1. If you have less than 512m memory in the affected box increase to at
least 512m.
2. Look into the interrupt structure (and bus master issues) on your PCI
bus. Perhaps the sound HW has a lot of competition??
3. Consider using "nice" to make the soud applications and drivers have more
access to the processor time.
4. Install a low latency kernal (see:
http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/ ).
Enjoy!

VPN Router for Linux (FC4)
by Ryan D'Baisse
I have recently setup three FC4 machines at home to try my hand at
Linux development. I will soon be setting up SVN and beginning to
use Eclipse for C++ and Java development. I would like to be able to
VPN into my network, here at home, and then use SSH, SVN, etc. I do
NOT want to simply open up all of those ports on my firewall.
Unfortunately, all of the VPN routers I can find (like the Linksys
models) all stress Windows.
Can someone recommend a good VPN router that will play nice with Linux?
Will I be forced to use the vendor's (Linksys', Netgear's, etc.)
proprietary VPN client software or does Linux come with something
that should work based on some standard?
Does anyone know if there are major differences between the Linksys
BEFVP41 and the RV0041, besides the gigE port?
Thanx,
Ryan
P.S. I have both DSL and cable, if that matters (port blocking,
compatibility, etc.).

FC4 kernel upgrade woes!
by David J. Bakeman
I recently say a month ago installed FC4 and everything seems to work
great. It's nice to plug in my firewire drives and immediately see them
appear and get mounted!
The issue is that if I try to update to a later FC4 kernel say
2.6.14-1.1637_FC4 or 2.6.14-1.1644_FC4 both from rpms I can boot to
these just fine but the firewire stuff stops working :<( Actually it
might still work but all of the udev etc magic no longer works! Anybody
know why this happened? For now I've gone back to the original
2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 kernel.
Thanks

Starting a service at bootup
by Anne Wilson
I have installed popfile, which has a startup script in /etc/init.d. At
the moment when I boot up I can start popfile running with 'service
popfile start'.
I want this to be an automatic startup but I've got a total blank on how
to achieve this. Could someone please prompt me? Thanks
Anne

Would someone please point me to the information/instructions that will let me
turn off the 'popup' tool tips that display from the menus, when mouse over is
on a menu item, or when mouse over is on a menu name in the panel.

Questions about dump
by Hongwei Li
Hi,
I have a fc3 and a fc4 system that I use dump to backup files. My script for
dump has these lines:
/sbin/dump ${level}uf /dev/nst0 /
/sbin/dump ${level}uf /dev/nst0 /home
/sbin/dump ${level}uf /dev/nst0 /var
/sbin/dump ${level}uf /dev/nst0 /usr
then, the system cronjob sets:
0 23 * * 5 /usr/local/bin/backup_dump_st0.sh 0
0 23 * * 6 /usr/local/bin/backup_dump_st0.sh 9
0 23 * * 0 /usr/local/bin/backup_dump_st0.sh 8
0 23 * * 1 /usr/local/bin/backup_dump_st0.sh 7
0 23 * * 2 /usr/local/bin/backup_dump_st0.sh 6
0 23 * * 3 /usr/local/bin/backup_dump_st0.sh 5
It was working well. Recently, since more users are added and users have more
emails received, sometimes the tape is full. Then, the dump job got aborted.
The message shows something like:
...

DUMP: Change Volumes: Mount volume #2
DUMP: fopen on /dev/tty fails: No such device or address
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
My questions are:
1. How to make the tape ejected if the tape is full so that I know to insert
the 2nd tape to continue the dump job?
2. How to make the 2nd tape continueing the dump job not finished on Volume 1
tape? What change do I need in my script for dump?
3. Do I need to do anything on tape 2 so that the system knows that it is
Volume 2 for a specific Volume 1 tape?
4. For Volume 1 tape, when I do level 0 dump, it erases the whole tape so that
it has a fresh dump on it. When I reuse the volume 2 tape next time (e.g.
next month), how to erase the tape's previous dumped contents so that it will
have new dump files?
Thanks a lot for any help!
