OT - How to reply to digest email?
by Nick Bishop
Hi people,
I am subscribed to fedora-list in digest mode, to cut
email volume. My question is when I see a message in
the digest I want to reply to, how do I ensure that my
reply gets attached to the right thread at the right
point?
I do alter the subject line, and trim the reply-quoted
stuff, but is there another trick I can also use?
Nick Bishop, email replies ignored.

SAMBA home directories and SELinux
by Stephen Walton
I have the usual entry in smb.conf on my FC4 server:
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
read only = No
browseable = No
As an additional wrinkle, home directories on the server are physically
on /users but get mounted on demand on /home on both the server and on
client workstations using a typical LDAP/autofs setup.
With SELinux enabled, both smbclient and users on Windows machines fail
to get access to home directories. What magic chcon invocation do I need?

Re: Newbie: Mozilla and Firefox windows "disappear" under FC3 2.6.11
by Clive@Rational
Some diagnostic information I have found when Mozilla
fails under Linux Fedora 2.6.10 / 2.6.11
I do not have the skills to diagnose anything from
this
Should I post the info on some other list?
Thanks
Clive

OT: Massachusetts Verdict: MS Office Formats Out
by Fajar Priyanto
The future is forming up....
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1863060,00.asp
The state of Massachusetts Friday made it official: It will use only
nonproprietary document formats in state-affiliated offices effective Jan. 1,
2007. Although state CIO Peter Quinn has said repeatedly that this issue does
not represent "the state versus Microsoft Corp. —or any one company,"
adoption of the long-debated plan may result in all versions of Microsoft's
Office productivity suite being phased out of use throughout the state's
executive branch agencies.
Massachusetts posted the final version of its Enterprise Technical Reference
Model on its Web site.
As part of this new policy, the state will support the newly ratified Open
Document Format for Office Applications, or OpenDocument, and PDFs (portable
document format) as the standards for its office documents.
Quinn told DesktopLinux.com earlier this month that he challenged Microsoft
and other companies who sell software that uses proprietary document formats
to consider enabling open-format options as soon as possible. Quinn said that
"government is creating history at a rapidly increasing rate, and all
documents we save must be accessible to everybody, without having to use
'closed' software to open them now and in the future."
Quinn said the state runs a "vast majority" of its office and system computers
on Windows and that "only a very small percentage of them run Linux and other
open source software at this time. This is in tune with the general market in
the U.S. But we like to 'eat our own cooking,' in that we are using
OpenOffice.org and Linux more and more as time goes along, because it
produces open format documents."
In contrast, Microsoft's Office creates Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other
documents that are accessible only by Microsoft products, making them
ineligible for use, the state said.
"Microsoft has remade the desktop world," Quinn said. "But if you've watched
history, there's a slag heap of proprietary companies who have fallen by the
wayside because they were stuck in their ways. Just look at the minicomputer
business, for example. The world is about open standards and open source. I
can't understand why anybody would want to continue making closed-format
documents anymore."
Microsoft's answer to that is simple. MS Office, which is upgraded about every
three years and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, brought in more
than $11 billion last year, or about 28 percent of Microsoft's total revenue,
according to the company's recently filed annual report.
"We've had an active, ongoing conversation with Microsoft since January about
this, and they've been open to hearing our position," Quinn said. "But I
don't know one way or the other how they're ultimately going to react to
this. Also, this isn't just about Microsoft. We're focusing on the formats
here, not necessarily the software."
Unless Microsoft starts supporting OO.org, Quinn said, the state will
gradually phase out Microsoft Office in favor of OO.org.

exercise a hub
by Thufir
I have a hub I'd like to run some tests on. For this purpose I've
acquired two older desktops, I know that sounds backwards, but there
you are. I'm going to put a minimal, one-cd install on both desktops
and connect them with the hub. There won't be an internet connection,
nor any other computers connected to the hub but the two old desktops.
Why exercise the hub you ask? Great question.
My neighbor has a SMC7004VWBR 802.11b wireless router which I connect
through. I have an Asus WL-330g 802.11g ethernet adapter which I use
for the wi-fi connection. It's supposed to be possible to connect the
adapter to hub, and then several computers to the hub. I've spoken
with Asus, who tried it with a similar SMC router and confirmed the
setup. I spoke with SMC, who confirm that it's not the router.
I haven't totally eliminated the Asus WL-330g adapter as a suspect in
this, but the net, so to speak, is closing on the hub. The SMC tech
alternately suggested that a firewall running on the computer is
causing the problem, or that the hub is at fault. I looked through
the Windows2000 software installer, nothing there. Similarly, there
wasn't a firewall under linux, this is on a dual boot machine, of
course. Again, this points to the hub. I went through my browser
settings with SMC and have tried multiple browsers. I want to stay
focused on the hub for the moment.
The SMC tech suggested a "managed" hub, and definitely I'll check that
out. In the meantime, though, I have these two older desktops and
want to find out, if possible, if there's something wonky with the
hub.
Unfortunately, the only diagnostic tool I really have is "ping."
Obviously the two machines should be able to ping each other through
the hub. I'll also try and set up some ftp, but I'd like to go at
this systematically.
Is there a list of tests that I could run on this hub to confirm, one
way or the other, if the hub is up to snuff?
Here are the details for the hub:
"WiseCOM 8-Port 10BASE-T HUB
Compliant with 10BASE-T, 10BASE2 and 10BASE5 specifications of the
IEEE 802.3 standard.
Automatically partitioning function to isolate network failure.
Equipped with a variety of informative LEDs for easy viewing and
troubleshooting.
MDI-X/MDI selection switch, allowing you to swap the last 10BASE-T
port transmit and receive ping assignments to link your hub to another
hub.
easy to instll on a desktop environment
Emission: FCC Part 15 Class A
Ethernet HUB for Workgroup"

is there any mp3 manager for linux?
by Deepak
Hi,
I have around 40GB full of mp3s. Right now I am using
xmms in FC4. My problem is searching a particular mp3.
$ ls -R | grep "name".mp3 doesn't work because some
are ripped with filenames like "AudioTrack 01.mp3"
etc. but these files have ID3 tags already there when
it was used with windows media player before.
Is there a utility or addons for xmms (like those in
media player, winamp etc.) or separate program, which
can manage all those mp3 based on Album,Year, Gnere
etc.?
Thanks!
