FC6 Notebook
by Gérard Milmeister
Hi,
I am going to acquire a new notebook.
It should have adquate battery power. No high-end video card is needed,
I think Intel 9xx should be enough. Other than that, some features such
as card reader would be nice.
I have a choice among the following brands:
Acer
Asus
HP
Toshiba
Fujitsu
Is there any model that is particularly suited for FC6?

login from a web browser
by Justin Zygmont
Does anyone hapen to know of a program that can run either as an applet or
servlet to allow ssh or telnet logins through a web browser. Its harder
to find one that works well and is easy to use.
Thanks,

Sick of crappy wireless, suggestions?
by Neal Becker
I have bcm4318. I've got wireless working with windoze driver, but it's
very unreliable. I've had enough. Can anyone suggest an add-on card for
my laptop that will work well with FC6, natively?

Cinepaint
by Claude Jones
Does anyone have Cinepaint running in FC6?
I've downloaded the ver 21 tarball and running configure yields up the
following toward the very end:
checking for gtk-config... no
checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.8... no
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
If I run this I see the following gtk stuff installed on my system:
$ rpm -qa | grep gtk
gtk2-engines-2.8.0-1.fc6
usermode-gtk-1.87-3
libgtk-java-2.8.7-2.fc6
gtkhtml3-3.12.2-1.fc6
gtk-sharp2-2.10.0-3.fc6
gtkspell-2.0.11-2.1
gtk+-1.2.10-55.fc6
authconfig-gtk-5.3.12-1.fc6
pygtk2-2.10.3-3.fc6
gtkhtml2-2.11.0-3
gnome-python2-gtksourceview-2.16.0-1.fc6
gtk-murrine-engine-0.31-1.leofc6
pygtk2-libglade-2.10.3-3.fc6
gtk2-devel-2.10.4-8.fc6
gtk2-2.10.4-8.fc6
gtksourceview-1.8.0-1.fc6
libswt3-gtk2-3.2.1-23.fc6
I could really use the more robust aspects of Cinepaint over the Gimp - does
anyone know where I need to go to pursue this? I've tried the rpm search but
the most recent rpm I can find is for FC4, which used to run under FC5, but
won't install on FC6 with the following errors:
Missing Dependency: libIex.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Missing Dependency: libIlmImf.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Missing Dependency: libHalf.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Missing Dependency: libImath.so.2 is needed by package cinepaint
Searches on rpmbone and google yield up openEXR packages for those libs -
openEXR is already installed on my system, though presumably, not the version
I need
So, to get back to my question, is this going nowhere, or has someone
succeeded in getting Cinepaint to run on FC6?

FC6 and acroread - not working
by Florin Andrei
I got acroread-7.0.5-2.2.fc5.rf.nosrc.rpm from here:
http://dries.ulyssis.org/rpm/packages/acroread/info.html
I extracted the spec file. I downloaded the latest acroread tar.gz from
Adobe, then adjusted the spec for the new version. Then rebuilt the
acroread binary package.
But when I launch acroread, I get a bunch of messages like this:
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
expr: syntax error
Any clue?

FC4 -> FC6 dvd writer not detected
by Douglas Phillipson
After I upgraded to FC6 my DVD writer was no longer detected, I suspect
because I had to comment out a line in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules
to get my machine to boot. What can I do to get the DVD detected and
the device made for it, after the machine is booted. Because I had to
comment out the following line in 50-udev.rules:
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="?*", ENV{MODALIAS}=="?*",
RUN+="/sbin/modprobe $env{MODALIAS}"
I had to put: "/sbin/modprobe snd-emu10k1" in /etc/rc.local for my
sound card driver to be loaded. I assume I need another modprobe
command for my DVD, I just don't know what it is...
Thanks

Fedora Core 6 not recognizing all of my memory
by SevenFortyOne
Greetings,
I just installed FC6 on a Dell 6800 with 32GB of ram. When I run the free
command it reports I only have about 15GB available. I had FC4 on this
machine and it saw all 32GB of Ram. I checked the BIOS and it seems to see
all 32GB as well.
Does anyone know if there is a known problem with FC6 seeing this much RAM?

qwerty layout shortcuts
by Dotan Cohen
On KDE I've got three keyboard layouts installed- US English, Dvorak,
and Hebrew. I go nuts switching over to US English everytime that I
need to perform a keyboard shortcut. How can I have the keyboard
shortcuts work as if the keyboard is always qwerty? I'd like to
configure it at the X level rather than at the KDE level, but I'd
accept any solution that works. Thanks in advance.

Will my graphics card support this?
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
I received a Dell 20 inch monitor for Christmas. It's native resolution
is 1680x1050. Looking at my Xorg.0.log file, I find these lines:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(1): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(1): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(1): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
(II) NVIDIA(1): Not using default mode "1680x1050" (hsync out of range)
Do these lines mean my video card will not support this resolution or
that I need to do some configuration to get the card to support this
resolution or something else entirely?
Thanks!
