RE: Postgresql Failed
by Nirav Parikh
Hi Les,
Thanks for reply. I just got tired of it and I uninstalled the fedora and starting it from scratch now.

The first question to ask about any mysterious access permission problem is: Are you running SELinux?

RE: Cheap way to practice clustering?
by James Montz
If you just want to play and learn with Failover, you don't have to have
a multi-host aware storage solution.
I have a couple of test servers setup, just using their local disk for
storage. I have setup several services (httpd, sendmail, imap, and
virtual IP) to fail over between the two servers, and has suited my
needs. And if you really wanted to test an external storage source, you
could use an NFS mount.
The only difference in a production environment will be the presence of
the storage system, and this is basically just handled by defining the
shared file system as a shared resource.

Subject: Cheap way to practice clustering?
Hi all -
I posted about using firewire for clustering practice a couple of days
ago. It turns out that this apparently requires a special, very
expensive firewire solution.
So I want to play around with clustering (as in high availability
clustering a la Red Hat Cluster Suite, not computational clustering) at
home so that I can become more proficient. The problem is, I don't want
to buy a multi-thousand dollar SAN for my house. I wanted to find a way
to do clustering on the cheap. I am not sure what path to take, so I am
going to toss it to the list to see if anyone has any suggestions. I am
totally open to older/used equipment.
>From what I've been told, I need a storage device which is multi-host
aware, so plain old firewire or even SCSI JBOD won't do. I've been
looking at the specs at
http://www.redhat.com/software/rha/cluster/hardware/.
I'm leaning towards VMWare at this point, but I'd rather do it for real
than in virtual machines.
Any pointers?
Thanks!
Thomas

FC3: Java and 2.6.12-1.1372 FC3smp
by "Peter Müller"
Hi,
with kernel 2.6.12-1.1372_FC3smp no Java-Application (DBVisualiser, MKS,
JBoss) is able to create a network-connection to another server/database.
All other (native) applications are running without any problems. Any hint's
!?
with best regards

Postgresql Failed
by Nirav Parikh
Hi,
Postgresql service suddenly stop working it was running fine just about an hour ago.
I checked the file pgstartup.log and it says
"postmaster cannot access the server configuration file "/var/lib/pgsql/data/postgresql.conf" Permission denied.
I changed the root password this morning but it was working fine after that it stopped working. I changed the password to old password and restarted the machine. The problem is still there.
Does anybody know what's the problem ?
Regards,
NEO

Strange init 3 behavior,
by akonstam@trinity.edu
Has any one seen this behavior on FC4 systems, and know what to do about
it?
You go into a text terminal and wan to change to
init level 3, so you execute the command init 3. The machine hangs. (more about
this later)
So just to try something you enter init 1 instead of init 3. The machine
goes to init level 1. Aha you say. I know what to do and you type init 3
The machine not to be bested by a mere user changes to init
level 5.
A kind of work around>
If you go into a terminal and you type init 3 and it
hangs in various places depending on how long you wait and whether you hit
return. Now you hit ctrl-alt-f7 the screen goes black. You then hit
ctl-alt-f1 and eureka you are in init level 3. Is that obscure enough a
procedure for you. I tried this on three machines and it worked
every time.
What is happening here? Does any one know?

init 3 problem revisited.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
People's answers to me have set me on the right track and here is what
I have observed now. I just can't understand that no one else has
noticed this glitch.
I made the shifting to init 3 in a terminal more mysterious than it
really is. crl-alt-f1 takes you into a terminal. Login as root and
run init 3. The machine seems to be hung but typing ctl-alt-f2 takes
you into another terminal window where of course you are not logged
on. Then typing ctrl-alt-f1 again will take you back to the first
terminal where you are logged on and in into level 3.
So as people have suggested the going into init level 3 is occurring
but what is not occurring is the last step in a problem we used to
have on previous fedoras where going into init 3 would stop at the
anacron stop step. To get a prompt you would have to hit return.
Now the return is not accepted and the machine seems to be hung.
Maybe a bugzilla is needed.

Rebuilding FC3 base kernel from source
by Philip Prindeville
What do I need to do to install the FC3 kernel sources and
build exactly the same kernel that comes with this distribution?
Somehow my install got hosed, and when my system boots I
get a lot of messages that insmod can load /lib/dm*.ko (at least
that's what I think it was).
Sigh.
Thanks,
-Philip
