-I/O jobs but these also
crash, although less frequently.
I tried to install i386 version, also crashes.
Memtest does not show any RAM errors.
The SATA driver works somewhat strangely. In addition to the kernel
module "aar81xx", there is also "aar81xx_wd" process in the user space,
always seen by "ps" as in "D - uninterruptible sleep", so the "idle"
load of the machine is always 1.
There is no Marvell driver for FC5 (yet?) so I cannot give it a try.
Any ideas or sharing experience on this hardware under Linux or
dual-core Opterons under Linux (e.g. kernel version requiremnets) would
be welcomed.
regards, Michal.

NX bit: AMD vs Intel?
by Jurgen Kramer
On my Intel system (Xeon with EMT64 support) which runs the 32-bit
version of FC5 I can see that NX support is active (from dmesg):
NX (Execute Disable) protection: active
On my other system, a AMD64 system running the 64-bit version of FC4,
there is no message regarding NX support being enabled of disabled at
all.
Checking init.c in the kernel sources it seems that NX support is
depended on PAE support and NX support from the processor. As the AMD
processor supports both I aspect to see a NX procection active message
on my AMD system as well. Does NX support suppose to work on 64-bit
kernels ?
Both systems run kernel 2.6.16.
