bcm43xx headache
by oleksandr korneta
hello all,
here is a fresh Fedora Core 6 installation on a Compaq v2404us laptop.
The built-in wireless adapter is based on Broadcom bcm4318 chip. On a
previous installation I was using ndiswrapper with windows driver for
x86_64, but since I've heard a lot about a native driver for bcm43xx
family and decided to give it a try this time.
With the help of HOWTO from fedoraforum.org everything went smoothly
and my wireless started working like a charm. However now, after a
couple days of using it I am not so excited.
The wireless works very unstable. Sometimes it works fine the whole day,
and another day I am not able to connect for hours. I am using
NetworkManager and I can see my access point (AP) along the whole bunch
of another APs in my apartment complex but does not want to establish a
connection. I am not using any encryption, just mac-address-based
filtering on my wireless router, so wpa_supplicant should not come into
play. Also, the AP is just next room so the signal should be strong enough.
What bothers me the most is that even when the connection is stable
/var/log/messages gets full of the following crap:

and this is happening for the whole day constantly. I have no idea what
is this SoftMAC thing and what wpa_supplicant has to do with my
connection if there is no encryption and its daemon is even turned off.
I can also attach /var/log/messages and dmesg output if someone is
willing to help.
Right now I am thinking about switching back to ndiswrapper unless
someone gives me a good argument to stay.
Thank you in advance,

Network installation of FC6 hangs
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi,
In a lab set up for a Linux course using FC6, I've configured local yum
repositories for core, extras, updates and livna. The students intall FC6 in
their machines (16 machines) using these local repositories. However, several
installations hang while copying files from the server. I can switch to the
consoles and no error messages are shown, but anaconda stops responding.
Some machines have to restart installation several times until they can get to
the end of the process. This behavior is apparently random, it can happen
with any of the lab machines. Also, it can happen while all the 16 machines
are running the network installation simultaneously or if just one of them is
running it. The server do not stop responding, because some machines finish
installation while others hang and I can see httpd answering GET requests by
watching the apache access log. The hardware is the same in all workstations
(IBM ThinkCentre, P-IV, 256 MB RAM).
Any idea on how to solve this?
Thanks,
Marcelo

How to go from LVM back to a plain partition
by johannes
Hi,
I recently installed Fedora 5 on a machine with just one HD. This PC
serves as a backup server for the network together with a tape changer.
Now I wanted to use partimage to create a image for disaster recovery,
but had to find that partimage won't work on LVM.
This machine does not need LVM, the single is by far large enough. How
can I go back to a non-LVM system? Is there a way other than rebuilding it?
Any help is appreciated

1440x900 wide screen monitor
by Pete
Fedora Core 4
82945G Express Intel Graphics Adapter
Greetings
I just received a ViewSonic wide screen flat panel LCD monitor.
Unfortunately, this model is not available in my monitor list.
I have been told there is a way to configure (i.e. add the dimensions
somehow) this in Linux. I have searched Google and have not found
anything which is helpful.
Any hints on where to find help on this or if someone is willing to
hand-hold me through a configuration, I would be grateful.

Misconfiguration or ferature.
by Aaron Konstam
Maybe this has been addressed before and I missed it.
When I insert a data CD in FC6 as a normal user the CD is mounted and a
nautilus window with its contents appear.
As root the data CD is not mounted. The presferences in both cases are
identical. Have I missed something ore are data CD-s not supposed to be
mountable by root?

aaron konstam:
Ok, I am just being picky. What you are saying is ok as long as:
1. The rescue disk is for the same version of FC as the system whose MBR
you are updating.
2. The system on hd0 has not had its grub updated in any way.
In most cases that will be true but for many of us who grab the first
rescue disk we have available you instructions will get you in trouble
---
aaron,
your comment 1. doesn't seem to jibe with my experience:
i used a knoppix cd to reboot and run those cmds
to restore the mbr on an fc5 system

submissions to list were lost....
by Wade Hampton
I sent a couple of questions to the list a few days ago and they never
showed up. Was there a problem earlier this week or are some submissions
being dropped?
