Re: bacula server
by RYAN M. vAN GINNEKEN
Thanks again mostly u/we got it to work so far. However it is asking for a pile of dependancies. I know give a guy an inch and he will try to take a mile or km here in Canada. Is there a way to install without any gui stuff or mabey i am wrong mabey there is no gui stuff. Some of the dependancies for those dependancies are X11 related.
I do not have any X11 stuff on this box it has no xwindows/gnome system and is minimum install Command prompt only. So before i go ahead and make a big mess of my faily clean fedora box do i really need all these or is there a way to turn some of them off.
Thanks again and sorry about top post i think my clock was messed up not sure how it happend but should be fixed now.

Lets just say it is a probably a good thing the fedora box is remote so i cannot physically get to it. Got C++ installed managed to get the extras working and seem to have the rpmbuildtree in my home directory. Looks like i am on to a whole new set of problems now, but this is great i think this means progress right?

We got the defines wrong. Try this:
$ rpmbuild --rebuild \
--define 'build_fc3 1' \
--define 'build_mysql4 1' \
bacula-1.38.5-4.src.rpm

Yes, it is. See here for an explanation:

kpilot on FC6
by Frank Cox
I use my Palm Tungsten E to read books on. Therefore, I load it up with books
a couple of times a year and that's the only time I plug it into my computer.
I used kpilot to copy my books the last time I did this on Fedora Core 5, but
tonight when I try the same thing with Fedora Core 6 I get this:

Question about file system permissions
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi, all
Suppose that in a FC6 system there are two users, user01 and user02. Both are
members of the group users, which is their primary group. They're not members
of the group root. There is a directory named /test:
drwxrwx--- 2 root users 4096 Dez 26 12:42 test/
In this directory, there is a file named file.txt:
-rw-r----- 1 user01 root 90 Dez 26 12:43 file.txt
user02, as expected, is not able to read nor modify the contents of this file,
as he does not have read nor write permissions on it. However, he can delete
the file, because he has write permissions on /test, once he's member of the
group users.
However, if user02 opens file.txt in VIM, edit it and then save it with :w!,
the file is modified, saved, and its ownership is altered to user02:users.
How can this happen?? How can VIM alter the ownership and write to this file,
if user02 is not it's owner and have no permissions on it? user02 can't do
that using chown, chmod nor chgrp, but using VIM he can?!
Thanks,
Marcelo

Can't boot after upgrade to FC6
by Steve Blackwell
The upgrade from FC5 to FC6 appeared to go OK at first and I was able
to log in and do a package update which had no problems. However after
I installed xen I can no longer boot; the system just reboots.
After some investigation I found that when I boot from the DVD in
rescue mode and run grub from the command line I get this:
# grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
The file /boot/device.map contains:
(hd0) /dev/hdi
(hd1) /dev/sda
hd1 is my Windows disk.
Parted shows me this:
# parted /dev/hdi
Model WDC WD1600JB-00FUA0 (ide)
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition table: msdos
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 32.3KB 107MB 107MB Primary ext3 boot
2 107MB 160GB 160GB Primary lvm
I noticed from reading the grub manual
(http:\\www.gnu.org\software\grub\manual.htm#Features) that it does
not list ext3 as one of the supported filesystem types.
Is this my problem or is the manual not up-to-date? If this is the
problem how do I change the boot partition from ext3 to ext2 and how
did my FC5 system boot?
The other thing that looks odd to me is that the partition table is
msdos. Is this correct?
Answers to these questions or any other suggestions will be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

FC6: Desktop Messed Up After Updates
by Eric Mader
Hi,
I did a clean install of FC6 x64. (On VMWare 6.0 Beta on a Vista
Ultimate x64 (RTM) host.) When the system came up, it told me there were
156 updates. I applied all the updates except for frysk, which seems to
have conflicts w/ the previous version.
When I rebooted the system, my desktop is completely messed up. All of
the panels are gone execpt for one tiny one that has a few of the
widgets I had installed the windows have different borders, and the
terminal window seems to be larger and uses a different font.
Thinking that perhaps my session got messed up somehow, I tried logging
in as root, which I had never done before. That desktop was the same way.
Has anyone else seen this? What can I try to correct it?

Eric Mader

Multimedia controller: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 4d52 ??
by Bill Case
Hi:
'lspc1' returns "Multimedia controller: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown
device 4d52". The unknown device is a TV Wonder 550 that has been
installed and works properly in WindowsXP.
'lsmod' returns no bttv or bt878 drivers.
As far as I can tell, from the ATI site and the tvtimes site, it should
be using the bttv driver, but this is not entirely clear to me from
their documentation.
GATOS is not applicable.
Can someone tell me how to get this TV Tuner card installed and working
in Fedora Core 6? Do I have to modprobe? What?

Cursor problems when running FC6 with Radeon driver in dual head mode.
by Vini Engel
Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone is having any cursor problems when running FC6 with
two monitors. I have a Dell machine with an ATI Radeon dual port card that is
having some strange issues when I move the mouse cursor across to the screen
two.
The cursor doesn't change when it is on the second screen, for example if I
move it quickly from screen one to screen two and on screen one I was using a
text editor the cursor on screen two will be a text editor's cursor and will
never become a pointer nor any other type of cursor. If I move it over some
part of a window where we would expect the cursor to change it won't change.
I am at this moment using a driver provided by ATI but I have used the radeon
driver that comes with FC6 and I have the exact same problem. I also tried
using "SWcursor On" in my xorg.conf, this fixes the problem but creates
another one. When I move the mouse cursor anywhere on any screen it leaves a
trace of dirty on the screen as if I was moving a square and so my screen
becomes full of squares.
I am running xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.1-47.fc6 and kernel 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6.
My xorg config is simple and I am running xinerama.
If anyone is having the same issue and would like to discuss this or if you
even know that could be causing this problem, I would very much like to talk
to you.
Regards,
Vini

Rebuild computer with Intel DG965WH motherboard
by Gordon Charrick
I decided it's time to rebuild my computer and replace the aging Asus
motherboard and Matrox graphics card and old ATA drives.
I went to Fry's and picked out a motherboard that I hope will work with
no problems. At least I have 15 days to return it. I also picked up a
couple Maxtor SATA drives. I plan to use the onboard graphics and sound.
Doing some googling, I'm not quite sure how compatible all the hardware
will be with FC6. It looks like there might be a problem with DVD drive.
Before I go through the time and hassle of taking apart my perfectly
working computer to replace all the innards only to find I may have to
get a different motherboard, I thought I'd ask the list for
recommendations on current motherboards that can handle dual-core
processors. Fry's has a dizzying array of motherboards in stock so
picking one is no easy task when it comes to Linux.

FC6 shutdown error with vmware
by Paul Smith
Dear All
When I shutdown the PC, it repeats an error message, in fact, endless.
The error message starts after killall process activated.
Here is the error:
unregister_netdevice: waiting for vmnet1 to become free Usage Count = 1
The error is endless, I have to press i/o button to hard shutdown.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

multiple-user behavior
by Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I have FC 6, and use gnome. I just created a second user, and I'm
curious about the behavior when I log in to the other user.
On the first user, I run BOINC (a distributed processing client). So, I
log out of that account, and into the second. I used 'top', and noticed
that boinc is still running.
I logged out of the second and back into the first. With 'top', I see
boinc is still running; however, its gui is nowhere to be found! How do
I get it back?
