tip: automated way to delete duplicate rpms
by Kim Lux
I recently updated a server from fc3 to fc6. All seemed to go well
except the first yum attempt to update the machine failed and when I
entered synaptic I received a ton of errors about duplicate rpms
installed on the machine. I've run into this issue before.
Unfortunately neither yum nor synaptic has a way to deal with it, as far
as I can tell.
Rather than manually go through the list of offending rpms and delete
them, I did things semi automatically. There were 120 duplicate rpms on
my machine, so manually typing the full package names would have taken a
while.
Here is what I did instead.
1) Generate a list of all the rpm packages installed.
$rpm -qa --queryformat '%{name}\n' > pkglist
This generates an unsorted list that looks like this.
libavc1394
libmusicbrainz
ethtool
desktop-file-utils
less
time
libXrandr
rmt
2) Sort the list and find the duplicates
$sort -g pkglist | uniq -d > duplicates
This list will look like
a2ps
anacron
at
audit
...
3) Generate a list of the packages with versions to look at and edit
I created a small script file called dupWithVersions with this in it
for pkg in `cat duplicates`; do
rpm -q $pkg
done
Redirect the output to another file like this. $dupWithVersions
>removeList
The remove list will look like this:
a2ps-4.13b-57
a2ps-4.13b-57.fc6.3
anacron-2.3-41.fc6
anacron-2.3-44.fc6
at-3.1.8-82.fc6
at-3.1.8-84.fc6
audit-1.2.8-1.fc6
audit-1.3-2.fc6
Go through the remove list and manually remove the versions you want to
KEEP ! Remember this is a list of rpms you want to remove !
4) Remove the rpms in the remove list.
To do this I generated a little script as follows:
for pkg in `cat removelist`; do
rpm -e $pkg
done
This process quickly and correctly removed the duplicate rpms from my
machine.
I hope this helps someone.

Webcam and FC6
by Keith Powell
Just before Christmas, I was trying to get my Logitech Quickcam Chat
working in FC6. In spite of much help, and spending days trying the
different suggestions both from here and elsewhere, I couldn't get it
to work. Then Christmas took priority and I had to abandon it.
I've now been able to have another look at it.
I have the i686 version of the kernel, the i686 kernel-devel with the
i386 kernel headers. All for the '2798' kernel
Like Gilboa, on another thread, I downloaded the
gspcav1-20061216.tar.gz file from mxhaard.
But, when I try to compile gspca, I get the following error:
[root@localhost gspcav1-20061216]# make
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build

[root@localhost gspcav1-20061216]#
The gspcav1-20061216.tar.gz has worked with another distro, with no
errors.
Please can anyone help?
Many thanks

Logitech Communication STX mike.
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
I've just installed a Logitech Communication STX Webcam (using the gspc
driver) and it works just fine.
(The's a small issue with kopete but the image in mplayer/in is perfect
so it must be an application issue.)
The only thing missing is microphone support.
AFAIK, the webcam includes a built in microphone. Anyone have any idea
how to operate it?

Edward, this needs more expertise than I have, so I'm quoting your attachment
to the list.

I'm sure someone will jump in with some useful hints.
What do you mean by 'full install'? Do you mean clean install rather than
upgrade, or do you mean that you elected to install every available package?
I ask that because I have seen some comments about incompatibilities if you
select everything, but it may not be relevant here. Sorry I've nothing
useful to add at this point.

Yes I did. I got it two days in a row. It turns out that it was DMA disk
errors.
The kernel then remount the disk read only.
Use smartmontools to check your disk status:
sudo /usr/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/hdx
There must be some errors logged.
The cause? Who knows ....
Power supply, old disk, bad stabilizer, bad luck, etc ....

"corrupted orphan linked list" on my home filesystem
by Robert P. J. Day
for the second time in a few days, my /home filesystem
(/dev/fc5/home, the name being a holdover when i was running FC5 under
LVM2 on this system) magically reverted to "read-only" status, forcing
me to reboot, at which point i was told:
"Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list were
found."
requiring e2fsck to fix all sorts of apparent corruption.
once is a bit weird, twice is a definite pattern. has anyone else
seen this lately? kernel is 2.6.18-1.2868.fc6.
rday
p.s. the "mount" command insisted that the filesystem was still
mounted "rw", and trying a "remount" had no effect.

Thunar very slow on FC6
by Paul Smith
Dear All
I am beginning with XFCE on Fedora Core 6, and everything seems to
work fine, except Thunar that takes often a long time to pop up. Do
you know how to improve the very slow Thunar? My computer is a fast
one (with a Dual Core with 1GB of RAM). Do other people here are
having the same problem? Someone in Thunar mailing list has raised the
suspicion that the problem may be caused by dbus and/or hal.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

many many error messages in kernel log : 4gb seg fixup, process acroread
by John Que
Hello fedora-list,
I have fedora FC6 on i386 machine with latest acroread. (7.0.8).
When starting acroerad and all the time it is opened I see many
many error messages in the kernel log:
...
Dec 31 12:27:47 rr kernel: printk: 7133 messages suppressed.
Dec 31 12:27:47 rr kernel: 4gb seg fixup, process acroread (pid
14328), cs:ip 73:00d719f7
Dec 31 12:27:52 rr kernel: printk: 2743 messages suppressed.
Dec 31 12:27:52 rr kernel: 4gb seg fixup, process acroread (pid
14328), cs:ip 73:00d719f7
....
This messages appear each second , which means thousands messages in a
second.
At the second I close the app, these messages stop.
Any idea why ?
